People will sue anything and everything here in the U.S.
People here might well try, but it is practically impossible to sue a public authority here. You have to effectively win two law suits, one under administrative law and another under tort.

A cartoonist I'm friends with on Facebook posted these today. Anybody else pissed off by these? I mean, how would THIS GUY have handled the situation differently if it were up to him I wonder...He seems to hate the same dumb stuff the government does that I hate but in this situation I find both these to be missing the mark. Thoughts?

I'm as liberal as they come and even I think this whole "we're a jingoistic police state" rhetoric seems to be a little much as of late when it comes to having priorities in order.

Those are actually pretty nice.

It kinda hits the mark, but idk about the circumstances.

Perhaps I'm just not fully appreciating the severity of the charges, but I'm astonished that there are no actual murder chargers included (being charged for an action that results in death is not the same as being charged with murder), no resisting arrest, not assault of police officers with a deadly weapon, etc. There's so much more this kid could (and should) of been charged with.

I believe this is just the federal charges...he may face a whole bunch of local charges as well.

Does it really matter tho? What they charged him with will get him countless life sentences with no chance of parole. We all know what they did and the events and aftermath of the events are recorded. No reason to complicate the case with a bunch of charges that pale in comparison to stuff like "weapons of mass destruction and terrorism charges". That isn't to say the deaths don't matter just that we should hit him with the biggest charges and bury him under the jail. No need to charge him with everything he did. And "acts of terrorism" is kind of a blanket charge that includes harm and death he caused.

The most disturbing recent trend I have seen, is people calling America "the homeland".

Well, long as it's not "fatherland".

 This country has been called many nicknames in its 200+ years and that seems like a logical nickname. This country is our Homeland. Whats the problem?

And lets not forget we have a Homeland Security.

Well, it's hard for me to explain the power words have over an internet forum. But try finding that word used in a speech pre-9/11.

The word was almost never used before 9/11. America was the Union, the Republic, never "the Homeland". It sounds like something out of the 1930's. Fatherland, homeland, motherland, etc. It's meant to evoke a notion of "us and them". It's a word the reactionaries popularized in the aftermath of 9/11.

Things change. The last 13 years have had a major impact on this country. Words don't really scare me as much as the meaning or intent. Homeland doesn't bother me because it is our homeland, but if like you say the name is used as a mission statement by a group to subject or lord over others then I got a problem with It.

This country is going through a metamorphosis no doubt.

I don't know, maybe I'm slightly naive but I see those cartoons drawn up there with the swat team at the door and the little girl answering it and it does nothing for me. I'm all for privacy. Trust me, I don't like people intruding on my space but I've lived with the thought process of, if I have nothing to hide, then whats the problem. And I know that way of thinking is slightly flawed way of thinking but I'm not going to throw a hissy fit over someone wanting to check my backpack or something at an event.

Things like this just make me shake my head and wonder how truly dim bulb people are sometimes. Criticizing the feds and maybe law enforcement in general. Saying that they the feds knew about this kid for about a year and did nothing, He had gone to various websites about the Jihad and other things. Just because that kid went to those sites didn't deem him a threat at the time, and the feds couldn't do anything at that time. Funny the feds either get criticized for moving too swiftly or to slowly about how they go after would be suspects. And then this about how long they can question this kid without be lawyered up. It was said that there is a public safety act that allows this true? If so it was also said it didn't matter that there was enough for this kid to be locked up forever and the key thrown away.

This....I didn't really see the issue....in Boston they were looking for a terrorist...now if they were just doing random house searches for no reason then yeah I could see why it would upset people.

Its sensationalism. I get the need to protect our rights, but when a dangerous bomber and murderer is running around on the loose you need to get over yourself and stop acting like its all about you.

They wanted to search houses, and they had a great reason. The authorities don't have time to worry about the pot plants in your toilet and the bootleg music and DVDs on your computer so let em in.

If it was a search with no reason then sure resist, but they had plenty of reason to search houses.

As for the cartoons, I actually like the second one as it applies in several ways, most notably in the false identification of suspects drummed up by the internet and the media. The New York post running a cover saying "BAG MEN- FIND THESE MEN" with a picture of two individuals that were in no way suspects was pretty terrible.

Pretty much. I got pulled over once because my car matched the description according to the cop (it's a 2007 silver Toyota Camry :whatever:). He asked for my license and registration pulled my info up and saw I wasn't the droid they were looking for, yet he asked if I would mind if he checked my car anyway and I said yes I do mind. He seemed taken aback by that and asked if I had something to hide and I simply said no but there's no reason for him to check my car. He let me go but I did get a ticket the next day for rolling through a stop. I think he was in on it.:o

If a terrorists, who had blown up innocent men, women, and children during a footrace through my city, then had a couple days later killed a local policeman sitting in his car and then had had a 10 minute gunfight while throwing multiple bombs at the police were thought to be in my area.....I wouldn't have the slightest amount of hesitation to invite the police into my house to look around....I would want them to come in and look around.

When people complain about how they came to people's doors armed with their guns drawn....I have to say....have you ever watched the news or a movie or a TV show? Bad people hide in houses. Sometimes they tell the people who open the door for the cops to tell them that they are alright and all alone. The police have to go in ready for anything and search.

The people making these cartoons do it from the comfort of their safe house or office. If they had been in watertown friday in their house with their children they would have been singing a different tune practically begging the police to find this guy. They would have been wanting cops searching everything so they could find this guy. Its easy to say its somehow wrong or unjust what these cops were doing when they weren't experiencing the fear and anxiety of these Bostonians.

I don't think I would be against police searching my house looking for a terrorist.

If I ever meet anyone in real life who thinks the Boston double-amputee victims were hired actors, there's going to be another amputee victim: me, after I break my foot up your ass. - Maddox
