Bought/Thought for July 14th, 2010 with SPOILERS!

If Cyclops gave a damn about the lives of his team members he wouldn't have sent X-Force to their deaths.
No, that's not true at all. That was the only way to win; everybody acknowledged that, and every single member of the team volunteered for the mission. Heroes do that sort of thing all the damn time.
The fact is that ever since Messiah Complex, Cyclops didn't give a damn about who lives or dies. It's why he created X-Force and sent Wolverine to kill Mystique for her betrayal. It's why so many have died in Second Coming.
Name one person whose death could be attributed to Cyclops not caring. People died because the villains were extremely powerful, not because of Cyclops; in fact, he guided the X-Men through the storm, saving mutantkind.

Likewise, creating X-Force to fight genocidal villains and serial-betrayers like Mystique (who's killed, among others, Moira) isn't indicative of any change in sentiments toward normal people.

Cool week, topped off by going into Half-Priced Books, and finding a first printing of the large, hardcover Elektra Lives Again by Frank Miller. I have pretty much every Elektra appearance; but, I was missing that comic and the last two issues of Elektra: Assassin. What was also kind of neat was they had three copies of the 70's trade paperback, Origin Of Marvel Comics. I didn't want to spend $24.99 on it, though.

Anyway, more reviews.

Girl Comics #3

This three-part mini took a while to come out. I remember having Colleen Coover and another female artist sign my issue #1 back in March. It's kind of neat to see Marvel recognize the female writers and artists, especially those who are from Marvel's past. Some have gone on to different careers; but, they contribute some new material for this project.

Now, none of the stories will exactly blow you away; but, they're all nicely done. Some are even a throwback to yesterday, like with Louise Simonson's Power Pack story. (The kids babysit Cable when he was just a baby.) My biggest complaint might be that I want more than just a 2-page introduction by Colleen Coover. I've always been a fan of her art, and except for a Spider-Man Summer Special, she's been relegated to backstories in pretty much everything I've seen her done. :yay:

World War Hulks: Captain America Vs. Wolverine #1

Another WWHs mini...the first being the Hulkpool 2-parter that came out a couple months back. These two that came out this week feel a little late, as if memory serves me correctly, the Hulkified heroes have changed back already. Still, the Hulkpool comic was kind of funny. And, this one by Paul Tobin isn't half bad either. I just find this concept rather corny and embarrassing.

I love the art in this comic, and Tobin is a pretty good writer; so, I'm not surprised to see him turn this lemon of an idea into a decent lemonade. The highlight, though, is the backstory of when Wolverine met the Winter Soldier way back when. It kind of makes you tolerate the silly WolverHulk and BuckyHulk showdown mixed throughout the issue. :yay:

World War Hulks: Spider-Man Vs. Thor #1

This issue, though, isn't nearly as good as the previous. I'm slightly interested when it comes to backstory Thor tales...but, SpiderHulk and ThorHulk look ridiculous, and takes my attention away from anything worthwhile in this story. Skip this one...check out the previous...and, if you're a Deadpool fan, his time travel Hulkpool adventure was entertaining and fun.

Marvel Super Hero Squad #7

Yes. There are times I severely question my devotion to being a Marvel completionist. I've bought some truly terrible Marvel comics...and still do...all because I have a yearning for owning all their stuff. (And, YES, I have even been purchasing at bargain bin prices old issues of Alf!) This comic obviously is targeted to a younger audience...MUCH YOUNGER...as, I can plainly state that it's the worst comic Marvel currently puts out. Every story is pretty much the same...very comic versions of classic Marvel heroic characters compete with the Marvel baddies to find fractuals, which are pieces of the Cosmic Cube basically. The heroes win in the end, and the bad guys are made to look like complete childish fools. Oh my gosh...it's just so bad...so terribly unfunny.

Adventure Comics #516

I don't know about this comic. It's not that it's bad...it's just that each issue really doesn't go out of it's way to make you want to pick up the next. Levitz does a good job telling us old (or is it new) stories of Legion's past (or is it future). See, I'm a bit confused. Somehow, Superboy is back with the Legion; but, the stories seem like reflections on the origin of the Legion. This issue, we get the origin of R.J. Brande. It's interesting, in that I've never read it before...but, it also feels like since the events ending The War Of The Supermen, that "The Early Years" are being rewritten. (Thus, things that happened before might not have happened?? I don't know. Maybe it's best not to try and understand it.)

The new backup feature is The Atom, spinning out of the one-shot that I reviewed last week. I simply don't care about The Atom, and found myself somewhat bored. (Oh, Atom's father isn't dead as it appeared at the end of the one-shot...he had a stroke, and is now hanging on by a thread.) :yay: for the Legion "Early Years" story. :csad: for the backup.

Second Coming: Revelations - Hellbound #3

This was kind of a useless story. The team of X-kids are sent to Limbo to retrieve Magik, a teleporter who can help the X-Men survive the attack by Bastion and crew....and, even though they save her in the end, she isn't even used past this in the main story. Basically, this is loosely based on Second Coming, and is a way to suck more money out of the reader. It didn't enhance the Second Coming storyline in the least...and, ends up just making me more tired of Pixie, the X-character that Marvel keeps trying to shove down our throats.

Invincible Iron Man #28

Oh.....My....GOD! Is this some insane experiment by Marvel and Fraction to see how long readers will last without a bit of action in an Iron Man comic??!!?? We get so much time devoted to Tony rebuilding his company, heading in a new direction of peace, and absolutely zippo in actual thrills. The Justine Hammer stuff does keep me coming back; but, the slow pace is killin' me.

Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #2

Not as good as the first issue; but, still pretty enjoyable...especially the art. This comic reminds me very much of The Search For Bruce Wayne, as Spidey and Wolverine are going through time in the same way Batman is; yet, for some reason, this tale isn't as groan-worthy. Maybe it's because the writer doesn't take himself as seriously, or acts like he's producing some great event. I just wish it didn't take so long for the next issue to come out. :yay:

X-Force: Sex And Violence #1

I guess with the new X-Force team, this is essentially a backstory. Still, it's fun, and I love the emphasis on Domino, an underrated character who hasn't been used very much since back in the original X-Force early days. (She kind of bombed out after we learned most of her appearances weren't really her, but Copycat. I think that was the character's name, at least.) I like Dell'Otto's art much better than Crain's...even though they are somewhat similiar. And, Wolverine mackin' on Domino was a neat full-page spread. :yay:

Got my shipment today. It was a great afternoon of comic book reading. Yes, indeed.

BATMAN # 701 - Finally we get the story that was between Batman RIP and Final Crisis. I have been looking forward to this for a while now and, so far, it's been worth the wait. Tony Daniel's artwork was really kicked into overdrive for this. Bruce's inner monologue was so great and he and Alfred's interactions were a lovely breath of fresh air. Also I noticed that this book mainly contained Bruce, Alfred, and a little bit of Superman sprinkled in at the end. Ever since Final Crisis it's basically been filled with Dick Grayson, Damian Wayne, and Tim Wayne. I really enjoyed this and I loved Bruce's statement about the "super people not understanding that I am just flesh and blood". So cool. Grant Morrison continues kicking ass on Batman and this was perfect timing after the recent issue of Batman and Robin # 13. Everything is flowing so nicely.

UNWRITTEN # 15 - This was another one of those issues in the series where things start to tighten up in the story a lot better. Peter Gross is so great on this book and I wished that he could get an Eisner for his work. The story flowed so well between Lizzie, Tom/Savoy, and the bad ass killer dude. His name just escapes me at the moment and they didn't repeat it in the recent issue. This issue definitely makes me want to sit down and re-read the whole thing from beginning to recent issue to kind of freshen it all back up in my mind. Just, overall, brilliant storytelling and once again Vertigo proves that it is making some of the best mature titles in the business.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 637 - Wow. Joe Kelly nails it. He has written some pretty great issues previous to the Grim Hunt but this just really knocks it out of the park for me. Lots of great story development and character development. Loved the black costume and the transferring of Madame Web's power to Spider-Woman, or Arachne. I, honestly, didn't see that coming at all and it totally blew me away. That big layout that Julie showed Peter as he was about to kill Kraven was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Checchetto knocked it out of the park with his pencils. I see a superstar born on this series. Julie basically shows Peter that if he kills Kraven it could set him up to be one of the most bad ass villains in the Marvel Universe. So, nice! The epilogue with Peter, Arana, and the new Madame Web was so damn touching to me. Kaine got a proper burial and his gravestone said "Kaine Parker" which is what was most touching about it. Loved the interractions between Pete and Arana too. I like how she kind of didn't want to be called Spider-Girl and wanted to keep up with Arana even though Arachne handed down her costume. The Kraven's in the Savage Land was really cool too. Then that epilogue...looks like Kaine will be sticking around...sort of. Heh. Then we got those nice back ups. I'm not really that into the DeMatteis/Fiumara back up because I'm just not that into Fiumara's artwork. I will go back and read that story, however, mainly because of DeMatteis. He's one of my favorite Spider-Man writers. The back up with Lee/Martin is fun. My biggest gripe is that it's only two pages long. It's so frustrating, haha. Martin's artwork is just so beautiful and dynamic I just want to see more and more. So, I guess maybe that's the point of the two pages, heh. Just overall a great story and I hope that this momentum can carry over into OMIT. I'm gonna keep my fingers and toes crossed on that one.
