Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 2

Don Draper always made me think of Alex Ross' Bruce Wayne before there was ever talk of Hamm getting the role. Anyone who has watched Mad Men can confirm that Hamm was actually playing 2 roles in that series.

To be fair, the majority of people had a similar thinking after BvS came out.

Then Suicide Squad.

Then Justice League.

I don't even know if WB learning their lesson is even possible by this point.

Well, being fair, they actually did "learn lessons" after each movie.

Problem is, those lessons were largely the wrong ones, so they kept making the same core mistakes while swapping in new sets of supplementary mistakes.

Yep, and they figure more micro-managing will make things better. Oye.

This.

If you tell me Jon Hamm's not got the acting range of someone like Gyllenhaal, if anything, I'd probably agree with you. But Hamm can definitely portray Batman. And he can definitely portray him a lot better than probably a good 90% of the actors who could play Batman.

I agree. I'd be happy with him but always wondering what could have been with Jake.

Oh yeah, same. By no means would I be upset if they made the choice to cast Gyllenhaal. I'd just rather see Hamm in the role more, personally.

I just think Jake would have more fun in the role. I’m digging the idea of those big intense eyes peering out of the cowl.

As for Hamm, I can just watch the animated series.

Define "fun".

People often think Keaton was the best Batman and he practically hated it given he had to do it in a super uncomfortable suit, same goes for Bale (in Begins anyway). I don't see why neither Hamm nor Gyllenhaal wouldn't enjoy themselves in the role, but even then I don't really think that fun is necessarily the most important factor.

To be fair, in terms of eyes I've always been someone who preferred the idea of white lenses to the raccoon eyes. But even then, just take a look at a few of the manips of Jon Hamm as Batman. He can do intense, eye wise.

Also yeah, the fact that he's the human embodiment of the DCAU Batman is a pretty good reason for why I want him in the part given...well, DCAU Batman is pretty goddamn definitive for the best Batman there is.

For actors who are lesser known who could play Batman with an intensity that is needed:

Oscar Isaac
Jesse Hutch
Mike Vogel
Alex O'Loughlin
Brett Dalton

Hence, why if you check out my thread of ways to fix the DCEU then you go after lesser known actors or actors who are on the rise or who are like under the radar

Those actors for them it could be their breakout role like think Evans when he was first cast as Cap or Hemsworth when he was first cast as Thor

So, in closing I would go with any one of the choices that I laid out for Bruce Wayne/Batman

I think Jake would have more fun with playing it differently, adding some unique twist. There's no way he's going to play it straight or like the others from the past. Bale was like that. And now Jake would be another. Hamm would most likely play it straight like Affleck, but it will just be a better version. Jake digs deep into his characters, more than Hamm.

As for white lenses, i hate that idea. Taking away an actors most expressive tool for ANY role is a big no-no. then, if you do it for batman...especially Batman, it defeats the purpose of casting a good expressive actor in the first place.

Lenses in certain scenes would be great but I definitely wouldn’t want them through the whole movie.
Especially if it turns out to be Jake Gyllenhaal.
Covering up his eyes would be a crime:funny:

What do you mean especially? If anything it's quite the opposite. He's the very image of stoic and unreadable.

With that said, I would absolutely make exceptions for actors of Jake's caliber. I've always wanted lenses, but it definitely would be a crime to hide his.

I'd like to see the lenses used as sort of an intimidation tactic

like imagine being a criminal in a nighttime gotham alleyway with this dark figure who has glowing white eyes approaching you.

To be more specific, I'd like to see Batman have lenses that effectively functioned the same way that Black Panther's lenses functioned. In scenes where he's meant to look intimidating, have the white lenses to reduce the humanity. In scenes where that humanity is important, draw them back and show his eyes. Win-win.

As for Hamm playing it straight? I'll be honest, if you mean what I think you mean, the main reason for why I'd actually prefer that is that I'm kinda tired of seeing someone portray (Blank)'s Batman. Or even see them portray them differently. While I do think Jake's version of Batman would be awesome, I'm still kinda tired of it. Burton's Batman, Schumacher's Batman, Nolan's Batman, Snyder's Batman. I've seen four interpretations and changed versions of my favourite fictional character ever. Now, for once, just give me Batman. The Batman who I grew up with, who effectively shaped my morals and inspired me in ways that aren't even describable. Give me a definitive version of Batman on the big screen, literally just once and I'd be happy.

There no the Batman. Even the Batman you grew up with is a specific version of Batman.

Affleck played it straight and it was boring. And yes, wanting the definitive Batman, well there is none. The animated series is not definitive and he's not always like that in the comics. I'd rather see an actor who has chops, take a risk.

Yeah, it's no secret that characters featured in long-running comics are continually changing to reflect the times, not to mention the unique contributions of ever-rotating creative teams. Still, I think it's fair to say that some of the more recognizable traits of such characters (Batman being no exception) have and continue to remain consistent.

With regard to the DCAU interpretation of Batman in particular, there's something about that take on the character that appeals to all generations of fans; and that's why we sometimes think of it as being definitive.

Yeah. While of course there's no single "definitive" Batman take, a guy that's been around that long and had so many different interpretations...

At the same time, ask 50 Bat-fans what they think of the Conroy 90s animated series, and Mask Of The Phantasm, and like 45 of 'em are going to be salivating Homer Simpsons style and singing its praises as a take on the character.

Hardly a bad starting point.

Not a popular choice but **** it.
