Beware the Batman

No show starts off with a bang these days when there is higher competition, not to mention your comments like "villains with no background" is something a serialized format will tangle on, it's not like all villains we're introduced with origin stories in BTAS or something.

Pretty much all the B- or C-tier villains in BTAS were given origins, and even a few of the A-class ones. They were given origins that defined the characters for multiple mediums as well, such as Mr. Freeze's new origin in BTAS which has been hugely influential.

It seems very strange to me to want to introduce C- and D-listers in this show and then not really tell us anything about who they are aside from external quirks. If the purpose is to allow these villains to shine, the execution isn't meeting that goal.

And "competition is tough" isn't an excuse for mediocrity.

What i meant to say is that the first episode of the Joker for example, it was not his origin story, infact the only real background for the Joker was found in "Mask of Phantasm" a movie, Harley Quinn's origin wasn't till New Adventures of Batman if i can recall right.

Hence, while i am disappointed with Anarky, i do want to see him develope and as the show progresses, you and i will both learn the backgrounds of villains and heroes alike, thats what i was saying.

Batman: The Animated Series had a completely different approach from this show. That show is more episodic, so they had to cram more info about the villains. This show is more serialized and building up its cast and setting up story and character arcs, so it's telling its story at a more natural rate.

We learned quite a lot about Magpie. From SDCC reports, we also learn about Humpty Dumpty in his premiere.

Also, considering this show is focusing on the protagonists as much as the villains, I can be patient in learning about the latter. We're getting more backstory on Katana this week, so I'm prioritizing the protagonists first. They've already mentioned that all of the villains we've seen will be recurring throughout the season and we've got 23 episodes left. So no need to rush.

The music is so entertaining in this series, you don't hear anything like it in any other cartoon afaik. This looks like the most action packed episode yet!

It's too bad they went and ****ed Freeze's background in the New 52.

I...don't really have a lot to say about the latest episode. I'm not sure what to think about Anarky, though I think he has potential. Wallance Langham sounded pretty good as him, and the chess motifs here were a nice touch.

This wasn't as Katana-focused as I hoped for, though I enjoyed what little we got. That glowing sword is most likely setting up a future storyline with her, and I look forward to that.

Young Justice was so much better than this. The animation is awful, the villains suck, even Batman the Brave and the Bold was more entertaining despite its campiness. If the toys from this show don't sell well, it will get cancelled I guess, with that horrible looking Batman and lame villains no one cares about, is more than a possibility, time will tell.

Except....it's already been picked up for another season. Mitch (creator of the show) said it's doing great and they're prepping season 2.

And I think we can all agree we'd trade in every show on earth to get back Young Justice.

Source on this?

There was some confusion at the SDCC panel. They talked about the second half of the season when some reporters mistook it as a second season.

so much wrong in this post it's not even funny.

Also, I like how every time a new tv show is released, some people are like ""oh noes it sux, it ain't teh awesome like TAS is. I only LUV TAS because it is teh better evar"."

I guess I'm the only one who didn't think Young Justice was all that great. I just didn't care about it.

Pretty much how I feel about GL:TAS.

Doesn't mean I was whining and blaming its existence when Brave and the Bold ended around the time that began.

Hate to tell you this but toy sales aren't really that much of a thing anymore for these shows. It's not the 80s. This Batman is the best Batman portrayal since BTAS and I have no problem saying that given time this Batman may surpass the BTAS one.

That's a rational way of seeing things.

Yeah, hating all the new shows that "replace" them is NOT going to bring them back. I may hate how Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble are disrespectful to the characters they adapt and to the shows before them, but it eventually gets old and counterproductive and I could do better things with my life.

So, yeah, it's cool to dislike things on their own merits, but I could get drunk and die on how many times I read "they killed GL:TAS/YJ for THIS" when it comes to this show or TTGo!

Yeah people really misjudge Teen Titans Go! It's a funny show like nothing else. It's worth the watch. I have a thread dedicated to that show where I post my reviews of it. I've only given one episode a bad score because they're all good and funny.

Oh and I love the show so much that I made my avatar a line from Go!

So give shows a chance, BTB is not B:TAS but it's good on its own merits.

The complainers with their "these villains suck!" attitude also demanding to bring back GLTAS and YJ make me scratch my head, considering neither show also didn't focus on A-list villains. GLTAS had Anti-Monitor and Red Lanterns, YJ's most popular villains we're Black Beetle, Reach, Black Manta and Vandal Savage. :b

I personally love that they are exploring the lesser known villians...

Yes, Anarky wasn't great, but being the main antagonist he does have some time to grow.

You are mistaken, toy sales have a lot to do with it:

Bruce Timm:

Since the Ryan Reynolds’ film, retailers were stuck with film merchandise that just wasn’t selling. This led to those retailers being very reluctant, if not downright refusing, to any carry merchandise from the Animated Series. Therefore, a lack of sales on that front lead to a lack revenue for an admittedly expensive CG series.

That is why most of these cartoons exist: To sell toys and comic books to kids. Basically 30 minute commercials.

This week's episode was a great bounce back after last week's sub-par episode.

Good:
Bruce Wayne the businessman and his quick costume change.
The League of Assassins!
Lady Shiva (heard but not shown) and Silver Monkey!
Tatsu and the Soultaker Sword!
Wayne Manor under assault!
Ninja motorcycle pursuit! (Liked the joke about traffic. Meta commentary on the show?)

Bad:
Dr. Burr sucked and was waaay into Tatsu too much.

That was a good episode. I loved the "Wayne manor is a fortress" line and it does "feel" like one. Too bad Batman was able to so easily get into it.

I'm surprised Bruce didn't do a through background check on the hired security guard.

Silver Monkey was cool but he got his monkey butt handed to him by Batman.

The doctor was so stupid and annoying. I don't know why he needed to act that way. I can see him being grateful to Katana for helping him but man did he need to be that goofy?

I like the cg in the show. The smoke and fire look great along with the subtle textures.

Yes also noone watched that show. That's why it was cancelled. Plus Cartoon Network was making way for this one. Toys are a thing of the past. Back in the day you'd see 100s of variations of BTAS toys. Now there are no Beware the Batman toys in any store other than maybe a toys r us but even them probably don't carry them. Kids just aren't into that sort of stuff anymore.

Are you insane?

Toys and merchandise are essential to expanding the brand advertised on TV

No merchandise = no income.

Animation doesn't come cheap when you're exporting to other countries.
