Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 2

OK, I know I'm waaaay late to the party, but, I think I became a Wedonite. t:

It started with The Avengers, when I had the most fun at the theater in a looong time! I thought that this was how a Spider-Man movie should be handled!

I also enjoyed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from the beginning, while a lot of posters on these boards complained about it. And of course I really loved it when it crossed over with Cap 2: The Winter Soldier and it was going like gang busters!

Posters told me that if I enjoyed this stuff so much, I should check out Joss Wedon's other projects.

I got Netflix so I could check out Season 6 of Clone Wars. Since I had it, I now had the opportunity to check things out. Since Buffy had the longest run, I figured I check out some shorter things, so I started with Firefly. The beginning took me a while to get a hold of the premise and the characters. But, before I knew it, I was hooked! I loved the characters and all their adventures! It was a crime that it was cancelled! It was smart, a lot of fun, and had characters we cared about.

So, I followed that up with Serenity. Again, really enjoyed it and was totally blindsided by the unexpected death! Really wish we could see more of the 'verse!

Next was Cabin in the Woods. Again, the premise in the beginning was odd to get in the rhythm. But, once it gets really going, it is just so much fun! And it introduced me to Fran Kranz.

Which leads me to...

Dollhouse is extremely underrated.

Oh my gosh, I cannot believe how much I dug this show! It really hit me when I got to the end! Again, I enjoyed the "engagement" of the week in the beginning, but by the time they get to the more serialized portion of season 1 and the Alpha reveal...

I still have to check out Buffy, oddly enough, but in the meantime, I have to see if I can dig up an old thread on Dollhouse around here...

The beginning took me a while to get a hold of the premise and the characters. But, before I knew it, I was hooked! I loved the characters and all their adventures!

Yeah, the Whedon-verse takes a bit of getting used to. He's a particular style that can be mistaken for corny at first glance, which is why a lot of people hate him (or rather, his popularity). After a while, though, you'll find it's very absorbing material.

That pretty much describes my experience with most Whedonverse projects as well, especially Buffy. Whenever you do get around to it, just know that the 1st season will seem extremely dated and cheesy, but it is NOT representative of the whole series (but if you go back and re-watch it after you finish the series, you'll probably appreciate it a little more than you initially did). If you power through, I can assure you there will be a moment somewhere in the 2nd season that hooks you. It does take a while to find its footing, but once it does, it gradually becomes Joss' best work by a mile, imo. Well worth the rather hefty time investment, lol.

Well, I did get hooked fairly quickly on Firefly and Dollhouse (middle of season one), and enjoyed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from the first episode. If Buffy has the Whedon style banter, I'm sure it will carry me until the show hits its stride. And I guess I have to wait for season 3 to see Eliza Dushku.

Well, I did get hooked fairly quickly on Firefly and Dollhouse (middle of season one), and enjoyed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from the first episode. If Buffy has the Whedon style banter, I'm sure it will carry me until the show hits its stride. And I guess I have to wait for season 3 to see Eliza Dushku.

Buffy is pretty much where Joss perfected his Whedon style banter, so I'm sure you'll be satisfied in that regard.

Yep, but her character in the Buffyverse is her best role to date, imo, so the wait should be worth it. And yes, the "Whedon-style" banter was also commonly known as the "Buffy-style" banter, so you won't have to worry about a shortage on that front.

I need to check out Dollhouse on Netflix sometime. I only watched the first few episodes and it just didn't grab me enough to keep on with it. I think it was the timing that killed it for me. Same nights as the final season of BSG. I just didn't have time for that ****.

It's definitely worth watching, at least as far as I'm concerned. Solid cast and even better supporting characters.

Honestly, I feel like the whole show was pretty much disposable until episode 6. Joss even warned people ahead of time about how his original pilot was "too dense" according to network execs, so he had to retool it and delay some elements for 6 episodes to make it more accessible and "case-of-the-week"-like for new viewers to jump on. After that it gets better, and the last few episodes of S1 are really phenomenal. S2 was downright fantastic. Definitely worth it, imo.

Really liked Dollhouse. First few episodes were decent. But episode 4 or 5 for me was when it founds it's way started getting really good.

I really should give it a re-watch. Been a while.

Joss even warned people ahead of time about how his original pilot was "too dense" according to network execs, so he had to retool it and delay some elements for 6 episodes to make it more accessible and "case-of-the-week"-like for new viewers to jump on. After that it gets better, and the last few episodes of S1 are really phenomenal. S2 was downright fantastic. Definitely worth it, imo.

Yeah, the first block of episodes were very bland, paint-by-numbers episodes. There was something interesting about it. If it didn't have Whedon's name behind it, I probably wouldn't have given it a chance.

I feel like Dollhouse is one of those shows that would definitely have benefited from a 12 or 13 episode season. Cut out all the filler, which Dollhouse had a lot of.

Wow. Yeah. Completely forgot. In that case. I hated season 1. If you have a 13 episode season, you can't afford to spend 5 to 6 episodes placating to dummies who can't keep up.

But I suppose that's a sign of the times, really. These days, a show like Dollhouse would get preferential treatment. I'd hope if the show runners got the chance to do it all over again, they'd hit the ground running instead of carefully setting up all of these threads across, what, 8 characters? All of whom had seriously dense back stories and current plots.

Well Joss was trying to please FOX by giving them what they wanted with the first 6 episodes before doing his thing.

I just wish that Joss could get a show on HBO/Starz/Showtime. Or even go back to the CW. I would die for a new Vampire Slayer series.

His Storm/Jean Grey/Emma/Kitty Pride would be sooo great. I wish he would be able to do X-Men films but that will never happen.

I really enjoyed his Astonishing X-Men run... I doubt it will ever see the silver screen, but if it did I'd love for Joss to be involved.

At one time, I would've agreed, but after DOFP, I'd rather not upset the established order.

Out of film continuity TV series would be my jam.

While I'm not sure I'd want to see him go back to the well with familiar characters from the show(s) at this stage, I would really love to see him do something with Fray. That could make for an awesome show, imo.

There are a lot of Slayers now for him to choose from and expand on which is what I would want. Or a Fray series. BTVS is very much like Avatar/LoK where it can go on with new characters forever.
