Ben Affleck To Team With DC’s Geoff Johns On Standalone ‘Batman’ Film - Part 3

Matt Reeves, from what I have seen, is a solid choice.

No complaints here on that news.

One of the most important things about Reeves is that he has the talent to make an entirely CGI character completely believable. That takes a huge amount of talent and ability, both technically and in characterisation terms. The Batman needs someone who can work with CG well, both for Batman stunts and some of the rogues gallery. I can now see a movie that features some of the more outlandish Batman villains done well.

Just in case Ben leaves next year, Here's my free statement for WB to use next year -

"WB is proud to present The Batman from critically acclaimed WAR of Apes director Matt Reeves, who has come up with a fresh and exciting vision for the character. Years BEFORE the emergence of Superman, Batman battled the Clown of Prince, with Robin's life at stake, Jake Gyllenhaal will play the Caped Crusader the younger version of Bruce Wayne in his prime, with Ben Affleck producing to help this amazing story come to life in summer of 2019" and push for the narrative of how great Matt and Jake are, and how Matt push Ben aside or Ben might come back later (obviously not but when Jake is great everyone'd be Like F you BA). Please Jake make this happen =P

Actually reminded me of Weta, I hope Matt goes full Weta for Batman film, and not use other CGI companies.

Well it's looking good, sounds like he just needs to sign on the dotted line. He's already in with the studio too so that's a bonus. Fantastic news, I think early panic will dissipate as time moves on.

If Deathstroke isn't one of the main villains, then I would prefer they didn't use him and had held out on casting him (and cast someone better). The introduction of Eobard Thawne, Sinestro, Black Adam, Ares, Black Manta, Cheetah etc into a universe wouldn't be as a supporting villain going up against a hero who isn't their main enemy, so that shouldn't be the case with Deathstroke. Deathstroke has played a big part in higher quality stories than a lot of those villains too.

I'd say WETA's greater involvement is a virtual certainty, given Reeves has used them before, and is friends with Andy Serkis (who will probably end up in the movie in some respect). This is a very good a thing. If WETA know how to do anything is create massive scale CG sets. Think about what they were doing 15 years ago with Lord Of The Rings. I'd be very happy if they took the full reins for The Batman.

Gotham done exclusively by WETA. :hmr: The city had zero personality in BvS. Hopefully Reeves can address and fix that.

Reeves as director is good news IMO. He has a good record.

Great news. Another good addition to the directors of DCEU. :drl:

While it's nice that many fans here are welcoming Matt Reeves, it's kind of sad that they did not give as favorable response when Affleck was set to direct the movie. Or, at least I didn't see it.

Reeves is a better fit than Affleck was. Compare filmographies.

Affleck has nice filmography, besides every big name director can occasionally make a bad movie, Martin Campbell directed Green Lantern turned out to be bad even though he directed one of my favorite Bond movie (Casino Royale), similarly, Ayer directed Fury which was a very good movie but then he was responsible for Suicide Squad.

Lastly, Russo Brothers directed You, Me and Dupree (which has 21% RT rating) but they are now considered great directors, so filmography does not tell you everything.

I feel people have been unfair to Ben Affleck, it all started with many people reacting negatively when he got the role, then he was unfaily nominated for a Razzie for his portrayal as Batman, then they were critical when he wanted to take some time to write the script.

The environment that you work in does have some effect. Campbell directed GL at WB so it was a rotten :o the Russos directed their CBM's at Marvel Studios and they made two of that studio's best movies. The director of Doctor Strange previous movie was Insidious 2 which I believe has an abysmal RT score of 11%. His next movie, Marvel's Doctor Strange, has a 90% :sly:

I don't think so. Once Avatar 2 goes into production, that will be WETA's main priority. While they were working on the first one, they did a couple of shots for different films -- but they were Cameron's main VFX vendor. Matt Reeves lucked out on securing WETA wholesale for his Apes movies, but it won't be the case here.

And two, unless Reeves goes for the rogue gallery idea as previously rumored, there won't be as many extensive VFX required either.

Avatar 2 has been in development for donkeys I wouldn't be shocked if it never happened.

I guess this is the logic everyone follows now. Working at WB/DC lowers the quality of your movies. :o

^Sure. Lego Batman is a prime example of that.

I meant in regards of genre, not RT percentages.
