Bought//Thought March 07 2007.

Sorry to interrupt this praise Darth orgy, but my shop still hasn't got their books yet from Diamond. This is the second time in a couple weeks. So many new people were there trying to get Cap, and all were turned away.

If you hear that Diamond Comic Distributors HQ was blown up, then it was probably by me. :cmad::cmad::cmad:

Wow, I can't believe I forgot this one.

Shazam! and the Monster Society of Evil #2
So...cute...can't...thinks...cuteness...puppies...

Awwwwwwwwwwww.

It's interesting that, while Winick is going on and on about how outdated the Marvels are and how they NEED to be updated to the times (with wars! and prisons! and tattoos! and comas!), the rest of the DCU had been handling the Marvels, well, pretty damn well and utilizing their strengths to the utmost. 52 plays up the Shazam mythology without destroying it. And now this book is playing up all the "kiddy," nice, nostalgic aspects of the Marvels and it works great.

It still reads like Ultimate Captain Marvel with yet another "reboot" of its continuity but hell, there's just so much good (and cute!) that's crammed into here. This is the sort of book you absolutely wouldn't mind your six-year old reading, and yet there's genuine storytelling and emotion and pathos here that is fit for a more mature audience.

And Christ, lil' Mary Marvel needs her own action figure.

Please don't rape her, DiDio:(.

Fantastic Four #543- 45 years of Marvel's first family and its time to celebrate and reflect. This special issue had the main CW fallout story and two backups. So I will review them all separately:

The main story involves a cute scene with Thing and Johnny Storm trying to put Franklin and Valeria to sleep while watching a Dateline-esque retrospective on the history of the Fantastic Four. It was nicely done as they interview people close to the FF even Dr. Doom dropping some knowledge on us fools. Meanwhile, Sue and Reed are out on a romantic evening trying to figure out where their marriage went wrong. We get the obvious ending where Reed and Sue decide to take a break and introduce Black Panther and Storm as replacement members. Apparently, their embassy was blown up and theyre staying to see construction through. McDuffie does an awesome job here and McKone does his best work yet on his final FF issue. This story alone was worth the $3.99 IMO.

The second story was written by Stan "The Man" Lee and was I got to say, hilarious. The artist whose name escapes me does his best Kirby impression and does it effectively. Mike Allred helps out on inks. Its a funny story about a Mole Man invasion and only the FF can stop him, but what? Reed refuses to help, pouting like a little girl because they forgot the FF's 45th Anniversary. So who comes to the rescue? Stan Lee of course. Running into the middle of the invasion force as the FF look on, relieved ( apparently 616 Stan is annoying as hell). Story wraps up, Mole Man gets a cameo in the next FF movie and everyone is happy again. Stan still has some juice left, and no, not that juice.

The final story was by Paul Pope. At first it was jarring, Pope's style really doesn't translate to FF that well, but after getting used to it, I got into the story. It was a pretty standard tale about Johnny and Spider-Man and their rivalry back in the day. Thing pushes Johnny's buttons and literally pushes buttons on his blackberry (weird). Johnny is going to a big race and Spider-Man needs pictures of him flaming up, what better way to do it than to have Spider-Man steal his spotlight and get that Storm temper working. It was fun, but you really need to get used to the art style, and also, these types of stories were a lot better done by Slott in his mini, but this si a solid effort.

Overall, great anniversary issue and a must for all Fantastic Four fans. Here's to another 45 years of the World's Greatest Comic Magazine!

so the new FF is The Human Torch, The Thing, Storm, and The Black Panther?

Well you should, its excellent. It's by far Marvels best book right now. But if you haven't been keeping up with Planet Hulk, maybe its best that you wait for the TPBs.

I read the first 50% of Planet Hulk but I'm gonna buy the whole thing in TPB. I agree, it's awesome.

Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #8- The best mini-series spinning out of Brave New World and just simply, one of the best mini-series out now comes to a satisfying close here. I have to applaud Palmiotti, Gray and Acuna here for a great job resurrecting an old and often forgotten super team that seems to only show up to get pwned. I'm looking at you Johns.

The Freedom Fighters, fighting President Gonzo and his metahuman forces on the White House lawn, an all out battle for the ideals of America, democracy and basic civil rights all hang in the balance here. Monuments are destroyed, phallic symbols included. The Freedom Fighters with their unlikely ally Father Time put things into overdrive and open the eyes of the American people. A patritoic swell of emotion as the people who once feared them, join them in the battle for their country. Essentially what this issue represents is the anti-thesis of Marvel's Civil War as it shows that people aren't dumb, the citizens of America will not be easily fooled and that the ideals that represent America still live on and Uncle Sam needs not a myspace page to fight for his people.

Beautiful art here by Daniel Acuna as he shows off some of his briiliant ability to depict great epic scenes as well as small moments. He is definitely an artist to watch for (Green Lantern #19-20) as this guy is heading for superstar status.

A political story in which fascism and tyranny is faced down and blood is shed and where at the end of the day the good guys always win. You can't ask for more than that. A great ending to a magnificently done mini-series that I can only hope to see more of. Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters, they're the real deal. Captain America may be dead, but Uncle Sam still lives to fight, in a whole different universe.

Couldn't agree more, DP...what a GREAT series.

They need an ongoing.

Sooo, my shop sold out of Cap #25.:csad:
My remaining reviews!
The Incredible Hulk #104: Average
Despite claiming certain things were awesome in Dumb World, I actually do enjoy this book. It's the only book I read not set on earth (save for 52, sometimes) and, I dunno, it's refreshing. However, nothing really happens in this issue at all. The book has been dragging a little as of late, and #104 continues that trend. However, this ish has a purpose; it shows that Hulk is happy, for once. Cool, but I kind of wish that a little more was going on. On the other hand, HULK'S GETTIN' LAID! YEAH! The ending reveals an explosion, set by...you know...someone, I assume. I really didn't get that part. Pak/Pagulyan could've done a better job illustrating the scene.

Justice League of America #6: Good
I really liked this issue a lot. Really! I thought about giving it a "great." I mean, Meltzer has these guys down, character-wise. Plus, even though this book has been moving at an unremarkable pace, it's always enjoyable and I'm of the opinion that the more character stuff Meltzer can cram in, the better, pace be damned. And action! The action is really good. Vixen, a character that I know/care about almost as far as I can throw her, has a really awesome entrance into the fray. Red Tornado gets a sweet action scene, as well. Batman!!! Oh, Batman. Meltzer displays Batman...in the Justice League...correctly! Meaning, Batman isn't on the other members' level, and he just does some useful, Batman-y things. Superman is taking the fight right to Amazo's face, so what does Bats do? He takes a laser cutter and starts going at the legs. Perfect. Attacking while an uber-villain is distracted, and in a sensible manner, to boot. It's like, the only way I can tolerate Bats in the League, so major brownie points to Meltzer.
What knocked this down to merely "good?" Well, I think Meltzer should've dropped at least one narrative voice for this issue. Benes' art is pretty good for this book, you know, big superhero action and all, but his faces are too similar. I don't really notice it from the boys' club, as they all have masks to differentiate themselves; however, Black Canary and Reddy's wife are exactly the same person. Face, hair, body. It kind of sucks. Confusing sometimes, too. I think Grundy b**tched out a little early. I mean, he did some damage to Red Tornado--the arm thing was brutal. But really, should a human in an ambiguously-weakened body (I subtract points for that, too--what's wrong with his body, Meltzer? You never say!) be able to take punches from Solomon fooking Grundy? I don't know. Seems like he got knocked around pretty good and until the arm thing, Grundy didn't seem that threatening. If he just gives a human being a bloody nose from a punch, how is he going to stand up to the entire Justice League?
How was he planning on getting the Amazo body back to put his mind in it, anyway? Didn't it just freak out and leave last issue? If the JLA can't stop it, how would Grundy? And if he can't, why not escape? I don't really get why he was so vindictive towards Red Tornado either. "We did all this...to kill YOU, inoffensive B-lister who's been blown up hundreds of times! We thought killing you would be better than killing, like, Green Lantern or something. You know, because you're the real threat to us."
I guess my problem is that Smart Grundy didn't seem all that smart to me.

NOT BOUGHT BUT STILL THOUGHT...ABOUT.
Dark Tower #2: Good
It's good! Pretty. And good. So...yeah. I think the only thing keeping it from "great" for me right now is that I have no knowledge of the source material, and as such am only reading a story that hasn't really kicked into gear yet. So...I'm expecting good things.

Haven't read Fantastic Four or Mighty Avengers, yet.

BTW why was jones put on probation?

On a Justice League related note, does anyone else think it would be, like, awesome to have sex with Vixen and make her go, like, panther or something. I mean, you know. One of the big cats. You know. The sexy animals. The ones that would be cool to have sex with if they had human brains. Am I right?

Or calling people ******s.

Yeah, sure, why not.

Both crimes equivalent to punching a pregnant woman in the belly. Like, putting your fist straight through her belly and out the other side, with baby goo all over it. And screaming civilians and the collective cry for Superman to help. If only he were real.

I'd have her copy a horse, if you get my drift :cwink:
