Sci-Fi Avatar: The Way Of Water

I could never jump on the Avatar bandwagon I think because I never saw the movie in 3D. I saw it in 2D in theaters. While the movie was good, it wasn’t this groundbreaking thing when it came to the story and its characters. Now I’m sure the 3D was fantastic (personally I can’t watch 3D, I would always get sick), but the majority of people will be watching this movie at home on their tv screens and that’s why it’s important for a film to have more going for it than just the special effects. It’s why I don’t see it as having this kind of “cultural impact” that some people are claiming…at least not right now. It’s only been 13 years, you would probably have it give it more time to see if it had any real impact in the general population.

Back from seeing the re-release, it's definitely an upgrade from the previous version in terms of CG and the look of it. The color grading is more similar to the new movie, the 3D is still incredibly effective and it's actually less intrusive than I remembered from last time. They've actually added some flies and bugs to some scenes and the CG on the animals and characters is an improvement on certain parts. The only downside is this is the theatrical cut but more importantly, they cut the braided sex scene. Maybe Disney got involved... I dunno.

Also, the footage they showed for the new movie is incredible, the way they show the swimming stuff is well done, and the part where they go back up above the water is especially great to look at.

James Cameron’s remastered Avatar added another 13 offshore markets on Friday, including the UK and Japan, and lifted its three-day international box office cume to $7.7M. On a like-for-like basis, that’s 54% ahead of the 2012 3D reissue of Star Wars: Episode I. Along with domestic’s opening Friday, the Disney rerelease has a global total of $11M so far, headed to about $25M for the weekend.

The braided sex scene thing was never in the theatrical cut.

I don’t think the remaster is THAT extensive either. The original version was loaded things like bugs and particulates in the air. This was a very subtle remaster.

Yeah you're right I just checked.

Well, I'm looking at it now on and it's not there in this scene. The flies are way more prevalent (and in 3D) in the rerelease.

why did the whole internet joke about the braided sex when they watched it in theaters? of course it was in the original theatrical release

So the part where they connect the white fibers is not in the remaster? yeah i am 100% sure this is Disney.

edit:
this site says that the sex scene is in the extended edition. i am 100% sure that this was in europe in the original cut.

Yeah that was never in the theatrical cut. The re-release is the theatrical cut.

Watched this in 3D at the cinema today, for the first time since 2009.

Visuals are still outstanding and by far the best utilisation of 3D in any film. And that comes from a guy who hates 3D.

I am now quite hyped for the Way of the Water.

Looks like this rerelease is going to be a big success and push the original film's total even further into orbit!

Should do a good job of building hype for Avatar 2.

Anybody know where I can buy the extended edition from? I never saw that version. Im also curious if I should just hold off because I feel like a 4k physical release will be coming shortly.

My feelings towards avatar has changed over the years. I saw it opening day in 2D and I was let down honestly. I ended up not rewatching the moving until about a year or two ago and I really enjoyed it. Maybe it's because I was 16 when the first one released, but I found it more compelling and interesting in my late 20s than I did as a teen. No, I don't think it's close to Cameron's best, but it's still a very entertaining film and I'm excited for way of water.

Amazon's got it. I'm not sure if the upcoming 4K release will include the extended cut but Cameron does like to include all the bells and whistles anyway.

We joke about Avatar having ZERO cultural impact but I'll be the first to tell you that when someone says Avatar most people will start talking about The Last Airbender.

It seems people still really, really love Avatar

Yeah the extended cut is far better and the deleted scenes (not in the extended cut) actually adds some more context. It gives an arch to some characters like Joel David Moore.
