Immortal Iron Fist #5

Pretty good issue, a few things bugged me however but more on those later.

Orson and Danny escape HYDRA with Orson managing to acquire a book detailing the history of the Iron Fist. then warns Danny about a tournament where he will have to face other Immortal weapons (which we know is the second arc).

Steel Serpent is meanwhile assembling an army to destroy the two Iron Fists. It's also hinted that Steel Serpent is working under someone else’s command.

Over at RandCorp tower Danny's Jarvis wannabe lawyer Mr. Hogarth is at breaking point after HYRDA kidnapped his mother and threatened to kill her unless he sell RandCorp to them. Desperate to get her back he calls in Luke Cage, Misty Knight and another female who I didn't recognize but I'm sure is a past member of H4H. The issues end with a fun sequence in an elevator between the two Iron Fists before the doors open to reveal Steel Serpent's legion.

As I said a few things irked me such as Danny shrugging off the fact they just murder a bunch of HYDRA goons. Sure, HYDRA was out to kill them and it wasn't directly Danny who did kill them but it still bugs me somewhat. Also some of the dialogue gets a tad confusing during Orson’s talk about the Iron Fist legacy.

On the upside both artists continue to impress, especially Foreman who sadly only gets a triply flashback sequence at the beginning.

Amazing Spider-Man #540

Solid issue but nothing really spectacular, the whole “Spidey wants vengeance so he talks all badass” routine is starting to get a tad grating. How many times will Spidey say something a long the lines of “I’ll break you’re bones…, “What do you think l’ll do to you” before the arc is over, is anybodies guess.

After checking on May’s status Peter continues his crusade to find her shooter, tracking down the man who provided him with the scope for the sniper riffle. After he refuses to tell Peter whom he sold the scope to, Peter throws him out the window but stops him with a webline to his feet at the last minute. This would of kind of struck me as odd because, Peter knows fully well the danger of stopping someone falling *COUGH*, *COUGH* Gwen Stacy *COUGH*, but given the circumstances and the whole “I don’t care if anyone dies” attitude it works. Evensionally he tells Peter where the shooter is hiding out. After a brief exchange with the apartment manger (JMS inject a little humor here, which is welcome) Spidey heads out to the train station where during a confrontation with the shooter, he’s shot.

Spidey follows the shooter to hospital; incidentally the same one May is fighting for her life in. When the shooter’s shooter arrives to check if he finished the job. Peter follows him outside and utilizing the whole unmasking issue rather well, Peter just casually walks over to the shooter’s shooter, webs up his mouth and grabs the phones and discovers that Kingpin ordered the hit.

New "Bendis will ban you from his forum if you reveal who Ronin is 12 hours early, even though it was obvious from the get go" Avengers #30 and Nova #2 next...

I hope the next arcs in IF aren't too long. That contest Danny has to enter sounds cool.

I take it Parker getting down with his bad self doesn't do it for you?

New X-Men #38

The preceding "Mercury Rising" arc focussed mainly on just two characters, so for a follow-up Kyle and Yost bring us a five-part (counting the prologue that laid down Magik's history) "Quest for Magik" arc, which features almost the entire Xavier Institute. Last issue, a spectacularly unhelpful Blindfold related the tale of Illyana Rasputin to various students at the Xavier Institute, shortly before the floor collapsed and an army of Limbo demons invaded at the behest of Belasco. This issue sees the leaders of the New X-Men cut off from the rest of the class, now in two groups: one, including X-23, Mercury, Dust, Elixir, Armour and David, who are in Belasco's hands (he's also captured and neutralized the entire Astonishing team); the second, with Blindfold, Rockslide, Anole, Pixie, Match, and various others, who are stranded elsewhere in Limbo, who are found by Illyana herself. Belasco demands that the New X-Men tell him where Illyana is, since they encountered her in the "House of M" crossover, which they don't remember, obviously; in response, he rips out David's heart. Ouch. Elsewhere, any army of demons attack the other group, severing Anole's arm and blowing up Rockslide (which happens all the time; he can be put back together). Since this issue's opening establishes that Elixir, having downloaded Beast's knowledge via the Cuckoos, is now incredibly adept at using his biomanipulation powers (he fixes David's eyesight), my guess is that Elixir will resurrect David, demonstrating how powerful (and morally ambiguous) his power is now. He could easily regrow Anole's arm as well, but my guess is that it will be revealed that Anole, lizard-like as he is, can regenerate his limbs. 8/10.

I loved that scene. Peter is a nerd at heart. A nerd with pride who thinks he's on top of the world is going to do some pretty stupid things. I thought it made sense.

I loathed, LOATHED, HATED, vomited at the bar scene/dance number. Wtf.

Yep, I'm with you on that one, although I did like the bar scene. I thought the close up on Peter's mouth when he said whatever it was he said was hilarious.

I liked that Peter is such a big hearted nerd that even when he's bonded with an evil symbiote, he sucks at being bad. It's still nerdy.

I thought it was hysterical. Great humor moment to break up a lot of grim ones.

And he IS a nerd. If he had turned ultra cool in moments, it would have been truly lame rather than funny lame.

I loved the movie. Better than 1, not better than 2.

And Countdown was absolutely awesome.

And I'm glad to see Magik back in New X-Men.
