Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

Which is pretty sad considering this actually looks really good. Cathy yan is very talented, and I think deserves to be given a chance.

While I don't really like repeating the meme but "That's like your opinion, man." To me this didn't look that special. On the other hand, I have vague memories of the tv show and those memories weren't very good either :funny: but I still expected something resembling the characters or even the Huntress from Arrow but no, I get Harley Quinn and some uninteresting other women.

So, looking at the movie releases a week before and some weeks after BoP release week, how will the competition affect this movie ?

January 31, 2020

- Gretel and Hansel (Sophia Lillis)
- The Rhythm Section (Blake Lively)

February 7, 2020

- Birds of Prey

February 14, 2020

- King's Man (Aaron Johnson, Matthew Vaughn, Rhys Ifans)

- Sonic the Hedgehog (Jim Carrey, James Marsden, Tim Miller)

February 21, 2020

- Bloodshot (Vin Diesel, Neal H. Moritz, Dave Wilson)

- The Call of the Wild (Karen Gillan, Dan Stevens, Harrison Ford)

Trailer looked damn good and I loved every second of it. It had action but then it also showcased Harley even more crazier than ever and honestly I loved it. DCEU is pulling out all the stops and pulling no punches here. This trailer had a Deadpool type vibe to it but then it felt like a superhero movie but with it's own twist. Love that Ewan is not only in this film but that he is playing the villain in this.

Not a lot of competition in February other than Sonic but I'm sure BOP will beat Sonic easily.

But I swear doesn't Bond 25 come out Valentine's Day weekend

A strong movie could easily take the month. The Kingsman franchise averages $400M per movie WW. I really don't see any of those other movies coming close. A good or similiar to SS should be able to do at least $600M for a Rated R movie.

The tone of the trailer seemed so awkward and try hard. Ewan and Margot were a lot of fun in the trailer as was the action but mostly everything else looks pretty suboptimal. The costumes for the rest of the characters are horrible, generic and lazy as ****. When Brandon Routh can get such an incredible costume in a tv show ala KC Superman yet a huge budgeted hollywood film results in costumes that are totally garbage, dull, lifeless, colorless, then its just crap filmmaking. The only one who shines is Harley (gee surprise!!). The least they could do is create costumes that help the other characters stand out more and more distinguishable. They literally look like nondescript filler characters.

I have a feeling this will be better way better than Suicide Squad...hell this trailer looked so great that it is what Suicide Squad (2016) should have been

Which means absolutely nothing. Nolan has an EP credit for JL.
Which means he is getting some money. Some fans think that WB meddled with Ayer's version of Suicide Squad. But since this can be seen as a spin-off from that movie, he's getting the EP credit for this, so that's small consolation.

It would only make sense for one of the Suicide Squad members to show up in this film as a cameo appearance to build towards Suicide Squad (2021)...I would go for Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) to show up and it would make sense too or even have Idris Elba's character show up in a post credits scene of BOP

According to the test screenings, it's super R rated mainly because of the violence & swearing. Wouldn't be surprised if she recorded the line for the trailer
The line will most likely be "Harley ****in Quinn" in the movie.

If it goes PG 13, that line will be the one freebie F bomb.

Suicide Squad had great trailers but the movie was a let down. I hope that won't be the case here.

In all fairness, Jimmy likes pretty much anything DC puts out, no matter how bad it is. He is one of their higher-ups, after all. I mean, I think I recall him defending the Jonah Hex film from years ago,(. Don't quote me, it's been years) while saying he didn't care for the original Guardians of the Galaxy film (THAT part, I remember vividly).

The back up dancers faces and the image behind Roman could be an indication of what his mask could look like.IMG_20191001_153303.jpg IMG_20191001_153449.jpg

Since this movie will be just introducing some members of Birds of Prey and we will learn about the origins of BoP, they wanted costumes that can be made using everyday clothes, it would look odd to see comic book accurate costumes right from the start as the team is not fully formed and they have not really started the crime-fighting, so basically they are just regular people not super-heroes. Think how Jessica Jones looked in her Netflix series.

Besides, in Marvel's Defenders, how comic book accurate costumes were these ?

I find the whole "Costumes" narrative silly when it comes to DC movies. We do the same run around every time.

Superman? "His suit is too dark, it's suppose to be bright"
Shazam? "He looks silly with fake muscles"
Aquaman? "His costume doesn't translate well to live-action along with Mera, too bright"
Mera in JL? "Her suit is too dark, where's the color?"
Wonder Woman? "She looks like Xena, where's the color?"
Wonder Woman 84 Diana? "Too bright, too much color"
Suicide Squad? "Where are their costumes, how come Will Smith doesn't have a mask?"

"Why can't DC make comic-accurate heroes"

*Shows them Shazam!*

"He looks stupid and fake"

Damned if they do, damned if they don't...

I have the least expectation for this movie but that trailer was pretty good. I honestly wouldn't be bothered by the movie title and its lack of focus on the other characters at all, if what we get in the end is a good movie.

Only disappointment is the characterization of Cassandra Cain.

This girl looks timid, scared, confused... while Cass was an unstoppable trained assassination at like the age of 10. She was one of the few great new additions to Bat-Lore post-90's pre-New 52.

NML started it, and then her first run, her Batman runs solidified her greatness. Sadly, they din't know what to do with her after Murder/Fugitive.

The Netflix Defenders are an excellent comparison for BOP in both lack of costuming and the name not matching the lineup.

Yes and that was totally lazy filmmaking on their part. The costumes of nearly all of the netflix shows have been utter garbage and lazy. Defenders was also a totally garbage show but that’s a separate point.

I’ve loved the DC movie costumes so far in pretty much every movie; even in suicide squad, each character I felt visually stood out and looked distinct. I don’t see that here with this film so far.

I do see your point though about them being intro characters if that’s how the narrative plays out on screen; their costumes still look pretty generic thus far

I think this looks like a fun time. With the same anarchic spirit as SS, but hopefully with a better script (which seems likely). That said, I'm just going to have to pretend it's NOT called Bird of Prey while I watch it, lol.

Also, that shot of Ewan appearing to have some sort of mental break makes me very interested in seeing their interpretation of Black Mask. It would just be nice to actually see a black mask on him at some point.
