Captain Marvel Brie Larson is Captain Marvel!

I have watched literally 0 films with Brie Larson, but I guess after that announcement I will have to. Can anyone recommend me quality films with her? I guess I will start with Room, as I read it is highly praised.

In terms of showing what Brie Larson can do, I guess that and Short Term 12 are the best options. Though I'd also recommend Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Short Term 12 and Room are her best dramatic roles, but for more comedic stuff definitely check out Scott Pilgrim vs the World and United States of Tara (which is a TV show, but a damn great one that she's a main character in, and it's on Netflix). Girl's got a TON of range - probably more than I've seen from anyone else in her age bracket. She was also quite good in a very different type of role from these others in Tanner Hall with Rooney Mara, and while she didn't get a lot of comedic material in Trainwreck compared to everyone else, she was good in her supporting role there.

how would it be bad storytelling? Quite a few characters debuted elsewhere before their first full appearance. I dont see how having her cameo prior to IW would ruin any narrative that would be told in CM

For one, these movies have their own story to tell, and introducing a completely unrelated character would take time out of the movie to set things up. I mean, why would Carol even be in high school? Is she a teacher now?

GOTG and Thor are in space. So, what is this human doing in space? Does she already have her powers? GOTG has already finished production and a post-credits scene would most likely be as cooky and irrelevant to the MCU as the last one. I don't want Carol to be in Black Panther for the same reason I don't want T'Challa to be in the Captain Marvel movie. These new characters need their own movie. They have their own mythos which needs to be explored.

While other heroes have been introduced in other movies, they've all first showed up in Avengers films first. The only exception was Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and it was never intended for Widow to get her own movie or even get as popular as she is today.

I didnt write that I wanted Carol to be in high school or space; you just mentioned that. Exactly what did Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have to do with TWS? Was Hawkeye needed in Thor? Both served as brief teasers for their characters before they made their first full appearance in the two Avengers films.

Do you really think SM will take place exclusively in HS? No. People speculated that Carol may Rhodey due to their background and I can easily her exiting his room as Tony is about to visit him. They have a small exchange of words and this sets things up as their first meeting, establishing a future working relationship. That would take, what a minute or two? If they keep to the Kree as the origins of her powers, GoTG or Thor would be the perfect place to have the Kree make an appearance in lieu of them potentially playing a bigger role in her solo.

Appearing in any one of the MCU pre-IW does not need to take away from them. We've seen it done effectively before.

She was in Trainwreck? May have to go back and look for that because I either completely forgot that or don't remember her being there.

I'll have to echo what everyone else is saying. Short Term 12 and ROOM are both excellent examples of Brie's talent at handling dramatic roles. Scott Pilgrim, 21 Jump Street, and The United States of Tara show off her comedic ability. She's got the type of range and chameleon like qualities that have allowed her to really slip into almost any time of role and make it work. Later this year we'll get our taste of how she handles action with Kong: Skull Island... Next year we'll get to see her in a crime/thriller with Free Fire.

Eh, I wouldn't suggest watching 21 Jump Street for Larson, she really doesn't do anything noteworthy in it. It's not her fault, mind you.

well she was charming and adorable, and made an impression, which is more than what a lot of actresses could've done with the role

I dunno... Her character's drug fueled rage rant at the dance is pretty damn priceless.

That's true, but her role in the movie is still pretty limited. Not exactly the best showcase of her acting talent.

No one's mentioned Don Jon yet?! I loved her there. :funny:

I completely forgot that movie existed, lol. But yes, her character was great there. She had such a way with words. :cwink:

Also, The Glass Castle has wrapped:

So I'm guessing her red hair's not long for this world. :sly:

The reason that I mentioned high school because that would be a natural and organic way to include Captain Marvel in SMHC. The problem with introducing Carol as a friend of Rhodey, who is a friend of Tony, who knows Peter Parker is that you end up drifting too far from the central focus of the film. While there are tons of awesome characters that could be introduced, time and space for storytelling is needed. Sure, Hawkeye can fit in anywhere as a shield agent and he doesn't have a movie coming up. The sooner Carol is introduced, or more films she's put in before her own movie limits on how Carol would be portrayed in her own film. What if Carol is introduced as a CIA agent in Black Panther who had retired from the Air Force? Well, that means that she couldn't be a fighter pilot in Infinity War as that would mess with continuity. I'm sure Carol could be teased in a post credits scene in one of the upcoming movies before Infinity War, but that's about it.

Great! Now she can make her hair blonde and get ready for Infinity War! :chd:

Hairstyle talk is adorable.
I'd love to see the actress keep her hairstyle as it is playing the role, no change.

Why would one expect her to be utilized as a CIA agent in BP though? You are creating scenarios that write her into a corner instead of a more open introduction that wouldnt have any major contradictions to future appearances. These films arent created in a bubble; they are methodically planned out and something like that would not reasonably happen. If she appears in BP, it would most likely be in a post credit scene, which is what I alluded to by wanting her to cameo before "first full appearance". Post credit scenes are teasers for things to come. She's set to be a big deal. Getting the ball rolling with her before said appearance would be a good idea to give her early exposure

Tony will be in SM so its reasonable that we may get an update on Rhodey there. He was someone close to Tony that was hurt in the last big battle we saw. Same battle which he took Peter under his wing. It would logical to touch on that and Carol as someone with a past connection to Rhodey that is used by the film to give us that update makes sense. Thats something that would not take away from her film nor does it from Spidey's

I only using CIA as an example. The CIA will be in Black Panther according to Photos Nyong'o and Carol has a CIA background in the comics. My point is that depending on how Carol is first introduced in another film, that runs the risk of limiting the creative freedom of the writers and director for the Captain Marvel movie.

Honestly, I don't think well get much of an update on Rhodey. Why would we? This is a Spider-Man film. We don't even know how big of a roll IM will have in the movie. You know, there's a reason why Captain Marvel wasn't introduced in AOU. Marvel isn't going to introduce Carol in a briev, forgettable cameo, you want to introduce her in a big way that heavily ties into the plot. Think of Black Panther in Civil War. There is simply no reason to include Carol in Spider-Man and make her the supporting character of a supporting character. That would do a disservice to her. Introduce her in Infinity War first where she plays a very important role. Marvel isn't going to want to pull a Black Widow with Carol Danvers. Introducing Carol in Spider-Man would give the audience the mistaken impression that she is a supporting character and not a leading Avenger.

Did you misquote?
That seems like a safe assumption, lol.

At any rate, Brie has been blonde in most things and only dyed her hair red for that particular role, so I don't think Mike has anything to worry about. :cwink:

But for the record, I'm totally with him on this one - Carol Danvers has always been blonde and is being played by an actress best known as a blonde anyway, so I see no reason she shouldn't be blonde.

Also, according to IMDB, The Glass Castle was the last pre-Carol role she had lined up, as everything else on her slate has already wrapped production, so...the next few months should be fun. :woot:

Good to know there is nothing to worry about.
Hopefully it stays this way as long as she's attached to this role.

If you were trying to befuddle me Aziz, you have succeeded. :funny:
