(I don't know if there is a similar thread somewhere in these boards. If there is, please delete this one)

I was wondering how good people around here thought the performances were in this film. Everybody talks about how great were the performances by the entire ensble, and how extraordinary was Bale, but what is the measure of quality? Which were the peaks of each role, the best moments for every character in both acting and writing?

Here is my list, alphabetically listed:

Alfred: (his speech to Bruce, while they destroy the Batman files - the sad glare in his eyes)

"- Today you can say 'I told you so'.
- Today, I don't want to."

"... but I did bloody tell you."

Bruce: (when the Joker told him he had Rachel too - the desperation in his voice, first time the growling revealed a human beneath them, first time I actually forgot the Joker was in the room)

"Where are they?!!"

Runner-up: "She was gonna wait for me, Alfred. Dent doesn't know. He can never know" (because Bale never goes ever the top and yet conveys sincere emotion).

Dent: (when he tosses the coin for the three: Bats, himself and Gordon - not caring for anything in the world, mad, umperturbed, proving there really was no escape)

"Tell you boy it's gonna be alright, Gordon. Lie, like I lied."

Fox: (his reaction to discovering the bat-sonar - I didn't see it coming, and it made me know the guy much more better... he had limits, and Freeman made it dead serious)

"I'll help you this one time. But consider this my resignation. As long as this machine is at Wayne Enterprises, I won't be."

Gordon: (talking to Two-Face during the kidnap of his family - the most virtuous man of the city, lying on the ground, fearing for his son's life)

"Harvey... I'm sorry! For everything! ... But please don't hurt my son."

The Joker: [wow, this is the hardest one] (the one where he's sitting in the interrogation room, taunting the policeman - sitting like a grounded boy, but letting us know that he was truly filled with evil)

"You wanna know why I use a knife? ... Guns are too quick. You can't savour all the... little emotions. In, you see... in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So, in a way, I knew your friends better than you ever did.
Would you like to know which of them were cowards?..."

Runner-up: (the wife story) "And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me! She leaves... Now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling!"

(I only regret the 360º panning that didn't let me watch his face every line)

Rachel: (hands down, it's her death scene - voice broken after minutes of screaming, and her struggle to remain stoic to calm Harvey)

"Harvey... Okay. Harvey, it's okay... it's alright, listen. Some."

:yay:

Now, which did you think were the best moments? Perhaps someone can include the likes of Maroni, Lau & the Chechen.

Wayne:

-when he looks at the computer screen with the Joker laughing, right after Alfred's speech about Burma, his face saying: "this is the enemy !!!"

Batman:

-"I killed those people, that's what I can be !"

Alfred:

-when he reads Rachel's enveloppe !

Dent:

-when continually and desperately repeating "Rachel, Rachel !!!!" as Batman forces him out of the warehouse !

-as Two face I'd also say: "Lie, like I lied !!"

Gordon:

-the last speech, just the last speech

Rachel:

-"Yeah.....letting harvey take the fall for this is not heroic AT ALL !!!"

Maroni:

-when he looks at the chechen suggesting that they should hire the Joker: "what the f**k is he saying ?????":woot:

Fox:

-"I'll help you this one time but consider this my resignation, as long as this machine is at wayne enterprises I won't be !"

and finally THE JOKER:

-when he faces the batpod: "come on come on I want you to do it, COME ON, HIT ME HIT ME !!!!!":joker:

-and when batman beats him, with his maniacal laugh: "you have nothing nothing to threaten me with !!"

Alfred: The Burma Story

Bruce Wayne: after Rachel's death, asking if he brought it on her

Batman: "WHERE ARE THEY???". runner-up: Maroni's nightclub

Gordon: "I'm sorry...for everything!"

Harvey Dent: "I am the Batman". I think that's the scene where he comes across the most as the heroic figure Gothamites look up to him as. Runner-up: interrogating Schiff

Two-Face: When Gordon says "please don't punish the boy...please punish me", and Two-Face just says "I'm about to" as he's holding the gun on his son. Just the way he says it is so cold and empty.

Rachel: When she realizes Bruce saved Harvey instead of her and is obviously shocked but trying to be stoic about it.

Fox: "Let me get this straight. You think that your client, one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck..."

Maroni: "From one professional to another, if you wanna scare somebody, pick a better spot. From this height, the fall wouldn't kill me."

Scarecrow: "I told you my compound would take you places. I never said it'd be places you wanted to go."

The Chechen: "My dogs are huuuunnnngggrrryyyy!!!! Pity there's only one of you!"

The Joker (definitely the hardest): The interrogation room scene, especially laughing while Batman is beating him. Virtually every other scene he's in could be the runner-up.

Batman
-It's a tie between the nightclub scene and "No, but I know how you got THESE!"

Bruce Wayne
-The scene in the apartment after Rachel's death. Bale nailed that scene. You feel awful for Bruce and how horrible the situation has become.

Jim Gordon
-He had so many good moments in this movie, but his last speech stands out, hands down. But "We got you, you son of a *****" comes close.

Harvey Dent
-His "I am the Batman" press conference.

Two-Face
-His final scene. "It's not about what I want. It's about what's FAIR! You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time!"

Rachel Dawes
-The warehouse scene. Maggie Gyllenhaal nailed it there.

Alfred
-"Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

Lucius Fox
-"Let me get this straight. You think that your client, one of the richest, most powerful men in the world, is secretly a vigilante who spends his nights beating criminals to a pulp with his bare hands, and your plan is to blackmail this person? Good luck." There's no beating that.

and finally...

The Joker
-It's impossible to pick just one. Every time he was onscreen was a great moment. But if I had to pick one, I'd pick his introduction to the mob bosses just for the creepy laugh. "Ahahahaha hahahahaha ha ooh hee hee aha ha ooh hee ha aha...and I thought my jokes were bad." And then to top that with the magic trick? Words can't describe how awesome that was.

Alfred: His scene with Rachel, "Even if everyone hates him for it, that's the sacrifice he's making. He's not being a hero. He's being something more"

Bruce Wayne: Probably his scenes/lines during the party scene.

Batman: "You're the symbol of hope I could never be"

Gordon: When he captures the Joker after the "hit me" scene.

Harvey Dent: Interrogation of Joker's Thug with coin flips.

Two-Face: His scene with Wuertz in the bar. Epitomizes Two-Face.

Rachel: The dinner scene with Bruce, Harvey, and the Russian dancer. She looked great.

Fox: His scene with Mr. Reese. Hilarious yet awesome.

Maroni: His scene with Two-Face.

The Joker: Why So Serious scene.

Bruce: The penthouse scene after Rachel's death, you can feel his pain, and yet I felt sorry for him too, being so naive that he really thought Rachel wouldn't stay with Dent. Great acting!

Batman: Definitely the ending, exemplifies everything he's about

Dent: When he kidnaps Schiff. I love how it shows that while Dent is good, he has a definite edge to him that we can see foreshadow things to come.

Two-Face: Scene with Wuertz "That's funny, cause I don't know what's gonna happen to you either" Lol, the way he delivers that is gold

Rachel: The scene with Alfred at the penthouse after watching Bruce not turn himself in, you can tell she is finally convinced she wants Harvey

Alfred: Describing the psyche of the Joker to Bruce, making Bruce realize for the first time that he wasn't dealing with someone normal

Gordon: Has to be the ending with Dent holding his family, "I'm sorry Harvey, for everything!"

The Joker: Why so serious? That was the first thing that unnerved me since the first trailer, and it still rings true as one of his most disturbing scenes, just look at his eyes

Fox: It was subtle, but I love how after speaking to Reese, he quickly asks Bruce if he was doing some underhanded stuff after the ballistics part. He seems to start becoming a bit uneasy with Bruce's decisions

Okay I'm not gonna do all of them, just two parts from Maroni.

when he's in the club with that girl "What makes you think I wanna hear you talk?"

and after Gambol declares the bounty on the Joker, everyone's looking serious in his direction, but look at Maroni's face. It is priceless.

I love the part on the rooftops when Gordon says, "We have to save Dent- No, I have to save Dent!"

There was so much pain in his voice. The guy has been through hell.

I'll try and keep them small, but some characters have ties:

BRUCE WAYNE/BATMAN:

-"WHERE ARE THEY?" as he pummels Joker to a pulp and succeeds at nothing.
-"But the Joker cannot win..." as he turns Two-Face's head over to Harvey in death and then says "I killed those people."
-"I believe in Harvey Dent."
-Batman sitting at the stoop above the Gordon house when it appears Jim Gordon is dead.
-When Batman swirves and does not hit Joker with the Batpod.

THE JOKER

HANDS DOWN: When he is riding in the police car with his head sticking out the window like a dog, soaking in the fear, panic and lost hope in the city he has created. In short the scene that crystalizes just what a piece of **** this guy is.

runners up:

-his entire speech and debate with Batman when hanging upside down. "You won't kill me" all the way to his maniacal laugh that promises the audience the purity of mindless evil like him will always be out there and continue to chip away at society every chance it gets.

-His entire interrogation scene with Batman.
-When he reacts to the delayed bomb explosion (classic funny Joker moment, that has to be mentioned).
-Pencil trick.

HARVEY DENT/TWO-FACE

HANDS DOWN: His entire scene in the hospital where he talks to Gordon. "SAY IT!"

runner ups:

-"I am the Batman."
-His scene with Rachel as he is tied to the bombs.
-His grabbing the gun in court and showing off his "American all-star" charm.
-His last moments of life when he lets chance judge Batman, then himself (showing his insanity) and finally was about to "judge" Gordon.

JIM GORDON

-"We've got you now, you son of a *****."
-"I'm sorry Harvey...about everything. Just don't punish my son."
-His reaction to Joker trying to crawl under his skin during the interrogation and how, unlike Batman, he is strong enough to ignore Joker's bastardly ways.
-"We have to save Harvey. I HAVE TO SAVE HARVEY."

Rachel Dawes

HANDS DOWN: Her death scene and how she handles it. "Harvey it's okay."

-Her confrontation with the Joker and standing up to him.
-"Bruce if you turn yourself in, they're not going to let us be together."
-"I'm assuming your client's cooperation with us. As will everyone."
-Her last moment with Harvey Dent before he gets on the truck.

ALFRED
-The burma story.
-"You can tell me so now Alfred," says Bruce. Alfred replies, "I don't want to. But I did bloody well tell you."
-Burning Rachel's letter.
-His moment of consuling Bruce after Rachel's death.

FOX

HANDS DOWN: "I'll do it this once, but you can take this as my resignation."

-The blackmail scene.
-Howh e handles Lau in Hong Kong.

Really a movie with a great ensemble cast. The Joker and Ledger's performance was amazing, but if people just dwell on that or rate the movie by that, they are missing so much more that makes this film so special.

For me:

Batman- All of his actions in the 3rd act of the movie, from the fight against the police, to his decision to take the fall for Dent's crimes. In my opinion, these scenes personify the idea that Bruce wanted for Batman in the first place. He was so commited to do the right thing, he didn't care what a legal system would think of him. Nothing spells Batman better. Apart from that, the interrogation scenes with Joker and with Maroni were also great for me, because they showed Batman's animalistic side, something neccessary for such a monstorous character.

Bruce Wayne- The aftermath of Rachel's death. Bale pulled off the caged animal of Bruce in this scene, trying to hold in all the terrible emotions Bruce is going through. Also, his scene sleeper-holding Dent was kick-ass, as well as rifle-whipping that thug at his party.

Joker- His scene at the hospital. He revealed so much about him, without even talking about himself. His insanity was most obvious here, and the way he drives Dent into madness was legendary.

Dent- His press conference. In here, I saw that he had a real confidence in Batman, and made me appreciate him all the more. Also, his interrogation of Schiff, which provided a grant contrast for political Harvey, and always foreshadowing for what was to come...

Two-Face- His scene at the bar. It was a real contrast from the Harvey Dent we'd seen in the rest of the movie, and it was very obvious how much damage Joker had done at this point to Dent. Eckhardt also sold it here.

Gordon- His speech at the end, of course. Following closely was his "ressurection" and arrest of the Joker. Also the pain in his voice right before Batman entering the construction site was heart-breaking.

Alfred- His speech about the bandit. It sends chills down anyone's spine, and is a great parallel to Batman's struggle with the Joker.

Lucius- The blackmail scene... Nuff' said.

There are many great scenes with all of these characters, but I’ve done my best to whittle it down to just one for each.

Batman: Taking the blame for Two Face’s deeds and riding off into the night away from the police
The Joker: Interrogation room sequence
Two Face: Holding Gordon and his family at gunpoint
Alfred: Bandit speech
Lucius Fox: Meeting Lau in Hong Kong
Maroni: Telling Batman to turn himself in

Batman: So many great moments for him in this film. I'm gonna have to go with the interrogation room. We've never seen Batman so close to the edge of blinding rage before. The scene in the penthouse after Rachel's death was also quite powerful.

Alfred: The Burma story & burning Rachel's lettter at the end. It says so much about how much he loves Bruce (not in that way, you perverts! :oldrazz:)

The Joker: Like everyone's been saying, it's almost impossible to pick just one moment. But I'm gonna have to go with the interrogation by Batman, with his final speech/upside-down scene as a close runner-up. But really, every moment he was onscreen was gold.

Commissioner Gordon: "I have to save Dent!"
The final confrontation with Batman & Two-Face was also beautifully done. All three actors brought their A-game for that scene.

Harvey Dent/Two-Face: "It's not about what I want. It's about what's FAIR!"
I just love that line. But the whole final confrontation, like I said before, is just incredible.

Rachel: The moments just before her death were quite sad & touching. But I also loved her slugging the Joker in the gut.

Lucius Fox: The speech he makes to Reese about blackmailing Batman makes me smile every time.

BATMAN: Kind of an odd choice, but him running towards the Bat-Pod after taking the blame for Dent's killings. To me, that's quintessential Batman - running away from the cops, wounded, yet still running....
BRUCE WAYNE: Bruce stitching himself up after the fight with Scarecrow and the Batmen. The allusion to Ross' art, the dialogue, and the fact that he still isn't convinced he is doing enough. Represents the character well.
ALFRED: Alfred watching the TV as The Joker terrorizes Brian Douglass. It's subtle, but if you watch him he looks truly worried for Bruce, and just plain horrified at what the Joker is capable of.
DENT: The entire warehouse scene - such pain, panic, fear, and love...all present in only a few lines of dialogue.
RACHEL: Her interrogation of Lau. The way she acts is very confident, and that is something that the Rachel from BB should've been.
GORDON: "We have to save Dent...I have to save Dent..."
TWO-FACE: There's a moment that is very hard to describe since it is only an instant. The final scene of the film (where Two Face has Gordon and his family) contains something that no other Bat-Film has given us - an exact turning point for Dent into Two-Face. Batman says "The Joker wanted to prove that even someone as good as you could fall", to which Dent responds "And he was right". On that line, the score changes to a deeper, more depressing variation on Dent's theme, and at that point you know that Dent can no longer go back to what he was before. That is exactly what Two-Face and Dent are about, and Eckhart nails it.
THE JOKER: The "All it takes is a little push" scene. He sums up his character and his relationship with Batman perfectly there...straight out of the comics.

And finally.....

THE CHECHEN: Every scene in which he was present.

:word:

I'm just gonna do a few. You guys covered most of them.
Bruce Wayne
I'm surprised none of you thought of this one, but my favorite scene for Bruce Wayne was when he, Rachel, Dent and the model are sitting at the dinner table and Harvey is discussing Batman. You just watch Bruce's face and you can tell he's so glad to hear this, he's been so worried that no-one really understands Batman, and yet here is this guy showing that someone understands why Batman's there. The subtle look of contentment and happiness on Bruce's face, just finding that this DA feels the way he does. Its really great, I love watching that every single time.

Batman
I gotta say the assault on LSI Holdings was the best Batman moment for me.

Harvey
Good side: His press conference speech. Talking about the reasons why Batman should or should not give in. You can tell he almost despises the crowd in front of him for not understanding that they are being cowards, they're giving up and letting the Joker win.

Bad side: I get chills every time I see him yell , "YOU CAN'T GIVE IN!" at Batman after the interview with Schiff. Its so very much showing you that Two-Face is waiting there, under the skin.

Lucious
"...and your plan is to blackmail this person?... Good luck." *smile* Absolutely perfect.

You pretty much listed the whole movie! :funny:

Batman:
owning the SWAT team by throwing them off the building. OWNAGE.
skyhook. OWNAGE II.
"i'm counting on it"
"where are they"

Joker:
Burning the cash. Beautiful cinematography.
Why i use a knife
Meeting the mob

Chechen:
Everything!!!

Alfred: On the yacht with the awesome white hat.
Bruce Wayne: All the James Bond scenes, but especially the Lamborghini sequence.
Batman: When he throws the SWAT guys off the Prewitt building.
Gordon: ''I have to save Dent!'' or ''We got you now, you son of a *****.''
Harvey Dent: Hostage scene
The Joker: His last scene. Floating around in his own madness. Fantastic scene.

I love the part on the rooftops when Gordon says, "We have to save Dent- No, I have to save Dent!"

There was so much pain in his voice. The guy has been through hell.

I hate this thread, but I just want to say, there's no "No" when he says "I have to save Dent"

"We have to save Dent! I have to save Dent!"

yea this thread had a good premise but people abused it and listed every great scene the characters in...which is the entire movie.

Some people got it all wrong, this thread is to point out the moments where the acting and writing was superior to all else.

YEah, that is a great moment, because Bale's face is so subtle. I caught myself thinking that maybe he wasn't doing anything and I, as a knowing fan, was seeing emotions when they weren't there.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one.

I also considered this scene a lot, Bruce seemd so at easy with his fight, that scene was so important at letting us know in what state of his fight he was in that moment.

Also, lots of people selectd Lucius blackmail speech, and that's funny. I probably chose too many tragic scenes, maybe cuz' I believe that an actor can be funny in every moment, like a person can.. but being worried, furious, desperate, crumbled, only an actor that puts himself into the story can do that. Only an actor that allows himself to care. And "caring" is an exhausting thing.

I agree some get it wrong. But it is a bit arbitrary to limit a performance to a single moment or scene. That is why I listed 3-5 for each character. Some overdid it and some just dwelled on action sequences, but no reason to condescend.

Alfred " Why don't you hire them and take them with you..

Gordon If were gonna play games I'm gonna need a cup of coffee.

Batman After he throws Maroni to the street and he tells him if you want
the joker you just need to take off that mask and Batman growls
at him.

Lucious Do them again, we wouldn't want the trust fund to run out.

Joker Are you the real Batman?....whoo hoo hooo Then why do you
dress like him?
