BOX-OFFICE potential in the Multiverse of Madness

Will it gross more than a billion dollars worldwide?

Agree 100%. Unless something really drastic happens I don't see any scenario where this doesn't do at least $1 billion worldwide, even without a China release.

People are hungry for normalcy. Add in the coveted summer kick-off box office date and its status as a direct follow up to NWH, and this thing becomes a monster.

I'm not arguing that Jurassic Park and Lightyear won't also be huge. But if MoM can't capitalize on everything it has going for it, all movies are in trouble...
A bit of sun around MoM launch time will help with that I reckon. Really hoping it’s very popular with fans and the GA alike and can build on the success of NWH.

If this doesn't get a China release then I'm not expecting a billion. Could be wrong but idk

I think it doesn't get a China release, but does make 1B. As you rightly say, I could be wrong, but here's my take on it. NWH created a widespread raising of the profile for DS; as did IW and Endgame. People obviously LOVED NWH and I think there will be a carry over effect and people will want to see the continuation. Marvel was very, very shrewd with the NWH storyline and made it fit with what was really the kickoff of their new phase. I know it wasn't the first movie out, but BW, Eternals, and SC were essentially the pre-game show.

Love your Avy, BTW. That dude is a trip.

I want this to make over a billion but I'm not confident about it. I thought The Batman could crack a million but didn't, and Strange doesn't have Spider-man popularity even with Scarlet Witch added to the mix. Hopefully I'm wrong and it does.

If the domestic numbers @Silver Surfer posted are in any way accurate, half the job will be done by domestic leaving an easier workload for overseas to make up the rest. Do we know if this is getting a China release?

Very few characters do have Spider-Man levels popularity. There are a lot of characters that have grossed over 1 billion at the box office that aren’t as popular as Spider-Man. Doctor Strange, however, has very high profile and the role he played in the last Spider-Man movie will give this a big boost in my opinion

Yep. We’ve seen peak Spidey could be a $2B character with China thrown in, but MCU well-received solo films can do a billion outside of a pandemic (probably still need China in most cases though).

Mendelson (box-office analyst) is predicting around 350m domestically for DS2.
Which would keep it under 1B worldwide. Opening weekend is less than what people were projecting.

I've spoken to a number of people from the "general public" that think of this movie as a sequel to No Way Home... (They're gonna be disappointed if no Spider-Man shows up, but anywho...), that'll probably have a positive impact on opening weekend numbers.

I'm struggling to see a scenario where MoM doesn't hit $1 billion.

MoM needs to do roughly 60% of NWH's box office to hit $1 billion. Considering its prime box office real estate date, plus the general perception that it's a direct follow up to NWH, it should be able to do $1 billion in its sleep :yay:

If it can't I'm afraid of what that means for the summer 2022 box office as a whole.

*EDIT* to fix date. Batgirl is too dumb to even know which year we're in :D

Just means Spider-Man 1 will remain the highest grossing superhero movie of the summer :D

Doctor Strange Into The Multiverse Of Madness has been officially banned in China.

With all due respect , Mendelson is a moron.
He's been lowballing a lot of films lately and has been trying to be a buzzkiller with just about every major release this year.

Honestly, cinemas around the world arenow coming back to pre pandemic days. And movies like this really attract a big audience. If its on track for 500 million+ in North America, its guaranteed to get 500million from the rest of the world. Marvel Studios doesn't need China's boX office numbers. The doctor's appearance in that No way Home movie is a big selling point.

The boXoffice numbers of this film will be pure madness! Because we are in the multiverse like c'mon now!
