BBC's Sherlock: Series 3

In an interview given to the Metro newspaper, Mark Gatiss projects series four of Sherlock, time permitting for Benedict and Martin, will likely come around in 2016. So much for that news about the BBC wanting it out by Christmas 2014

There was suddenly a kind of outraged response that it might not be back until 2016 but that’s precisely how long it always is. It’s always two years! But we’d like to return soon, of course.’

Fu....

At least an honest estimate is supplied. The extra time will not be detrimental: the series finale created a lot of structural problems that need to be resolved.

As much as I'm bummed that we won't be seeing it sooner, I don't mind the wait all that much. It's kind of fun to have Sherlock be an event, something that doesn't happen all that often. It adds to the experience of the thing. In the same way, I feel sorry for all the kids that didn't grow up with the Harry Potter books as I did. Waiting between each book, discussing and speculating what might happen, ect. that just added to everything for me. It made it more fun.

Granted, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if they did decide to speed up their production schedule, but I'm not crying about it either.

3 episodes and it takes them 2 years to produce. I know they go for quality but that's a ridiculous amount of time. The gap between two and three I can understand with movie commitments and maybe that's the same issue here but I haven't seen anything coming up from anyone involved to explain 2 years.

Both Cumberbatch and Freeman's careers are really starting to take off, so I'm betting they already have a good number of films lined up, even if they haven't been announced yet.

Also, it doesn't actually take 2 years to produce the episodes. Series 3 too nine months, including a production break to accomodate Hobbit reshoots.

Truth is, Moffat and Gatiss are also busy with Doctor Who, especially in 2013 and this year, given the 50 Year anniversary and production shift.

Two year gaps is good, I think. It makes Sherlock an event, allows Freeman and Cumberbatch to pursue other roles, but still regular enough that people remember it.

And considering that each episode is much like a mini-movie, it's perfectly understandable that shooting would take some time.

Well Cumberbatch in 2014 alone has seven projects + whatever comes up. To contrast, he's more busy this year than last year.

In 2013 he made like 5 movies + filming Sherlock

The fifth estate
The Hobbit
Assage County
Star Trek
12 years a slave

So filming for "Sherlock" probably wouldn't start till 2015 for the anticipated 2016 airing

Well we say that, but Sherlock doesn't require as much post production as Doctor Who, and they get over twice as much Doctor Who out per series compared to Sherlock.

I think it has more to do with Cumberbatch and Freeman's availability. The guys are hot items now, so they're bound to keep getting movie gigs. And something worth noting, you pointed out that Dr. Who requires more post production, but both the creators of Sherlock are involved with that too aren't they? So that probably factors in.

True, I didn't realize he had that many going on, however his part in The Hobbit is almost certainly done already and The Imitation Game as well as Magik are both in post-production meaning they are done with him for those roles. He's only a voice in The Penguins of Madagascar, he's only got two movies in pre-production and one announced.

So that's really only two movies, a voiceover and a planned project for 2016. A bit less than last year. ;)

I don't know what Freeman's schedule is looking like however.

well this is sad . They were supposed to start filming relatively soon according to freeman but now those plans have been scrapped. I imagine this will happen a lot over the next year as they try to squeeze in Sherlock into their schedules.

Filming for the fourth season of the popular British show Sherlock has been postponed.

Martin Freeman, who plays John Watson in the global hit series, has revealed that plans to start filming soon have been scrapped.

"It's very hard to get together," he told Digital Spy. "But it's one of those things where you have to at some point just go, 'We're going to do it now' - otherwise we could be having this conversation in three years."

He added: "There comes a point where you've got to p*** or get off the pot."

A BBC spokesman recently told Mirror Online that filming depends mainly on cast availability: "Conversations are still ongoing regarding Sherlock's return. Steven Moffat has already said that he has mapped out a fourth series, but it is always depending on cast availability.

"The last series was a fantastic hit for us and we're massively proud of the show," the spokesperson added, stating that every member of the team of is keen to start filming as soon as schedules work out.

During an online Q&A with fans after the series 3 finale earlier this year, Moffat and Mark Gatiss admitted it all comes down to the schedules of Benedict Cumberbatch and Freeman.

"Everyone is very keen to do more, but we have accidentally cast the two most successful actors in the world and schedules are tight," said the pair.

Moffat and Gatiss need to think about filming the next two series at one time. Didn't Peter Jackson make the LOTR trilogy and Hobbit trilogy in mainly one take? And the films The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers done by Richard Lester were made together.

I started watching Sherlock about two months before the third one came out so it wasn't a big deal but I just don't care anymore if it's going to be two years before we see anymore. I like it but I'm just 'whatever' on it if it'll take that long. Doctor Who had nearly a year long break before the 50th came around and that was acceptable for a few reasons as that also had to include not only the regular series but also the 50th special and the xmas special where they swapped for Capaldi. Sherlocks excuse is that the actors are busy elsewhere doing other things. I honestly don't see the point in waiting two years for another three episodes.

I know that a big deal was made when both Sherlock and Elementary we set in our modern era.

I am wondering if such comments were made when Basil Rathbone did all of his Sherlock Holmes films set in his era of around WW2?

I don't know. WWII was still a fairly recent era to when the Holmes stories originally took place it might not be as big a leap as if it is over a century later.

The wait is agonising, but I thought I'd kill some time by making some Sherlock sculptures.

Possible series four as soon as next year.

The main reason for the long periods between seasons of the BBC's "Sherlock" have been due not to the work involved but rather finding the time for it in the schedules of its very busy actors and producers. Now, producer Mark Gatiss tells The Radio Times that a window might be opening soon and hopefully indicate we could see the fourth season as early as next year:

"I can officially tell you that we are moving closer to agreeing some dates to shoot. If that sounds like a party line, it is. That is proper progress because Ben [Benedict Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] are so busy and Stephen and myself are so busy, but actually trying to get everybody to interlock is — we have made significant progress."

My mom watched series 3 on Netflix and was so pissed off at how episode 3 ended :funny:
