Comics Back In Black Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

No offense to the artist, but when did Peter get a rugged Douglas look to him?
Peter is used to combing his hair back while leaving two small "spikes" up at front.

What you see in that pic is considered "Mask Hair".

Joe Q said its a flashback scene

He was was referring to the last page posted from that same annual:

SENSMANN001005_col.jpg

His exact words describing the pics:

"Ramon Bachs will be the guest penciler for issues #36 & 37, leading up to the Sensational Spider-Man Annual by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larocca. Here’s some gorgeous art from the annual, which is on-sale in May, along with some art from a flashback scene."

With the above obviously being the flashback, his saying "along with" suggests the Empire State Building scene is supposed to be set in the present.[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

So the annual features not only Pete in the black costume, but Gwen and Harry as well. If that one doesn't absolutely reek "tie-in," I don't know what does.

At least we've gotten no silly rumblings about a "long-dead villain returning from the grave," so I think it's safe to say we don't need to be worrying to much about Harry coming back present day...

It also doesn't make sense as it's clear Peter rejects the suit in the film and will be back in the classic red & blues by the closing reels anyway.

Ah yes, but this is February, and the movie comes out in May. That's a good four months for three seperate titles to tell stories about Pete in the black costume before people see the movie and go, "Okay, so when's he going back to that cool costume he was wearing at the end of the movie?"

Sigh. Marvel, you crazy cats...

so, i guess its pretty safe to say that May's dead. I say good ridance, every breath she breathes puts the incredible, classic ASM#400 to shame. Mark Bagley and J.M Demattis must be hitting themselves going " All that work for nothing??". Plus May's death will help Peter grow up a little bit and mature as a character.

And here I was starting to think that MJ would be the one who get's shot. And isn't interesting how everyone seems perfectly okay with Aunt May getting killed. So much for respect for the elderly :D

There is the possibility that those images from the Annual are a flashback to the Amazing Spider-Man 1987 annual and that the other page with Peter, Gwen, MJ, and Harry is a kind of "Untold Story," but considering the recent FNSM #17, it's a pretty good guess that Aunt May is the one who gets hit by the snipers bullet (I'm reluctant to say dead because it could be a situation where Aunt May is hospitialized and in a coma, just to drag out the drama). Plus, it actually makes sense on with regards to dramatic irony--Aunt May more than anyone was the one who convince her nephew to publicly reveal his identity as Spider-Man even though Peter knew it could potentially put her life in danger, and then sure enough, the very person who persuaded him is the one who winds up on death's door.

I will agree however that the notion that MJ would be perfectly okay with Peter wearing the black costume when it's been established that it scares her and reminds her too much of Venom would be a continuity gaff. Then again, it's possible that Peter dons it because his red-and-blues are ruined from the battle taking place in Civil War #7, that he has no other spares but the black one, and that perhaps he sends MJ further into hiding in a separate place from him in order to protect her, restoring to secret mettings and what not, so perhaps she doesn't have much to say about the decision of him wearing it.

It's been said already. MJ is heavily affected by Peter's return to the black costume.

May's the better choice. It'll give Peter a new reason for doing what he does, and with more effort and determination than he probably has for the last five years or so. The Ben thing still drives him, but its doesnt seem to be a great a force anymore. Plus, May should go out in a final way that does her justice.

Personally, I wish we could just avoid yet ANOTHER storyline that focuses on "shock" to generate cash, but if someone has to go, I'd rather it be Aunt May. Killing off ANOTHER love interest for Peter isn't going to teach him anything. He'll probably just go all dark and emo and begin referring to himself as "the spider" like he did in "Shrieking" and "Beware the Rage of a Desperate Man"...which I hated. Peter shouldn't be stuck in "Goth-Mode" 24/7...I can read any number of blogs and get that effect. ugh.

I'd like to see May get killed, tell Peter not to blame himself, which he will anyway, and have MJ remind Peter that not EVERYTHING is his fault, and perhaps we'll get the marriage back in the forefront of the book...as opposed to just being a sidenote.

What am I thinking....may as well wish for a supporting cast as well...well, one that isn't made up entirely of superheroes.

Speaking of Supporting cast, what the hell ever happened to Jill Stacy and Robbie's son ( i forgot his name, peter's roomate wen MJ disappeared)?? Did they jus disappear or did i miss an issue where they both died? I would love to see their reaction to Peter's unmasking....

The last time I recall seeing Jill Stacy was when Peter found MJ after her "death". She was there, consoling Peter, who refused to accept that she had died.

As for Robbie's son, his last appearance that I recall was in Jenkins's run on Peter Parker: Spider-Man.

I know neither of them have really been featured in a book since Spectacular was re-released and cancelled.

Personally, I'd like to see nobody get killed... though I can see one of them getting seriously "wounded".

Just throwing it out there...

But, what if Black Cat is looking out for MJ and May, swoops down to block the bullet, but gets it herself?

Pete puts on the black costume as he and Cat were dating the last time he was in the black.

Just a thought.

I already gave up Amazing, Just not into it anymore, but I'm still giving the other 2 books a chance. already read 17 of FNSM and it did make me feel like I was reading an old backissue (Because if the cops) which is a good thing. I love the black suit, but when he goes back to red, they should make it red and black again. I don't think flash will be a sell out. And people complain too much.

Don't really care about the reasons behind the costume change. I just love the Black costume appears again!

Yo Benjum, u kno now that i think of it i think your definitly on to something man. We never considered that Marvel would throw a curveball, i mean they know that we expect either Aunt May or Mj to die and Marvel tends to do what we least expect. Killing off one of them would be too predictable, Black Cat may just be the one to die, it would also explain why he's not too distressed in Friendly Neighborhood. I'd rather aunt May die, but i think Black Cat is the unlucky victim.

Black Cat is very unlikely. She is alive (she takes part in the upcoming arc of SSM) when Peter is back in black.

more i read the hype the less i believe anyone will die from the parker family

I don't think it was ever mentioned that anyone was ever going to die...

:yay:

Given the choice between a fugitive’s life and the fame and fortune she left behind to marry Peter Parker, will she take the deal? Meanwhile, across town, Peter Parker brokers the safety of his wife and Aunt May…even at the cost of his freedom. How much madness and loss can one marriage take? Join us in this retrospective of one of the most enduring love stories in comics. Written by Matt Fraction (IMMORTAL IRON FIST, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL) with jaw-dropping art – including beautiful Romita-esque flashback sequences – by superstar Salvador Larroca (UNCANNY X-MEN, NEW UNIVERSAL).
48 pgs/Rated A …3.99

Neither of them dies then - kinda good. But MJ appears to still be on run, which is a shame. Maybe JoeQ's way of dealing with the marriage is to have her and Peter unable to see one another for so long, that we all forget she ever existed ;)
