Batman Begins BEGINS Costume Sculpt...My work in progress

hey david, i was noticing something. is the pec and ab area on the Begins suit more pertruding than the other costumes? it almost looks like it would barrel chested. maybe it's just the pic.

oh, and by the way, amazing as usual.

One quick comment here, the shoulder pads look too thick. Again, this could just be a difference between the references we have and those you have, but both the shape and thickness of the shoulders seem to be the only things "off".

As scary as Bale is going to be as Batman, if you saw that guy gliding down and kung-fuing your butt ... I think that'd be about 100 times scarier.

Thanks guys!!!
Feed back from you passionate batfanatics like myself is what I need to this baby as accurate as possible!!!

OK the shoulders...Damn shoulders...LOL

First off they are thicker than you'd think. Yes mine are still a little too thick...but not much more than they need to be.
Also...keep in mind that when it's cast up as a wearable piece the shoulders are not one solid piece of rubber...they're pretty much as thin as the whole suit.
The pics posted in this thread of the real suit...particularly the pic that is photoshopped beside my sculpt...that pic is STILL computer enhanced. The shoulder detail is washed out. The shoulder muscle...or 'detail that is outlined in the oval' is raised up just under a 1/4 inch. I'm talking about the oval area of the shoulder..the one seen so well in the leaked pic of Bale in the suit down on one knee. Try to look at that pic..look at the shoulder and you'll see that to get it perfectly oval like that you need to build it up.
Keep in mind tha the shoulders, bicepts and tricepts are 99% taken from the Sonar suit..almost IDENTICAL...and I've seen the sonar suit in person, and had a destroyed one here in my studio to inspect. The Begins suit has almost the exact same shoulders.
Why is anyones guess...but they are bulkier than that pic being posted as a comparison pic in this thread. Also that same pic has at least 50% of the abb's detail washed out.

Also...the suit is meant to make the wearer look buff...bulked up. Regardless of how bulky Bale is if the suit does not also show these details as being sculpted on then he runs the risk of looking like he's wearing a cheap-o halloween costume.
All the muscles need to be sculpted in to show the bulk. You cant just put a bulky guy like Bale in a rubber suit and not sculpt up the details as such...he'd look like he was wearing a full body condomn...like in Naked Gun...:)

However, you guys are right. The shoulders are still too big.
What I'm trying to do is get the sillouette of the body to match the movie suit. In other words if you put a light behind the sculpt of my chest piece and compare the overall shape to that of the movie suit...I need it to line up...again, working on it.

Please keep up the critiques. I'm happy so many of you are pumped about this but still...feel free to cut it apart if you feel it's off.
New pics coming in a few minutes....

sooooo...this mold your making here is for me, right?

Damn!!!...How did you guess??:)

Some more pics..

Please keep in mind that the left side of the sculpt (right side of body) still needs to be clayed up properly, proportions added and then the details can go in.

This begins to give an idea of the detail in the Abb's section. Details that so far have not been visible by any of the leaked or released pics...AND there's more. I just havent added it yet.. ;)

Here's an overall shot of the sculpt. What I'm trying to do is get the sillouette (sp????) of my sculpt to match that of bales movie suit...imagine that a light was behind both suits...and you could only see the outer rim of the costume. That's what I'm trying to capture.
Also look at the body this is sculpted onto. That's a lifecast of my younger brother. He's REAL slim and fit...just like me....yea, right!
It's not a big life cast. The clay on the bicepts is really thin, but yet looks huge. Same for the shoulders, but yes, those need to be slimmed a tad...

IM003171.jpg

This last pic I really love. It's blurry just like most of the released pics are. You have to force yourself to see the details and really focus in on them. Hard to really see what really is there....imagination starts to kick in and we start to make our own conclusions as to what really it is we're seeing.
Good marketing sometimes plays on this...look at the first EW pic we saw...

That's it for now...keep the critiques coming.

Hey David...you quit a bit of a problem. I'm looking at the picture of the full suit and I noticed that the middle line going down the abs is crooked....
uneven.jpg

LOL...I know. But you need to look at it from another perspective.
Twist that cross slightly clockwise and it'll make more sense.

Actually it's the pecks and shoulders that need to be lined up. The life cast isnt standing upright so the abb's are perfectly square...it's the right side...that's what needs to be squared off...trust me :)

David

David

*shrugs* you have the suit in front of you, so i guess you're the best judge about that...but from the latest pictures you've posted the abs look crooked to ME. but hey...you're the pro here, so if you say it's all good then it must be. :)

**Edit**
I just went to check it and you're right...it is off a bit. No biggie though. Easy to tweak. Damn, quite the eye you have there!
*****

Line up the cross so that it fit's into the abb's mid section. You'll then see that it cuts into the lower part of the peck...and that is tha part I need to trim off...not only but that upsidow triangular shape directly under the peck will level off to the opposite side once the line is in the middle of the sculpt. :)

David

There's still something off about the symbol. The top part of it covers too much of the pectoral... the wing is just a bit too big or raised too high or something. You can see it clearly in the picture where the suit is mirrored with your sculpt.

But the lower edge of the wing is much better now.

Hey...It's OK. :)
I openly asked for feedback on this.
lujho and I mutually respect one another so there is nothing to worry about. :)

Bottom line...lujho is right. The bat is still off but I wont finish that until I finish the peck sculpt on the opposite side THEN fully sculpt the bat in. Yes I've begun to clean it up...but it's not complete yet. I've begun to sculpt up the rest of the suit and once the whole thing is properly proportionate...then the bat will be finished properly.
Still, good call...that isn't that easy to spot!!

David

I've got to say, when I first saw your sculpt (the first time you revealed it) it looked spot on. It's only when you look hard and compare it to other photos that you see differences. You *do* have to look hard.

I'm glad our "fresh eyes" are able to help you in any way. I've little doubt the final result will be stunning, and would fool 99.9% of people who see it into thinking it's the real thing (you going to wear it to the movie's premiere or something?).

Every picture you've posted of your modifications gets closer and closer to nailing it. And I really can't wait to see what you'll do with the cowl - a much harder thing to get looking right, I'd imagine.

I've lurked on the Brotherhood of the Bat board for a long time, and some of those guys, including David, make suits that are as good or technically *better* than the ones in the films. I also get the feeling (forgive me if I'm being presumptuous) that this won't be the last attempt David makes of the Begins suit, and that we'll see a bunch of really accurate suits from the BOTB people in the next few years when the film/DVD comes out.

Thanks man.
Quite nice of you to say. :)

Cowl soon....probably as of the first of Novemeber...once I have a life again that is....

I've actually always had more trouble with chest pieces than with cowls. I dont know why, but I think that the cowl will be easier this time too.
Will this be the first and last Begins suit I make???...Probably not. You guessed right. I will do my best to get it as accurate as possible NOW....but when the DVD comes out and I've got the possibility to freeze clips, see the behind the scenes and so on...I'll probably end up making a whole new one.
Until then...I will do my best with what I can...and with the help of you fine folks here. :)
Opening night like the Begins Batman???....Absolutely!

do you get paid to do this?

Thanks!!!

Do I get paid to do this?...no..I do this in whatever spare time I have during the day...which is usually at about 2:AM...I am a full time costume maker but this bat stuff is only for myself. I dont sell any Batman items but really enjoy making them seeing as I'm as big a Batfan as the rest of you.
Probably after Halloween I'll post pics of a showroom-sort-of-speaking that I've set up to showcase ALL of the costumes I've made...and there's quite a few batsuits as well as other characters you may recognize...:)

David

David are you planning on finishing the suit before the movie is released, or waiting till after or nearer to it release to go over any final details?
If you're planning on finishing it before the release, any idea what the final colour you will be applying to it will be?

That pic is badass.

Just curious, David, have you ever done a '50's-60's style Dick Sprang inspired Bat-suit? I'd like to see your take on that, as that is the version I was introduced to the character with.

I've done my version based on Bob Kane's original Batman artwork that seemed to be pretty popular with batfans, and non batfans actually.. :)
Can you post a pic of the suit you're referring to?
Once the Begins suit is done I go back to finishing my full DKR suit...then I'll be looking for new blood...maybe the new Batman cartoon costume and cowl...dont know yet.
Love to see what you're referring to...

David

you should enter the Wizard halloween costume contest next year!
