Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

TMNT barely made a peep at the box office and yet the odds of a sequel are in their favor.

Granted different studios in charge but still, i'm pretty confident that we will see another F4 movie.

FF2 is done guys. :csad:
Even if the O.W. of Ratatouille is not great, it will have fantastic legs, but the saddest thing is that FF2 is going to be destroyed by Transformers.
I saw it on Thursdray, and, believe me, it is simply incredible, IMO it will be definitely the blockbuster of the Summer.

If the movie don't cross the 140m mark, thanks to the international box office and the other revenues, at FOX they still have a profitable movie (but far less than the first one), but they could think that the FF2 budget is too high.
This is the main problem: do you think that it is possible to do a good sequel (with better action, better sfxs) with less than $130m?

Of course it is - decent scripting, less interference from the studio, and get a director who can squeeze every last cent out of the budget and put it on the screen - oh, and good cinematography - that can make a film look 100 million dollars better. The fact that Fox spent oodles on WETA, who despite being a great VFX team didn't make the film look any better than equally good VFX shops such as CAFE FX (who did the Caprisun ads and a lot of SIN CITY, for example), means they were more interested in publicity clout rather than quality. The VFX weren't great - they could have been a great deal better.

Also, they have a cast that shouldn't cost half the budget, and the only big name they had was Mr. Fishburne, who did ... what ... ten lines in the film, and didn't even appear? And I bet he cost a pretty penny into the bargain.

$130 million is a decent budget - it was just wasted with pointless expense.

Done ? Done ? It has 23 more markets to open in. 14 of them in August. Japan in September. It's far from "done". It's got 165 WW allready. That's half of what the 1st one made WW.

Oh and by the way...FF3 is on the way!

Common sense would tell you that though. :)
From Moviehole ?That site has been pretty wrong in the past with their scoops from 'insiders'. Let's wait until one of the producers or Fox says something before celebrating.

Yeah i think it's going to do great at the box office as well.

Lets take a look at the latest, shall we ?

EARLY FRIDAY & 3-DAY ESTIMATES: 'Ratatouille' with only the 6th-best Pixar opening w/$16.5M Fri - $48.5M 3-day; 'Die Hard 4' w/$29M 3-day and $44M 5-day; 'Sicko' strong, but not 'Fahrenheit 9/11' numbers

by Steve Mason

Pixar has returned to the top of the box office, but their little rat named Remy doesn’t have nearly the box office juice of Buzz Lightyear, Nemo, Mr. Incredible or Lightning McQueen.

Ratatouille (Buena Vista) has grabbed an estimated $16.5M on Friday, which should translate to $48.5M for the 3-day weekend. Those are excellent numbers for most companies, but Pixar is not most companies. The previous 7 Pixar films have set the bar very high, both artistically and commercially. By all accounts, this is an artistic triumph with a 91% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes and 91% positive reviews at MetaCritic, but as I wrote in my Thursday tracking column, selling and marketing this picture has been an uphill battle.

If the $48.5M number holds, Ratatouille will be only the 6th-best opening for a Pixar movie, and the softest since 1998’s A Bug’s Life. It’s a testament to Disney and the quality of the film that despite the relatively soft opening, every studio executive that I’ve spoken to still believes that this movie can get to $150M+ domestic. Even in this summer, where almost no movie outside of Knocked Up (Universal) has legs, I still believe that $200M is a possibility.

Live Free or Die Hard (Fox) has managed to improve upon it’s $9.1M opening day with an estimated $9.25M on Friday. John McClane appears headed for a $29M 3-day, and DH4 will have a likely 5-day of $44M. That’s easily the best weekend opening of the Die Hard franchise.

EXCLUSIVE FANTASY MOGULS EARLY 3-DAY ESTIMATES
1. Ratatouille (Buena Vista) - $48.5M [$48.5M cume]
2. Live Free or Die Hard (Fox) - $29M [$44M cume]
3. Evan Almighty (Universal) - $15.2M – down 51% [$60.7M cume]
4. 1408 (MGM/Weinstein) - $11.2M – down 46% [$40.9M cume]
5. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox) - $9M – down 55%[$114.8M cume]

Once the fanboys get their fill it will tank. It has no appeal to anyone else. HP will do a # on the robots. 9 days it has to make it, and it will. The fanboys will see to that. After that it is a crapshoot.

I have a strong feeling you're about to be proven wrong carp.:o It's not just TF fanboys that are (and will be) gushing about this movie.

THE word is W R O N G......................W R O N G

W R O N G

TMNT barely made a peep at the box office and yet the odds of a sequel are in their favor.
When it comes to getting a sequel, it's not the size of the gross that matters; it's the ratio between the gross and the budget. It's no surprise that TMNT is looking good to get a sequel. It grossed $ 92.247 mil worldwide against a $ 34 mil production budget. That's a ratio of 2.71 - enough to make a sequel a strong likelihood.

Showbiz Data has their Friday estimates up:

1. Ratatouille - $ 16.395 mil
2. Die Hard 4 - $ 10.495 mil
3. Evan Almighty - $ 5.023 mil
4. 1408 - $ 3.676 mil
5. FF 2 - $ 2.695 mil

If those numbers are close to the actuals, Ratatouille should gross around $ 50-53 million this weekend. Die Hard 4 looks to score a strong increase to a 3-day in the low 30s. It should have a five day take in the high 40s. FF 2 is looking at a likely range of $ 8.7 to 9.1 mil depending on how good its Saturday and Sunday numbers are.

As for the Moviehole report - there may well be an FF 3. If I had to bet one way or the other, I'd bet that there will be, but Moviehole isn't a reliable enough site to talk about a sequel as a done deal based on a report from them.

2.7 is a good number, and around the range where it should make the 9 - 9.5 mill it was projected for the weekend.

I'm not comparing this to the first one anymore because we know it will fall short, but comparing it to Hulk, it only made 2.1 million on it's 3rd Friday.

It should get a bit of a boost tomorrow, I'm guessing 3.3 mill or so for Saturday and 2.8 or so for Sunday. Considering the new competition, those are good numbers.

If FF2 does $135-140m in the US and crosses the 300m mark ww, it can be considered a success. If they are planning a sequel without increasing the budget, FF3 could be considered a lock.

Reguarding Transformers, don't understimate it. IMO it can be the surprise of the year and the new ID4. I wouldn't bet on the fact that HP will beat it.

^^ Honestly from what little I have seen of Transformers it looks pretty good.

However Michael Bay movies tends to feel a lot like Fox movies, they always leave you feeling a little cheated but the action looks awsome.

And news of an FF4 sequel is not that big of a surprise but I think that they should use the F4 more prominently in marketing.

They keep saying about what worked but they should also pay greater attention to what did not, that is what has everyone pulling their hair out, the fact that Fox does not seem to be learning.

It is not hard to understand what the corporate culture up there must be like.

No wonder they keep such tight reigns on the talent. They must think that they are the drivers and the talent are just hacks.....sigh.

I hope Transformers is good, because I feel very connected to them, since they were created durring us generation X'ers childhood.

I am skeptical about it being a Michael Bay movie. I remember when the Island came out which was a great film in concept, but totally flawed in it's execution.

I am going to Transformers on Monday. I hope it is the first Bay movie I enjoy.

I loved The Island. Great flick. No flaws that made the film unenjoyable.

Although I think Transformers is going to be way bigger than I thought at the first part of this year, I still don't think it's going to make 300mil in the U.S. There have never been 4 300 million dollar movies in one year, I would be shocked if this year is any different. I think the movie will have a huge opening but I don't think most women will be interested, I think that will kill it's chances of doing the numbers the fanboys want. I'm thinking 260mil is the roof for the movie because of the lady's and Potter 8000. I'm predicting 240mil right now, if it's legs aren't terrible.

I realize Transformers is getting alot of buzz....I've witnessed it from others around me in the theater as the trailer rolled, I've heard others tell me of their anticipation of the film. I myself grew up in the era of the original Transformers and collected the comics as a novelty (back then anything that came out as a first issue I scooped up - it was a time when everyone was suddenly aware of the worth of comic books) but I just can't see much substance in this movie. I was a little older than the target audience when this all happened, but I gotta say,....I don't get it. Things that fold into other shapes. Giant metal robotic origami. I don't doubt the movie will do well at first. But I still don't get it.
