Stunning.

I think we should all form some sort of....league of Justice..

Variety's review :

Based on a 2012 novel by Dennis Lehane, the film is sharply written and crafted, lavishly photographed, impeccably acted, with lots of twists and turns — yet for all that, it somehow lacks zing. I say “somehow” because the flaw, or limitation, or whatever it is about “Live by Night” isn’t obvious. It’s like seeing the ghost of a terrific movie: All the pieces are in place, yet as you’re watching it (or thinking back on it afterwards), there doesn’t seem to be quite enough there there.

I might be mistaken, but I was under impression that a critic should clearly and eloquently explain which elements of the film worked and which didn't and expand on why they did or didn't. "It lacks zing" doesn't really seem like well-explained assessment of a professional film critic.

I'll be damned if I understand anything... there doesn't seem to be quite enough of what? Exposition? Story? Character development? Giant hedgehogs?

If I had to bet I'd say it was probably a lack of giant hedgehogs with superspeed.

Criticism is dead. It's become a mafia of fanboys defending studios, brands, actors, and directors they like while trying to sink their competition. This little thing called the internet has somehow given them the idea that they can sway public opinion (and to an extent they can) and they've been abusing it ever since.

Someone definitely needs to make "I find your lack of zing disturbing" meme.

This is my new thesis.
Just saw Live by Night is a WB picture, now that explains the reviews.

Ever since Rogue One is out, every film is getting horrible, horrible reviews. I mean really bad. Passengers, Collateral Beauty, Live by Night, Assasins creed, you name it. Probably a coincidence, and maybe all these movies are bad, but makes you think.

Ive noticed recently how most movies nowawadays are being judged very binarily. Either they are the best thing ever, or the worst thing ever. Either a 9/10 or a 3/10. Makes no sense to me.

Thought the Accountant would suck too because of bad reviews. That didnt happen. And critics cant seem to properly agree on or articulate what was so bad about Live by Night. Maybe it lacked zing. But I'll judge it when I see it.

I'm totally on board the binary bull crap review system, but may I ask if you think critics are being influenced by Disney personally or are just already too far up Disney ' s butt to give anyone else a chance.?

Nah, there is no conspiracies against other studios. The quicker we put that to rest the better. If Live by Night isn't doing great with the reviews so far, it means it failed to connect with those critics to some extent. I really don't think any critic went in wanting to hate on the movie beforehand.

Here's the thing.

Ben Affleck isn't the first director to have a bad movie on his resume and he certainly won't be the last. His previous three films have been terrific, imo.

However, that won't stop fanboys on Twitter from focusing on Live By Night as if it's the only film Affleck's done and completely rage over it.

Agreed with both of you there.

Wouldn't shock me if the Batman stuff took some focus away from his work on Live By Night.
