I know this was created about a month ago, but this was not a poll and since I didn't want to go back to July:

THE POLL of Kevin Smith's best films (following the DVD release of Clerks II on DVD).

Which was your favorite?

That's a tough list to choose from. They were all funny. If i had to choose it would be Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

It was a tough choice.

I guess I go with Clerks because it is the only one that has me in tears all the time. It just is a brilliant screenplay and a classic.

Chasing Amy was also very good because it was the only one he did that I thought was cleanly serious with humanistic characters (even Jay and Silent Bob).

Dogma was also really good and I enjoyed Jay and Silent Bob too...and Clerks II was enjoyable (though nowhere near as good as his old stuff). That's a lot.

Okay here's my list:

1. Clerks
2. Chasing Amy
3. Dogma
4. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
5. Clerks II

and the two I didn't like....
6. Mallrats
7. Jersey Girl

That is tough.

Dogma is probably the more polished of all of his flicks, and imo has one of the most original screen plays ever written. But there is just something about the first Clerks movie, it has this edge, and this soul, that he just completely captures what everyone who is between 19 and like 24 go through

Clerks

^I see where you are coming from with that statement. But, I voted Dogma because the film really made you think. It created debates with your friends.

I have respect for that too, Dogma in my opinion is the most original screen play ever, and Ben Afflecks powerhouse performance, I think that movie is so absolutley stellar, it is simpley fantastic. Just like I said before about Clerks, there is something about it for me, it just hit a chord with me like 3 years ago, and has been in my top 7 favorite movies ever since

I guess its all about connection.

Best : Chasing Amy, Clerks

Worst : Dogma

Ok : Clerks 2, Mallrats, Jersey Girl ( I had such low expectations, it easily surpassed them and surprised me)

Meh : Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Great: Mallrats,

Good: Clerks, Dogma

Okay: Chasing Amy, Jay and Silent Bob

Woof(!): Jersey Girl

...haven't seen Clerks II

Polished? I personally thought the story was pretty clunky. Oh, sure, it looked better, they poured more money into it, but it didn't flow very well, IMO

Hard to say. I remember really liking Mallrats, but I only saw it the one time, and for the life of me I can't remember anything specificaly great about it besides the "Who's your favorite new kid?" part. Clerks is way too overrated with bad acting. Haven't seen clerks 2. I hated Chasing Amy and Jersey Girl. I guess I'll vote Dogma.

Why are so many people hating on Chasing Amy and/or Dogma? Dogma is just funny and I would argue Chasing Amy is his most accomplished film to date, albeit I prefer Clerks though.

I explained myself for Dogma. I didn't hate it, I just thought it had a bumpy narrative. I don't quite understand how anyone can hate on Chasing Amy. Doesn't have to be your favorite, but why would you hate it? Not enough fart jokes for you?

edit: the only person who said they didn't like Chasing Amy so far was Ronny

Chasing Amy I think is Smith's most mature film, even standing against Clerks 2, its his first film about a real person (Holden) and not these hyper egotistic, a little self concioius, guys who can talk at 200 words per minute. I know he calls the scenario of the movie his "sci-fi" movie, but that isn't the point, the point is Holden never does anything right with this chick, and that is as real as anything gets, at least for me, cause I sure as hell know I never make the right desicions ether.

Like I said, Dogma is brilliance, I think Kev just gets stuck with the unfair tag, of this is just another kevin smith movie sometimes, and it really stung with dogma. Basically the only reason he has that tag is cause of mallrats, which while being hilarious I think could honestly be his worst movie

That part in Chasing Amy when they're at the hockey game and Holden is not so subtilely trying to bring up Alyssa's past...that part is damn realistic and incredibly juxtaposed with the actual hockey game and the fight that happens. I've felt the same way when dealing with g/fs and their past. One of Smith's best moments.

Plus its a very heartfelt movie at times, and deals with issues that anyone in a relationship can understand and relate to.

Plus it's hilarious.

Maybe its because none of the characters are likable. Maybe it's because the narrative boils down to what your sexual orientation is (Which is something I think shouldn't matter) Maybe it's because the all the sex talk was way unneccessary and not funny. Maybe because whenever I tell someone I draw comics they make "It's not tracing!" Chasing Amy jokes. (That gets real old real fast, believe me.)

I do like that santa-easter bunny-lesbian bit, though. And the "thats the best street lamp you ever drew" bit.

EDIT: Oh and I hate when movies revolve around sex. Hate it.

ok, well that's just a personal preference then. But movies that revolve around sex are allowed to exist, they just aren't your thing

and to be fair, I'd say the movie is about sexuality, not sex

yeah that's true. And I have no qualms with the movie existing, I'm just allowed to not like it.

But that inker part really bugs me. a lot.
