Disney is going to come and save the day again for the next month between Toy Story 4, Spider-Man: Far From Home (half of it, at least), and The Lion King. But yeah, so far this has been a horrible June for the box office. Yeesh.

It's been an underwhelming month for summer movies

Godzilla KOM
Dark Phoenix
Men in Black International
Soon to be Shaft

I expect Marvel and Disney's "Spider-man Far from home" to obviously pick things up

It's funny that Samuel L Jackson and Chris Hemsworth can go from one 2 billion dollar hit to lower movies that only pull in 8 million and 100 million

Yikes. What a terrible Summer it’s been. Toy Story 4 should probably start to pick things up.

Box office gross of all the movies in top 10 except Spiderman has included international gross through July 21st (FFH's international gross is only updated to July 14th). Its gross isn't enough to surpass Aladdin so the ranking is still correct but the number isn't quite accurate.

I know and i updated it.

2019 is really the year of Disney. 2018 was their year but this year, no studio can come close. Spidey is under Sony but its a coproduction with Marvel Studios so thats Disney for me as well. The 6 highest grossing of 2019 (worldwide) are all Disney. Who knows if Toy Story 4 will hit 1billion mark but its definitely hitting 930 million. After the top six, its the Chinese film which only performed big in China.... then the rest are below X-Men Apocalypse's worldwide gross!

In North America, the only movies that hit the $200 million are Disney films. I feel like the other four big studios need to step up, because even though I'm happy for Disney for their success, its going to be much interesting if the other studios are also having their gigantic hits and it is going to make the box office competition more interesting to watch. Hobbs & Shaw would perform fine next week, but F8 only earned 226 million in North America, two years ago (wasnt even in the top ten for 2017), and I doubt Hobbs & Shaw would draw more crowd into theaters. And for the rest of the year, its going to be Frozen, Star Wars with It/Jumanji 2 as the only non Disney movies and I think those films wouldn't be as big as their precedessor. Personally I have zero interest in watching Jumanji.

I just looked at the top grossing movies after this weekends estimates were released and it is all Disney/Marvel! It’s not even close. Crazy.

Billion Dollar Disney Movies in 2019:
Captain Marvel
Endgame
Aladdin
Homecoming (Technically a Sony release)
The Lion King

Toy Story 4 should be able to make it there as well. They still have Frozen 2 and IX to come. Ridiculous.

They own entertainment right now.

As much as I enjoy most of the content put out by Disney, I think this level of domination (that is slowly but surely turning into some kind of monopoly of the mega blockbuster market) is worrisome for the industry at large.
They’ve been sucking the air out of every other spring/summer release and the only movie breaking out that trend is a Disney movie in disguise (Far From Home). This is clearly not healthy.
The other majors (mainly WB, Universal and Columbia now) are going to have to step up their game in a major way if they don’t want every year to look like this one from here on out. That means a top to bottom review of their blockbuster strategy because almost everything they put out this year has been abysmal and performed accordingly at the box office.

It won’t be like this for good. You can only redo all time classics like Lion King and Aladdin so many times. The MCU could keep going strong but Star Wars will struggle to put out one film a year. There’s plenty of room when the others get their act together. They are underachieving due to themselves, not because of Disney.

OTOH, the main reason they have been dominating the blockbuster market, is because they have consistently produced good material while the competition has not. I'm not sure how exactly that is supposed to be a "fixable" problem. "Disney, you need to make your movies lower quality and less appealing"? Its not like they have been sabotaging their competitors.

Annapurna Pictures Exploring Bankruptcy

Eight years after its launch, Annapurna Pictures has retained a law firm to explore bankruptcy protection, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

The company, founded in 2011 by Megan Ellison, had evolved over the years from a production-finance entity to include a full-scale distribution arm whose films included Vice and Sorry to Bother You. But rumors of Annapurna's imminent demise have persisted for the past year. Ellison's company was said to have lost so much money — thanks to a string of soft box office performers, including The Sisters Brothersand Destroyer — that it could no longer sustain the hemorrhaging.

"The Ellison family is in negotiations to restructure their deals with the banks. They remain in full support of the company and are dedicated to Annapurna’s future," an Annapurna spokesperson says. Megan Ellison is the daughter of Oracle Corporation billionaire Larry Ellison. Her brother, David, founded Skydance Media, which produces the Terminator sequels and is behind the forthcoming Tom Cruise starrer Top Gun: Maverick, among other titles.
