Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Well, SM3 has done very well even though it didn't go beyond 900. I would love for HP to go beyond 900, it really deserves it, it was one of the best movies of the summer.

It has $ 210 more to go. I just don't know. This weekend was $ 17. A 47.5 % drop.

Well, it could be a long shot but you never know, I would hope it could do it...but I'd be happy if it hit 850 million.

Ratatouille didn't make as much as it should have because of competition.

Well I thought for sure that even though FF didn't do as well as we all hoped, that it would probably be Fox top domestic hit of the year, but now it looks like both Die Hard and The Simpsons will pass it.

I was really shoked at how well the Simpsons did. Normally these big screen versions of Adult oriented cartoon shows never do very well (see South Park - bigger, longer, uncut, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters).

If Fox does greenlight a 3rd film you can bet there will be major budget restrictions and I doubt it will be a summer release.

'Simpsons' Leaps to Big Screen Success

Cashing in on 18 years of pop cultural prominence, The Simpsons Movie
drew a stellar estimated $71.9 million on approximately 5,500 screens at 3,922 theaters over the weekend. The $75 million animated feature helped propel the weekend to the highest attendance on record for the final frame of July.

The Simpsons Movie snared the biggest debut ever for a television adaptation, eclipsing Mission: Impossible II, and it more than doubled the previous top opening for a television cartoon adaptation, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and will soon surpass The Rugrats Movie as that category's highest grosser. The Simpsons's start also ranks third among animation overall and fifth for the month of July.

While the television series is still a steady performer in its 18th season, it is no longer among the most popular programs. Viewership was 8.6 million on average this past season, according to Nielsen Media Research, which means that more people may have paid to see the movie over the weekend than those who watch a first run episode.

The movie's success depended on former and casual fans returning to the fold, and the fact that it was the Simpsons in their first movie apparently was enough. After all, the prospect of a movie has been buzzed about for a decade, and distributor 20th Century Fox's ubiquitous marketing campaign offered no compelling reason other than that it was the Simpsons in a movie. The advertising maintained the franchise's brand of manic parody and random humor, from trailers pitching it as ugly two-dimensional animation in the age of 3-D to converting 7-Eleven convenience stores into the "Qwik-E-Marts" from the show.

"I think we did a great job courting the family audience and catching fantastic reviews," said Chris Aronson, Fox's senior vice president general sales manager, who claimed the studio expected an opening in the $40 million range. "It's a multi-generational appeal picture. You have people who started watching 18 years ago. They may not watch the show anymore, but the Simpsons are beloved."

Last weekend's comedy debuts, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Hairspray, each fell around 44 percent. Chuck and Larry held slightly better than Adam Sandler's last three major comedies, grossing an estimated $19.1 million for $71.6 million in ten days. There's less to compare Hairspray to as most recent musical successes had platform releases, but it's drop was similar to Moulin Rouge!. Hairspray scored an estimated $15.6 million for $59.3 million in ten days.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix posted another series low weekend gross, an estimated $17.1 million, but with potent summer weekdays it's accumulated more than its predecessors through the same point, $241.8 million in 19 days. It's the fifth highest-grossing picture of the season behind Transformers, which is now tracking ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End but slightly behind Shrek the Third
with $284.6 million in 27 days. The robo-spectacle generated an estimated $11.5 million over the weekend, off 44 percent.

Live Free or Die Hard enjoyed the strongest hold among wide releases, down 25 percent to an estimated $5.4 million. Demonstrating better staying power than expected, the action sequel could exceed the attendance level of the original Die Hard.

That is crazy, I mean I love the Simpsons, but I'm waiting for it to go to the 1.50 theaters or DVD. Who would have guessed?

I'm not a Simpson's fan by any means, but there is no way that an iconic show like this was going to make what most animated movies make. It's in a class by itself IMO.

3rd biggest opening for an animated film and a bigger opening than any Pixar film.:wow:

Right now it is 5th on the alltime TV Animation Adaptation. Rug Rats is 1st AT $ 100.5 dom Pokemon:The First Movie is 1st WW with $ 163.6. It's 51st on the animation list. If it hits $ 200 million dom, it will be 11th on the list behind Aladdin, Cars, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., The Incrediables, Shrek, Shrek 3, The Lion King, Finding Nemo, and Shrek 2.

I'm talking about TV to Big Screen, so the only 2 up there that I would compare it with are Rug Rats and Pokemon...

I'm not saying it won't hit $200, but man I'd just be really, really surprised. Amazing opening, but I just think it's heavily front loaded.

Tv to big screen ? 2 Rugrat movies, Pokemon, and SpongBob Square Pants. They are the 4 in front of TSM. How about Gumby:The Movie ?

Simpsons just opened Carp...its called speculation, you know that thing that you like to do so much?

The Simpsons was awesome, though. Doesn't shock me it did that well.

Why are we even having this dopey discussion ? D'Oh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is it any dopier than your multiple pages of fighting over how HP was going to beat Transformers domestically...

Honestly, I have no clue why I ever have a discussion with you on any topic....

It still may. That remains to be seen. Hey, it's all fun and games, and it's all good. If this thread were just about FF 2 box office, it would have been dead long ago, and we'd all be sitting here with our thumbs up our *****, but it has been kept alive, by bringing other elements into play. When these boards get dull, I liven them up, by throwing a stick of C4, with a blasting cap on it in here. :woot:

I was a bit surprised. I thought 50 tops. Even Fox was saying 40. 40 would have been very good. 72 is out of sight.

I thought it was going to do high 50's to low 60's.

People love the Simpsons.

Are you sure? Incredibles and Finding Nemo opened pretty big, over 70 million each. But Im shocked at the Simpson's sucess...like 'Shrek 2 box office sucess' shocked...except a few notches down :O
But yeah, I thought it would open like 20-24 million dollars...over the weekend, silly me huh? :o

BTW Harry Potter is a foreign market BEAST!! :wow:

I love the Simpsons too, but there's no precedent for a TV to big screen animated film like this.

I was initially thinking the film would make 80 million domestically tops. Now it could very well be Fox no. 1 film of the year. No one could have predicted that, you may have hoped for that, but no one actually believed it was going to happen.

Yes it was a bigger opening than any Pixar film. Both Incredibles and Finding Nemo came in at just around 70 million, where the Simpsons was at 71 million.

You win the prize. Shrek 2 opened at $ 108. Shrek 3 $ 121.6. Thats it. So it is 3rd in opening weekends.

HP is ahead of the other 4 HP films for same # of days 19

HP $ 195.8 Ended $ 249.5
HP 2 $ 202.1 Ended $ 261.9
HP 3 $ 222.3 Ended $ 317.5
HP 4 $ 231.5 Ended $ 290.0
HP 5 $ 241.7 Ended ???????

:wow:

It's $ 19.5 ahead of HP 3. HP 3 did not hit 241 till day 26, and ended with $ 976.4 WW. So will HP 5 beat TF's dom ? We'll see.
