To celebrate Avengers record breaking opening weekend I've decided to look back to see what happened the same weekend in previous years.

Weekend of week 18:

1962:

It was the second weekend at the top spot for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, making $1,6 million over the weekend.

1967:

Welcome to Hard Times debuted as number one with $2,8 million.

1972:

It was the seventh weekend as number one for The Godfather, adding $4,4 million over the weekend.

1977:

Annie Hall was number one for the third weekend, making $3,9 million.

1982:

It was also the seventh weekend at the top spot for Porky's, which made $4,3 million over the weekend.

1987:

Fourth weekend as number one for The Secret of My Success, adding $4,6 million to its gross.

1992:

In its seventh weekend Basic Instinct was clinging to the number one spot with $4 million. Although it was only its fourth weekend as number one.

1997:

Breakdown debuted with $12,3 million, while Austin Powers debuted as number two with $9,5 million

2002:

Spider-Man kicked off summer season with a new opening weekend record. $114,8 million.

2007:

Spider-Man 3 kicked off summer season with a new opening weekend record. $151,1 million. Talk about déjà vu.
 
Weekend of week 19:

1962:

It was the third weekend at the top spot for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, making $1,5 million over the weekend.

1967:

For a Few Dollars More entered as number one with $3 million

1972:

Play It Again, Sam entered at top with $4,9 million

1977:

The Car was number one with $3,5 million

1982:

Eighth, and final, weekend at the top spot for Porky's, which made $3,4 million over the weekend.

1987:

Fifth, and final, weekend as number one for The Secret of My Success, adding $3,8 million to its gross.

1992:

Basic Instinct still number one, making pretty much exactly as much as last weekend, $4 million

1997:

The Fifth Element was number one with $17 million

2002:

Spider-Man held on to the top spot with $71,4 million, an impressive small drop of only around 38%

2007:

Spider-Man 3 also held on to the top spot, but showing much weaker legs than the first Spidey-movie, adding $58,2 million over the weekend
 
Weekend of week 20:

1962:

Bon Voyage! was number one with $1,7 million

1967:

Don't Look Back was number one with $2,4 million

1972:

In its ninth weekend The Godfather returned to the number one spot with $4,7 million

1977:

The Car was number one for the second weekend with $2,2 million

1982:

Summer kicked off with Conan the Barbarian bringing with it a new opening weekend record for an R-rated movie: $9,6 million

1987:

Ishtar was number one with $4,3 million

1992:

Lethal Weapon 3 arrived with yet another OW-record for an R-rated movie: $33,2 million

1997:

Second weekend at top for The Fifth Element with $11,4 million

2002:

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones ended Spider-Mans reign with $80 million. Good, but not impressive after Spidey's record-breaking weekend two weeks earlier

2007:

Shrek the Third entered the chart with a new record for an animated movie: $121,6 million


Weekend of week 21:


1962:


Lonely Are the Brave was number one with $1 million


1967:


The War Wagon was number one with $2,5 million


1972:


The Godfather remained at the number one spot with $3,5 million


1977:


Star Wars arrived with $7,2 million, a new OW-record


1982:


Second weekend at the top for Conan the Barbarian with $6,9 million


1987:


Beverly Hills Cop II started the summer season with a new record for an R-rated movie: $33 million over the four-day weekend


1992:


Lethal Weapon 3 was still number one with $27,6 million over the four-day weekend


1997:


The Lost World: Jurassic Park opened with a new OW-record: $72,1 million ($90,2 million for four days). A record that would last for four and a half years.


2002:


Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones remaind at top with $47,9 million ($60 million for four days)


2007:


"Summer of threequels" continued, with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End entering the chart with $114,7 million ($139,8 million for four days)
