Best Twist/Shock Endings

Wasn't there a previous thread like this like last week?

Anyways, Empire Strikes Back. THE ultimate twist ending.

Oldboy's ending is outstanding and really tweaks the nerve. Sleepaway Camp needs to be mentioned too just because its so funny.

I gotta agree with you on Oldboy. One of the few "twist" endings nowadays that most don't see coming half way through the film.

My local video rental store doesn't have Oldboy on dvd or video.:(

The best ending was from revenge of the sith. It was a real shock to see Tarkin there as a young man and the death star being built. It looked so new..it was incredible.

Machstick Men. It wasnt the best ending but man did I feel bad for Nic Cage's character.

Planet of the Apes (1968 of course!). Nearly forty years old and still the mother of all twist and shock enddings. I would love to have been in the theater on opening night and bared witness to the crowd's reaction!

The problem with many "twist" enddings is that even if you don't know what the actual twist is a buzz gets created around a movie that if you don't see it right away you go in knowing something happens - you just don't know what and it takes a bit of the whole experience away. I still haven't seen Fight Club (even though I own it) and now from reading this list apparently there is a twist that I didn't know about - D'Oh!

I do applaud the movie going public with the Sixth Sense. There was almost a collective agreement not to spill the beans about the actual endding which was great but going in you still knew something happened unless you saw it the first weekend out.

Have you tried the special dvd stores ? Dunno where you exactly live in Holland , but they have the special rental stores with lots of the more cinematic flicks as opposed to the more commercial movies.
If you're in Amsterdam , try the Cult Videotheek . They must have it.

And speaking of the ending of Oldboy. I knew the ending before i saw the movie , but god is that gross or what . Blegh :(

Da Vinci Code had the biggest twist...who expected it to be such crap??

The ones who read the book :p

Seriously tough , even with all the hype i think the book and the movie both suck. The only good things about the movie were the flashbacks. Great production designs.

everything about the production was top notch, cast, director, crew, plot...yet somewhere it became well crap

I can tell you why i think the movie was crap IMO

1 You really had to suspend you're belief . I mean Tom character seeing all those immediatly just isn't natural. We'd at least expect some background as to how he understands certain things etc.
2 Acting. Aside from McKellen , everyone was acting on autopolit ( hanks , tatou) to downright awful ( the rest of the cast)

The funny thing is, my friend guessed it as a joke, and none of us, including him, believed it.

Thanks for the tip.:)
I'm in Almere but used to live in Amsterdam. I haven't checked the specialist dvd shops here yet. As a matter of fact i'm not even sure where they are located in this city.:O

I found it odd that Videoland didn't have Oldboy cause you can rent lots of other asian hit flicks there. The manager hadn't even heard of Oldboy.

That sucks.:down
I remember watching a programme and they ruined the ending of The Crying Game.Or a cousin of my blurted out what happened to Neo in the Matrix Revolutions. I was so pissed. :(

Planet Of The Apes still has the most symbolic of all twist endings.

I love the psychologic angle of the endings of Fight Club and Memento. You follow or chase this character all the movie, then you find out it was all in your own mind.

And yet, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari did it first, and did it 79 years prior.

Well it was my doing that i knew the ending of Oldboy :o
'Cause of the fact that most movies don't open on the same date as in the states , i try and just read the spoilerific summaries of those movies. It actually helps lot cause i then know whether i should pay for a flick or not.
ANyways doing that i accidently read the ending of Oldboy. I really got pissed about that cause the movie has that more of an impact when you watch it spoilerfree.

As for Oldboy in the dvd shops. IMO most asian flicks they have are the ASIAMANIA flicks and/or the more commericial movies such as the Jackie Chan ones , JEt Li or the ones that had a relative good showing in the cinemas ( Infernal Affairs). I agree that Oldboy is hard to find in rental stores like Videoland. ANd to be honest i don't think Almere has those special rental stores although i could be wrong .
JUst try and hit the cult videotheek on Amsterdam. Can't miss it. It's across the metrostration of WaterloopPlein.

Edit :
Have you also tried the FilmClub in Almere

I did the same thing with The Village, and was shocked when I saw the ending. I laughed my ass off for guessing that.

Batman Begins had it's moment with the joker card, I wasn't expecting that at all.

Mine would be.

Sixth Sense
Unbreakable
Batman Begins
Donnie Darko.

I would say The Unusual Suspects but I guessed the ending and I was right.

Matchstick Men
Oh come on, I got the ending to that from watching the trailer... The fact that it actually was the ending totally ruined what was a pretty good flick.

I already knew about the Joker card days before the movie came out.
