Batman: Year One

Not impressed with Ben's voice at all. Should have hired Rino Ramano for young Bruce. Big mistake, imo.

I'm impressed, the voice really works in the context of this young Batman. This is my favourite quote from the whole movie, so yeah this was really important and i'm glad i liked it. :oldrazz:

I don't think any of the voicework is impressive.

Hiring Rino Ramano for Frank Miller's young Batman would have been a big mistake. Having the same voice as Rino Ramano's young The Batman would have definitely made people think that it's the same young Batman. Frank Miller's Batman is different, the voice should be different. It's a way of confirming that this features a different version of Batman. And Kevin Conroy already voiced his own Batman's version of Year One in Alan Burnett's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Frank Miller's Batman: Year One is very different than that, different origin, different Batman, different voice.

The original comic had a very dramatic, dirty look, but this just looks too dead, too clean, and too digital. Instead of focusing on the lighting and the dramatics and theatricality of the scene, they're just kind of going by the numbers with it.

The wealthy dinner table scene didn't have a dirty look in the comic. It was a ritzy place. The scene in the film is very atmospheric, with the fire dancing around, the reflection of the flame, the shades of lighting, the shadows, the swirling smoke, the silhouette of Batman endowing him with that air of mystery, etc.

It's certainly focusing on the lighting, the dramatics, theatricality. And they were definitely focusing on giving Batman: Year One a very dramatic, dirty look. Co-Director Lauren Montgomery explained, "We actually tried to make Gotham as dirty and ugly as we possibly could. That’s a harder thing to do than you realize, just getting the overseas artists to really put that extra detail in the backgrounds with just like cracks and trash. We kept getting these perfectly clean cities back and have to make notes, 'It needs to be dirty. Put graffiti, put crap in there.' So yeah, it’s hard to make – you don’t realize how difficult it is to get a realistic looking alley way because when they’re painting it digitally, a lot of things tend to look pretty clean and pretty pristine. So just to go in and add that extra detail like things being crooked is that much more work. But we tried to get as much as that in there as we could so that the city really felt real."

Toonzone News: "So is this the dirtiest, grungiest animated movie you’ve ever worked on?"

Lauren Montgomery: "I think so because a lot of our other ones – we’ve never really had a Gotham that has looked as dirty as this. It really needed to feel just miserable because so much of the comic is about Gordon being surrounded by corruption and just being miserable in Gotham, and Bruce realizing what Gotham is and wanting to make it better. So the city had to be a character in the movie itself. So we wanted to just make it feel like the dirty, sad Gotham that it needed to be."

On October 3rd, Harry Knowles, founder of aintitcool.com, tweeted, "Starting BATMAN: YEAR ONE - see you on the otherside!
BATMAN: YEAR ONE best superhero film ever... holy **** awesome sauce! Man, I kind of just want to watch it again. dude - Commissioner Gordon... ****ING AWESOME! The fights... BRUTAL FLUID BEAUTIFUL. The tone of this is just so dead on. As you watch the pitch perfect animation, you dream of the David Fincher (director of Seven) Live-Action version.
Now watching @Paul_Dini 's CATWALK (1995) from BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES as one of Timm's Picks extra on BATMAN: YEAR ONE."

Also on October 3rd, Harry Knowles tweeted, "Watching @Paul_Dini 's CATWOMAN showcase on BATMAN: YEAR ONE Blu!"
Paul Dini replied, "Oh, man! Lucky! I haven't even seen it yet!"
Harry Knowles replied, "That's ridiculous! Someone needs hangin!"

Harry Knowles tweeted, "Animation on this is beautiful. I would love it so much if Anne Hathaway would perform what Catwoman just performed in @Paul_Dini 's DC SHOWCASE of CATWOMAN."

Frank Miller was asked at the San Diego Comic-Con if he had seen the Batman: Year One film and if he had any thoughts on it, but Frank Miller had not yet seen it. "I have not seen it," was Frank Miller's reply.

I'm sure Frank Miller will love it. According to Bruce Timm's DVD commentary for the "Legends of the Dark Knight" episode, which adapted a segment of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, when Bruce Timm asked for permission Frank Miller said something along the lines of "Go ahead, I'm in good hands." On the commentary of "Legends of the Dark Knight" and in the Modern Marvels book Bruce Timm said Frank Miller's response was that he called back three times, leaving three messages, each were raving about that episode, and each were longer than the previous. Saying things like "That was great!", "Watched it again, you did a good job!" and "Lynn (Varley) saw it; she went 'Hey, that's Carrie Kelley!'"
Tasha Robinson: "Were you happy with the episode of Batman: The Animated Series that used your Dark Knight character designs?"
Frank Miller: "Oh, that was wonderful! [Laughs.] It was hilarious, yeah. Bruce Timm called me up, the animator, and asked if it was okay if he did a little bit of Dark Knight in the show. And I said, 'Absolutely, you're Bruce Timm!' He said, 'Do you want to see a script?' I said, 'No, you're Bruce Timm! I just want a videotape.' The videotape came, and I watched it about three times in a row, laughing out loud. It's spot-on. He even got my Robin right."

In November, 2010, Frank Miller was interviewed by Christopher Irving and Frank Miller told him, "'I'm talking to animators, and I would rather do it animated,' Frank reveals when I bring a hypothetical Dark Knight Returns movie up."

This version of Year One should have been made into a live action Batman film instead of Begins. Y1 >> BB.

Impressively faithful to the book. Great to even see the cat, Selina Kyle and Holly there exactly as in the book. Very impressive. And Bryan Cranston as Gordon is perfection. Awesome.

Batman kicking that support down with sheer strength was probably one of my favorite parts of the book. Seeing it animated is even more awesome.

Less than two weeks, and this movie will be mine.

Oh, yes, it will be mine.

I'm so glad this film is finally being made. Begins has always been missing something(outside of bat smarts) and Y1 will present the argument.

Exibit A:
Batman's escape from the Swat Team Raid!
I cringe every time I see it in begins.

great wayne's world reference :D

it shall be mine too

I didn't even know it was a quote from that movie. :woot:

Also, I looked up the clip you were referencing. Holy crap, I directly paraphrased that quote without even knowing it!!! :wow:

You just got to keep beating on that dead horse, don't you?

Until it's beaten to dust!

I'm also just stating the obvious. But since it's so true, and more evidence is seen with ever clip that's released, it's worth restating.

Batman: Year One is a great book, but I am not surprised that it never got made into a live action movie. It's not really summer blockbuster material.

Look what I saw at Best Buy (Canada) today:

Told them that it releases next week, they took them off the shelf and thanked me. Now I'm thinking I should have bought a copy THEN told them... :\
