Best and Worst CGI Ever seen in a movie????

For me Transformers are not that great.
It was impressive technically, the problem is they were impossible to care about. With Gollum or Davy Jones, they were so successful because they were well-realized characters, not just cool special effects. The transformers were mostly bland and lifeless.

im generally fairly anti-CGI, but that davey jones is indeed impressive. i think avatars CGI is grossly over rated. its all so blatantly CGI which makes in an instant failure to me.

I'm not a die hard Avatar fan, but come on. Of COURSE its "blatantly" CGI....because none of its real. There are no 12 foot tall blue zebra people running around, flying on dragons between floating mountains.

Its like watching Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles and saying "those are so blatantly rubber suits".

And bare in mind, outside of the immediate sets within the "human world", EVERYTHING else was CGI. Even the freaking rocks and vines of the floating mountain scenes. Outside of the fact that you KNOW its cgi because nothing like it exists, how is this a failure?

But to get back on track, I'll have to say that I've always had an issue with Gollum. I'm a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE lotr fan; hell, if I'm not popping a South Park DVD in to fall asleep to, its one of the LOTR movies/extras.

Yeah, when we first see Gollum in the bright sunlight (when Frodo has him tied in elven rope); the breath was knocked out of me because it looked so good. But as I started to really watch the character, paying attention to him, i noticed how much more they could have done to really sell the character. For being so skinny you should really be able to see his muscles/tendons/etc move, but you don't. His muscles, ribs, etc, are all just a texture on a wire frame. Now, I love the character, and I know its not that big of an issue, and what Weta DID do was a huge accomplisment, and i would certainly never say the cgi was bad, but Gollum was always something that bothered me once i got past the "woah" factor.

I caught a snippet of Catwoman and seriously thought it was a trailer for a video game for a few seconds.

Best: Any of the last 3 Harry Potter movies.

Worst: Deep Blue Sea

best I've seen is Peter Jackson's Kong he looked like he really existed

worst not sure if it counts since it's been a while
Scorpion King in the mummy returns worst than a video game lol

I think I see where you are coming from but personally I don't agree with this idea. If I am complaining about something looking too CGI Im more so complaining about the fact that it doesn't look like it actually physical exists in the world of the film on the screen where as you could make a life size sculpture of a Ninja Turtle with amazing details and it will look like it it physically present with anyone else in the image.

I think that is why I am always in favor of practical suits and prosthetics over a CGI character. I would love to see the Ninja Turtles done with costumes done in a similar manner to the way to how the Hellboy costume was put together.

Sorry, I got carried away in my thoughts.

Jungle Book obviously had pretty impeccable CG. Granted there were a few shots that didn't keep it 100, but I doubt anyone that watched felt taken out of the flick.

Best: LOTR (the whole damn trilogy, the CG still holds up even today)

Worst: The quiddich scenes in the first few Harry Potter movies. (I rewatched the entire series just before the final movie came out and I couldn't believe how bad the CG looked in the earlier installments)

The cgi in LOTR imo doesn't hold up....particularly the final huge battle.

I'd have to revisit a TON of movies to truly determine the worst CGI I've ever seen, but one that always stuck out to me was Christopher Lee flipping around in midair in Revenge of the Sith. That was so hilariously bad.

I also recently watched the end chase seen in this awful movie called Torque. That was laugh-out-loud hilarious as well.

King Kong had some of the best and worst cgi all in the same movie (depending on the shot).

That ending chase scene, my goodness. So underrated in how bad it is.

:lmao:

That movie was a huge misstep in regards to the dark seekers. They were supposed to be intelligent, and could've been done with real actors.

The entire movie was a huge misstep. Will Smith had a terrible streak. Let's see if he ruins Suicide Squad.

I actually haven't seen Winter's Tale, but apparently Will Smith plays Lucifer and wow that looks bad.

Superman Returns had CGI head shot of him flying by, like... c'mon!!!

This is to general (specially for the worst). Almost every low budget straight to DVD movie is the worst.

Best:

Jurassic Park (1993)
King Kong (2005)
Life of Pi (2012)
The Jungle Book (2016)
