Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Who gives a **** how much it cost, or how much it makes at the box office ? I sure as hell don't. Just give me a good FF movie, better then the 2nd one, and I'll be happy.

You obviously sure as hell do since you talk about it so much. And your talk of Harry Potter and Transformers to draw away from Silver Surfer's disappointing business.

And you want to know who cares? The studio execs. who pay for these things and say if they get made or not and for how much. That's who. The people who ultimately allow the films to get made.

I wounder how long it will be before they try to make a Power Rangers movie ? How about another Power Puffs movie ? Mabey a Smurf movie ? I'm sure the suscess of TF's is giving studio execs all kinds of nutty ideas. Beating ? I don't think so.

Is it not so hard to admit to the obvious? Fantastic Four 2 = disappointment. Transformers = overwhelming success. Disappointment vs. overwhelming success = beating.

I like Transformers and I like Fantastic Four. My favorite is Spiderman, and I have absolutely no problems whatsoever saying I thought the third one was a piece of dog turd and I wished it would've failed miserably at the B.O. It's just so funny to me how you attempt to trivialize Transformers as being a "kid's toy" movie in the face of your beloved "kid's comic book" taking a verbal beating. Lets just go ahead and speak the obvious - Fantastic Four was created and targeted at the EXACT SAME DEMOGRAPHY as Transformers. If you don't believe or realize that, then please stop using my bong when I'm not looking.

If you don't like Transformers then that's totally fine, but everytime you bash it for being nothing more than a kiddie toy franchise brought to life, you might as well dip your head in searing hot water for liking the Fantastic Four. Both were created with the same purpose and both have since developed and expanded their audiences.

Everyone agrees with that statement!

Everyone except everyone who fronts the bills!

And Carp Man.

OK, I'm not being a hypocrit because I didn't really like the Transformers movie. Really didn't. I'm a big Transformers fan as well.

But every criticism here that Carp Man has levied against it can basically be applied to Rise of the Silver Surfer as well.

So to me, I think he obviously does care about how much the movie makes despite his claims otherwise. And he seems rather bitter about another property making more money than his favorite property.

I love that the Harry Potter movies are so successful. Why? Because the movies basically fly in the face of what most studios think summer blockbusters should be.

No big stars. Over 2 hours. Dark, gritty, and intense. No stupid pandering to the LCD. No overt gratuitous product placement, toy selling, or commercialism.

I can agree with everything you are saying EXCEPT....what were those 2 rows of toys I saw at Target yesterday.....looked like a butt load of toys to me....

I'm referring to the content of the movie. You think I honestly believe that there aren't Harry Potter toys and merchandise?

I ****ing know that. But the movie itself wasn't some giant toy or merchandise commercial like say Fantastic Four and Transformers.

There wasn't crap like, Mad Eye Moody giving Harry a broom. Harry finding some logo on the broom and asking Moody, "Hemme?!" Moody, "Of course."

Chill, I was just making an observation............lol

Then you do agree with everything I am saying. No exceptions ;) .

Now I do, but the way that you stated it before.....noooooo....:o you did not make yourself clear....you just said no "toy selling" no explanation that something should be read into that statement.....:word:

Hmm . . . I'm seeing a trend here with 20th Century Fox.

And yes, Powers Rangers got a movie in 1995, and a sequel in 1998. Both were released theatrically.

And from the bottom of my heart, I still think you are an over-obsessed Alba stalker. Cheers :D .

It's hilarious how moderator titles have just been given away lately though around here.

Yeah........:word:

The only "bombs" this summer were Bruce Almighty, Nancy Drew and Surf's Up. Of course Bruce Almighty was doomed from the start. There was no way it was going to make back the 175 million it took to produce.

FF2's performance was average, perhaps below average, but by no means was it a bomb.

Evan Almighty. Bruce Almighty was a big hit in 2003.

Note that I never called the movie a bomb. A disappointment, very much so.

Daredevil wasn't a bomb either, but it's still not getting a sequel. Fans might have to face facts that Fox might not rush a sequel in two years now. It could be a lot longer.

Let's not forget about Hostel 2. It didn't even make it one month in theatres.

Yup, good point. 28 Weeks Later, with respects to 28 Days Later.
Felt like it was in and out of theatres.

And Captivity. Though I'm not sure what kind of budget it had. The marketing budget probably cost quite a bit though.

Nancy Drew and Hostel II are low budget films hoping to catch on as counter-programming sleeper hits. They didn't, but their production, marketing, and distribution costs are low enough that they'll turn a profit from home entertainment revenue. So no harm, no foul really. Captivity is low budget, but has done so poorly that it might actually lose money, but probably not too much. Evan Almighty is the only serious lemon of the summer so far, due to the crazy amount of money Universal spent on it. If they'd kept it to the more regular $ 50-70 million budget that an upper-end comedy usually has it would've been a hit.

Just to note, look how accurate the voters in the first two poll selections ended up being.

Quite honestly, I'm shocked that Hunter Rider's voting gave it such a high gross. And that a1ant and myself voted the same.

That’s crap. My local supermarket had a Harry Potter DVD stand right in the aisle by the entry (the box set of all four films for £18), then a shelf of toys and prroducts with a stand in front of it with a woman selling/offering something (didn’t stop to find out what it was... some sort of food product tied into the movie, or book ordering, or something).

Fantastic Four could have done with more marketing and merchandising. Harry Potter has a much wider audience built up through the books.

PoTC also laid on the merchandising heavily - toys everywhere, masks, outfits, models.

Poor marketing was definitely a factor in the disappointing performance of FF2.

Not necessarily. Studios spend on marketing according on their presumed incomes. You obviously spend on a movie that's supposed to make 300 million like HP or POTC more money than on one that won't make more than 150 million.
