Err... because I didn't like living in a country where I didn't speak the language and thought the places there that spoke my language are what I liked better.

Translation: This is English speaking America and the poll is written in English.

If a foreign film is good enough, someone will eventually remake it into the English language.

White Power Bill approves of your viewpoint.

Wait a sec, Crounching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made the last poll. It had subtitles. It also, like Y tu Mama Tambien was up for best foreign film at the Oscars.

Does this mean Pan's Labyrinth will be excluded in the future?

Pan's will be in.

Because that makes logical sense. :whatever:

Yes it is. You're accusing me of being a narrowminded racist, but by doing so you are being narrowminded and racist-like.

The two statements in question are opposite sides to the same coin.
I believe we are both wrong, for the coin(racial issues - period) is flawed.

Arrogantly dismissing foreign languages doesn't do wonders for your case.

And let's not forget that you were on the one who said that "the holocaust shines brightly"...

If a movie is truely great, word of mouth will do what box offices cannot. In the case of movies not on the list, they simply don't have a big enough following via the word of mouth.

Take 25th Hour which will be in the poll for 2002. No box office draw, no awards or critical praise, no real anything. The word of mouth on it is nothing but good though. The reason it's included and not something like Ghost World is simply because more people know about it.

If a movie is hidden 'under a rock' and unknown after almost 10 years
how great can it be.

The test of time is another criteria that weighs in heavily. I hate to say it, but that's why Star Wars is still one of the best films ever made. EVERYONE on the planet has a little piece of Star Wars in them. It imbedded itself on the mind of humanity. If that's not power and strength and greatness, I don't know what it.
Im sorry but you are completely wrong about this. Ghost World isnt a little film that nobody has seen. Its actually a very talked about and popular movie. It has 38,000 votes on imdb which is not little. You just seems to know very little about it.

This one is actually far from the worst case. I can actually be ok with this one being out of the poll. The bad thing is that you chose movies like Corky Romano example. This has 4.2 rating and 6000 votes on imdb, 5% on rotten tomatoes. Obviously a completely terrible film, and forgotten film. Come on, who the hell is gonna think this movie is one of the best of the year? There is no reason this should be on the poll. You say 'it stands out', and even if it does(it doesnt) so what? It is not the 'the movie that stands out the most' thread. You have several of this on the poll. And if you havent noticed, they arent getting any votes.

Its simple. Just dont add any bad films, and add more great ones.

Also, I'm not 100% against subtitles I included Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because IT'S AN OUTSTANDING FILM that's many people know. Y Tu Mama Tambien is not.
Oh for F's sake!
You know what your problem is? Except for you F up taste, you have to accept that some of US like foreign film. Make the poll for the public's taste, not for your own.

They are not completely omitted. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is in and so is Pan Labyrinth. If this thread was all about me then niether would be in. I don't care for subtitles and niether do alot of other people. I included them and not Y Tu Mama Tambien because I feel enough people know of the other two, not just film experts.

Because they threaten your already fragile "American" worldview?

Okay, your views are your views...thats fine. However, in a poll for Best movie of the decade, don't you think you should include films that were the most critically-acclaimed of that year?
I think its only fair...even if you don't like the film yourself. Having films that you concider the best on this poll (when the majority of people would disagree) makes you poll a little biased and less efficient than it could have been.

Seriously: Pearl Harbor, Jurrasic Park 3, The Mummy Returns, Shallow Hal, Ghost of Mars, Tomb Rainder, Corky Romano, Joe Dirt, etc are usually not concidered some of the "best films"...in fact some are concidered some of the worst :o

You do realize 38,000 people is only about .0001% of the U.S. population and only .000006% of the world population?

IMDB IS NOT GOD.

People may not think Corky Romano is one of the best movies of the year but I disagree. I've never seen Corky Romano, and I honestly don't want to. I've never seen Ghost World either but might want to and I'd probably like it better than Corky Romano. Chris Kattan may be the biggest turd SNL ever dropped but that doesn't change the significance of SNL offspring and Corky Romano.

All things considered though, my personal preference clearly aside - Corky Romano is better than Ghost World.

I don't care what critics think.

I don't like any of those movies but their more significant in the grand scheme of things than others I omitted.

But...YOU'VE NEVER SEEN EITHER OF THEM!

Also, the "If it's any good they'd remake it in English" is the most ignorant, xenophobic comment I've seen in a long time. White Power Bill would indeed approve.

This thread is full of lulz and lawls.

To stay on topic though, I can never pick just one.Not only are there a good number of turds/sub par films on that list, out of the good/great ones it's too hard for me to narrow it down to one.

But...YOU'VE NEVER SEEN EITHER OF THEM!
I don't need to. I know enough to know that Corky Romano is bigger than Ghost World. Who knows, twenty years from now Ghost World may be known as a true classic - but I wouldn't hang on to that hope if I were you.

It's not xenophobic. I don't not like foriegn films because they are foreign, I simply would rather, 9.9999 times out of 10, see a film in my native language and unfortunately for your arguement - most people agree. Language aside, people don't want to see foreign films - that's the bottomline.

Now if I said I hated these films because they were Spanish or German or Italian then that would be xenophobic. A good film should be universal in it's dialogue and English is the most widepread language.

I'm not sure if I enabled the multiple choices feature, I did in the last one.

Wow, Corky Romano? Really, I thought everyone hated that. Oh well, no accounting for tastes I sup-

I've never seen Corky Romano, and I honestly don't want to.

Whu-? But... Huh?

The significance of Chris Kattan?

WTF?

I don't need to.

The moving image is universal. The language is secondary.

By the way, you are aware that there are more Mandarin-speaking people in the world than English-speakers, right?

Now if I said I hated these films because they were Spanish or German or Italian then that would be xenophobic.

You did. You just didn't single them out. You won't watch them because they're in their native language. You essentially demand that as a prerequisite for them to be any good they must be presented in English.

A good film should be universal in it's dialogue and English is the most widepread language.

FAIL.

Oh they did. The line between love and hate is a fine one though and we can't deny - many know about it and many people saw it.

There's also a fine line between clever and stupid...
