Sony Spin-Off Black Cat/Silver Sable spinoff film

Personally, I'm not at all bothered by this plot...there's a lot of potential with this plot. Remove the main characters names and it could just as well be an action, mystery, spy, thriller. I'm given this particular spinoff a chance, til I learn a bit more.

Imo...this much better than the proposed Venom film. A much better plot & appear to have better usage of characters.

Thanks for the info. Sounds every bit as terrible as I feared, with Sony just throwing various Spider-man characters into the blender just to see what comes out.

I'm skeptical of that plot synopsis, because we *know* Marvel has Roxxon. I seriously doubt the Sony deal included "unlimited ability to use setting elements we own in whatever random movies you make".

And I think Marvel owns Jessica Drew as well.

It's complicated and split. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't make sense that Sony should have rights to Jessica Drew, but they do. Marvel can include Jessica Drew and call her Jessica Drew, as long as she doesn't have the outfit, isn't called Spider-Woman, and doesn't have her powers.

Doesn't have *Spider Powers*, mind. That whole clause is vague on what counts as a "spider power". I mean, her traditional powers are "general physical bufs", "flight", "energy blasts", and "pheromones", none of which really cross over with Spider-man except the physical buffs. I suspect her powerset is okay, as long as they don't call them "spider powers" ( "venom blast" probably needs a rename ), and as long as she doesn't get them from a spider bite or similar source.

Also Dominic Fortune was going to be in the cancelled tv show Most Wanted, so Marvel owns that character.

director Gina Prince-Bythewood likens “Silver & Black” to buddy films such as “Thelma & Louise” and “Midnight Run

“I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive,” says Prince-Bythewood. She’s been looking at the origins of each character in order to explain how Silver Sable became a killer for hire and why Black Cat is drawn to crime. In both cases, she found that the characters were haunted by the deaths of their parents. “Silver & Black” sounds darker than “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which played like a John Hughes comedy with more spandex.
Against my better judgement I'm starting to get actually intrigued by this project. I won't lie... if this movie does happen (still doubt it will) and it's good... yeah, I'll watch it. In theater.

Just leave Jessica Drew and Mac Gargan out of it, please. They belong to the MCU.

I'm also somewhat intrigued at the premise of this. Let's see what else unfolds further ahead....

Silver & Black

Here are some details about the story: Seven years after Mendel Stromm (a.k.a. Robot Master) and his two henchmen (The Scorpion and The Tarantula) killed her father, Silver Sable is hired by the government to find Felicia Hardy. The Black Cat, a master hacker and thief, has apparently stolen valuable secret information. She’s hiding in the lawless and dangerous triple frontier area between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil.

Once there, Sable ask her old contact Dmitri Smerdyakov (a.k.a. The Chameleon) to locate her. But it seems, the government are not the only ones looking for the Black Cat. It seems Felicia had made a deal Stromm to save her father from a Russian prison and she’s been genetically enhanced. Now, the mad scientist wants his prized experiment back because his financier (cough Norman Osborn cough) wants a return on his investment.

There’s no appearance or mention of Peter Parker or Spider-Man. Also in the story: Dominic Fortune, Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), Roxxon Oil, Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter), Lonnie Lincoln (Tombstone) and Charles Standish

Arrgh too many cameos. Chameleon could work but that's all they need.

This could have the potential to a cool spy vs spy, hitman espionage type flick with John Wick action.

They keep piling cameo's into this, it's going to turn into Wolverine origins.

I wouldn't say they're piling on cameos...some of these characters seem to have a vital role, in the overall scheme of things. CA:WS had a number of what appear to be, "characters by name recognition" piled in the film...but each of them had a role either in establishing the main character or aiding the plot. I see no difference, at this point, given this synopsis.

Agreed. Just having a lot of named characters from the Spider-verse does not mean SM3 or TASM2.

The main difference is, Marvel Studios has a proven track record of handling large rosters well. Sony. . . is how "Spider-man 3" became the shorthand for "too many characters".

I think ASM2 is a better example of Sony's inability to execute a multiple villains format. SM3 suffered from too many hands involved. If Sam was left alone, with director's atonomy, SM3 may have turn out better than it did.

That is not to ignore what Sony has done to this point(2-2-3); I'm just a little more optimistic that Sony has learned something thus far from Marvel, how to go about making these types of film & putting in some real effort in all factors of creating a film & the process it curtails.

Btw...that 2-2-3 is Sony's record imo, of comics into films.

Sure, TASM 2 was worse in that. Its just, Spider-man 3 had the same type of error, and had it first, so it gets to be the one to name the error.

Spider-man 3 also probably feels a bit more raw because of how each individual villain showed *serious* potential in some way before falling apart, while ASM just felt rushed on most of its villains. Sandman was well cast and had that excellent origin scene, Harry had been built up effectively over two previous films, Venom looked awesome, and all three had some amazing fight scenes. And arguably only Topher Grace and the civilian elements of Venom were intrinsically stupid. ASM2 had a pretty flawed concept for Electro pre-transformation, and while he had plenty of creative sequences and a kick-butt musical theme, Rhino was strictly a sideshow and Goblin was way too rushed.

My concern with Sable and Cat is that while both have had some success, neither has ever been more than minor characters, usually dependent on Spider-Man for media appearances.

Early 2019 is a good sign. I don't know if Sony wants to make Silver & Black R-rated like Venom, but as long as they trust Gina Prince-Bythewood with a similar vision Patty Jenkins had, they'll have a potentially good film to work with.

It's quite possible, given the director's previous films. I could see Gina casting a Latino/black actress as Silver Sable, for one.

As long as the actresses are good and true to the spirit of the comics, ethnicity doesn't really matter.

I can't wait for this as I've wanted to see Silver Sable and Black Cat in full costume for quite some time. I don't think they have much space in the MCU especially with Spidey pretty much teaming up with the Avengers in the films that he is appearing in the future.

I'm actually kinda hoping it happens, I just wonder if it will. haha!

Bythewood is starting to hire BTS personnel for the film, which begins filming early 2018 in Atlanta. She's hired Ruth E. Carter (Black Panther, Serenity) as costume designer and visual effects supervisor Sheena Duggal (Doctor Strange).

I expect them to announce casting for the two leading ladies by the end of the year, if not January 2018.
