I'm not saying he's had more career success, but the "actor's actor" thing is not wrong at all. No one was checking for Affleck as an actor. No one thought he'd ever win an acting Oscar. Hollywoodland was, critically, a "meh." Affleck's praise for Argo and The Town was mostly for his directing. If his performances were remotely remarkable, they WOULD have been shoe-ins for acting nods considering what Oscar-bait those movies otherwise were. But they weren't. Because Affleck The Actor has never been considered great. Pattinson's at a much earlier stage, but he's well on his way there based on the choices he's making and the performances he's giving.
