Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade.
The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain – they live at the same address of 221b Baker Street, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them.

Steven Moffat says: "Conan Doyle's stories were never about frock coats and gas light; they're about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, to hell with the crinoline. Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that's what matters."

Sherlock Holmes

Brilliant, aloof and almost entirely lacking in social graces. Sherlock is a unique young man with a mind like a 'racing engine'. Without problems to solve, it will tear itself to pieces. And the more bizarre and baffling the problems the better. He has set himself up as the world's only consulting detective, whom the police grudgingly accept as their superior.

Dr. John Watson

Brace, resourceful, practical. An army doctor somewhat shattered by service in Afghanistan, John Watson finds himself in London, a bit of a lost soul. Soon he is sharing a flat with a complete stranger and his life changes completely. Now he sees the world through Sherlock's eyes and the most unlikely but immortal friendship is about to begin.

Episode 1.
A study in Pink: The police investigate the deaths of a series of people who all appear to have committed suicide by taking a poisonous pill.

Episode 2.
The Blind Banker: Sherlock and Watson must decipher deadly symbols that are appearing on walls around London that kill anyone who sees them within hours.

Episode 3.
The Great Game: While investigating the violent death of a young civil servant, Holmes is targeted by a bomber.

I watched the first episode last night and was very impressed

^
Same here, I was pleasantly suprised. I am currently watching Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and this young Sherlock has a Brett feel to him ( how he moves, how he talk, his gestures ).

Some stuff made me smile :
- this is a three patch problem ( smoking patch ), this is a "classic" Holmes line "this is a three pipe problem )
- I invented the job

When does this premiere in the US? I think I read somewhere a couple weeks back that it'll be in September but I'm not too sure. I watched the trailer just now and I'm excited for this.

Also, ratings for the first episode were at a high of 7.9 million - the largest BBC has seen in quite some time.

I noticed quite a few similarities to that of Doctor Who also. The way Sherlock was characterised was very David Tennant/Matt Smith-ish.

Hot Damn! Just watched the first episode and I absolutely LOVED it. Everything about it was fantastic. I cannot wait to see more of this show.

I have to rate this show as one of the top greatest shows I've seen in the past five years.

So is this basically a miniseries? Can they make more?

I imagine if it continues to do well, they will pick it up as a continuing series.

Perhaps even similar to Doctor Who, and have a run of 12 or 13 episodes per season.

Watched this a few days ago and really enjoyed it, although the first half an hour was a bit slower than I'd of liked.

Written by Moffat.... so the Dr Who similarities are expected IMHO...

First episode was cool... though i actually guessed the killer in the first scene.... which was irritating...

Defo gonna keep watching this, but as it clashes with Top Gear... i'll have to use Iplayer to do so

Yeah it was more a compliment than anything, as I'm a big fan of Doctor Who.

Color me interested. When does this get released in the U.S.?

"Oh, this is Christmas!"
-The Eleventh Doctor

"Four serial suicides and now a note! Oh, it's Christmas!"
-Sherlock Holmes

I loved it. Cumberbatch did a great job as Holmes, and it's always nice to see Freeman again.

I like a good mystery, even though I'm terrible at solving them. Looking back, I really should've seen who the killer was right away. It was a common theme between the victims that's kinda obvious in hindsight.

One thing that did shock me was seeing Mark Gatiss himself pop up in the episode. You don't expect to see the creators of shows in supporting roles.

Mark Gatiss actually has small parts in a lot of the things he's written / produced.

So I checked the website and it can only play in the UK. Are there any other websites where I can play it?

I really loved this. I've seen it three times already. It somehow managed to be satisfactorily "Holmes" and satisfactorily "Moffat"... Excellent, EXCELLENT first installment...

Liked it, but felt that Cumberbach was a bit too weasely for the role. Jack Davenport would have been my choice.

Loved Mark Gatiss as Mycroft. The whole thing made me glance at "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" paperbacks again, which earns it extra points.

Look forward to seeing Holmes and Watson leave The Smokes for the provinces. Let's have a Speckled Band mystery!

Try this, Jones...

Dunno if it'll work but it's worth a try, no?

I watched it on youtube. They had it split up into nine parts. But thanks for the link anyway.

Yeah, this was awesome. I didn't expect it to be this good. Loved the cast and the mystery. I can't believe I didn't see the killer coming. I wish the U.S. started showing this here sooner.

I love the portrayal of Sherlock Holmes as a person with Asperger's syndrome. It really suits him in the way it was presented to us.

The guy that plays Dr. Watson kind of reminded me of John Simms, which not a bad thing since I think highly of Simms.

I can't wait for the second episode but until then I'll be watching the first again and again. :)

I watched this the other day, finally, and I have to say one thing. Why modern day?

As far as I could tell in the first episode the only things modern day were the mobiles and tracking stuff. I understand it's supposed to be a new take on something old but I like my Holmes in the past. I suppose it might be hard to get people to watch if it was more a period drama aswell, but anyhoo...

The episode it's self was fine, highly enjoyable and brilliantly acted by all involved. Bit annoyed I guessed the killer before Sherlock, bit like guessing how it was done in Jonathan Creek before Jonathan or guessing how the Daleks have come back this time in an RTD episode, you feel cheated a bit. I'll keep watching but I'll Sky+ it cause it clashes with Taggart.

Took note from Doctor Jones and found the episode on youtube and loved every minute of it from start to finish. I thought Cumberbach played a brilliant young Sherlock (I won't keep complimenting like Watson :hehe:) and I liked that this ep was still close to the original story of A Study In Scarlet. I truly hope this show can stay afloat and we get more episodes than what is originally planned.

Anyone visit Sherlock's site btw? The hidden messages are a real head scratcher and I caved on the first one because I had absolutely no idea what it could've meant (and the answer proved that). But any guesses at the second?
