Box office*

$155,538,417 (actuals), finally outgrossed X-Men: Apocalypse.

In comparison to Brave New World

Thunderbolts*
$128,454,195 (domestic tally after 10 days)
$33,100,000 (North America 2nd weekend estimate)
55.5% (North America 2nd weekend drop estimate)
$272,154,195 (global tally after 12 days)

Brave New World
$141,175,831 (domestic tally after 10 days)
$28,170,093 (North America 2nd weekend)
68.3% (North America 2nd weekend drop)
$289.4 (global tally after 12 days)
Thunderbolts*
$155,538,417 (domestic after 17 days)
$16,646,774 (domestic, 3rd weekend)
48.6% (domestic, third weekend drop)

Brave New World
$163,547,486 (domestic after 17 days)
$14,850,888 (domestic, 3rd weekend)
47.3% (domestic, third weekend drop)

Its going to take a while before Thunderbolts* hit the $200 million mark, big if its get there. Mission Impossible and Lilo & Stitch won't help. While Brave New World looks like would end it's run 200 million flat.

Worldwide, I don't see Thunderbolts nearing Brave New World's $415 million. So maybe another $30 million next weekend ($360 million), then $390 million by the end of its world.

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” is currently in fourth place after adding another $2.4 million on Friday, down 42% from its daily total a week ago. The superhero team-up feature has now surpassed a $164 million domestic gross. Though better reviews have helped “Thunderbolts*” hold stronger than its Marvel predecessor, “Captain America: Brave New World,” it’s going to have to push to surpass that film’s $200 million domestic finish.

Mission Impossible will make 12 million less over the 3-day weekend than Thunderbolts* did and barely edge it with a fourth day added. Not a great result still, but considering that in many circles The Final Reckoning was considered to be the movie to watch for Spring 2025, suddenly Thunderbolts* doesn't look too bad...

Not exactly an apples to apples comparison with competition and franchises, but it's certainly a more flattering narrative regardless.

$173,807,728, finally outgrossed Eternals domestically.

$355,507,728, finally outgrossed Fantastic 4 (2005) and X-Men: First Class.

Its gonna need a lot more to hit $200 million domestically and $400 million globally next month.

Damn, such a shame because the movie was good.
This and Brave New World underperforming was expected for me, though I did expect them both to perform a bit worse, like $50 million less in North America.

Now we wait for Fantastic 4, if there's a success story for that at the box office. I am not getting my hopes up.

Big disappointment, but a least the film will last.

So much of the recent output prior to this was just disposable and forgettable.

I liked the aim of the Eternals though and have a soft spot for that film because it had ambition at the very least.

My take here is just because something is good, well reviewed by critics, it doesn't mean the general public would automatically show up and make it a huge success at the box office. The product has to look interesting and appealing first. Not every film is going to blow up like Guardians of the Galaxy.

Can you imagine if this film was actually written for an Avengers 5 movie, same writer/director, same story beats/premise but with the characters that the public really want to see. There would have been a huge difference at the box office.

Here is john's take.

The 3 Reasons Thunderbolts Struggled At The Box Office Despite Audiences Loving It - Open Mic

Here is another interesting take on thunderbolts and why it is not doing better or flopping.
Why thunderbolts flopped?
"Thunderbolts" is struggling at the box office, projected to lose millions, despite a high audience score. This suggests a potential decline in audience trust and interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), rather than just individual weak entries. Some believe the general public isn't as captivated by this new wave of MCU films as they were by Phase 3, which featured more mainstream appeal. Additionally, marketing strategies, including the use of discount days, may be indicating a drop in initial excitement and a willingness to wait for lower ticket prices.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Box Office Performance:
While "Thunderbolts" is currently grossing around $400 million worldwide, it's projected to be at the lower end of MCU box office earnings. This suggests a significant underperformance compared to previous MCU releases.

Erosion of Audience Trust:
The film's struggles could indicate a broader issue with the MCU, potentially due to over-saturation of content, a perceived decline in quality, or a lack of compelling new characters.

Marketing and Ticket Pricing:
Some fans may be waiting for cheaper tickets, suggesting a lack of initial excitement and a willingness to wait for discounts. This could also impact future box office performance.

The Role of Character Appeal:
Some argue that the characters in "Thunderbolts" aren't as compelling or well-known as previous MCU stars, making it difficult for audiences to connect with them and drive them to theaters.

Comparison to Previous MCU Films:
"Thunderbolts" is being compared unfavorably to successful Phase 3 releases like "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," which had broader appeal and successfully boosted the MCU's momentum.

$372,088,406 finally outgrossed Captain America: The First Avenger globally.

$374 million worldwide, finally outgrossed X-Men Origins: Wolverine globally. Its not hitting the $400 million mark at this rate.

Needs about $4 million, to outgross Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in North America. Its not hitting the $200 million mark at this rate.

Wow, lower than Eternals? And that was a 2021 release, too. Not great. Not terrible, but not ideal, either.
Well The Marvels also grossed lower than Eternals. Lower numbers shouldn't be too surprising given that MCU already had a flopped film in 2023.

I think with Thunderbolts' performance, Disney would be reluctant in making film like this and legacy movies again.
