Can a Batman film ever top The Dark Knight?

I'm not saying it's right but it's the way most people think and that's why I don't think a Spider-Man movie will ever be perceived as better than The Dark Knight.
Lol, who's 'most people'?
You know, I relate much better to a tormented teenage genius rather than a tormented millionaire playboy.

So how much you can relate to a character in a film = quality of film? Just because you relate better to Spider-Man, doesn't make the films the character appears in any better than a Batman film, and vice versa.

bgates87 was making that point, not me. So you should ask him that question to instead.

But if I really had to answer this, I'd say that caring for the characters has a significant impact on your enjoyment of the movie. And that factor alone makes you like a movie more than you would a film with characters towards which you have neutral or even negative feelings.
All quality is subjective.

Ah, I see now, my bad.

No doubt about it. One of the reasons why I dislike "Superman Returns" so much is because I find almost all the characters unlikeable, including sadly the main hero, which makes me really not care what happens to them in the film and therefore makes the movie not enjoyable for me.

I agree that caring for and liking the characters make it a more enjoyable experiance, thats what went wrong with SM3 though. I didn't care for Peter Parker or his plight, because he just came across as a ********. They need to do a much better job writing the next ones to even dream of taking on TDK.

I don't think a Spider-Man movie will ever top The Dark Knight. The appeal of Batman's character is that people can relate to him. He's just a man, he doesn't have super powers. It doesn't really make sense because even though he doesn't have Super Powers he still lives in a fantasy world just like all other Super Heroes, but the absence of super powers sets him apart. People know that Batman could never exist in the real world, but he's still easier to relate to because he's just human.

Spider-Man and other heroes may face all the same emotional issues and struggle to balance their lives as heroes and citizens but at the end of the day Spider-Man can still shoot webs and crawl on walls. I'm not saying it's right but it's the way most people think and that's why I don't think a Spider-Man movie will ever be perceived as better than The Dark Knight.

I disagree. I think it will be hard for any superhero film to top TDK but not because it is easier to relate to Batman than it is to other heroes. Being able to relate to a character does not equal quality of that movie. I think you're more going into the appeal of a character but that doesn't necessarily dictate the potential quality of a movie that character appears in.

Sure, there are two main reasons why I'm liking the Spidey trilogy less an less:
Peter Parker and Mary Jane.
When they are together their characters are disgraceful and unrelatable.
Luckily there were other characters I could care for like Sandman and Harry, so SM3 is still cool with me.
What Raimi needs to focus more on is the kind of melancholy Flint Marko had and less on any kind love story because he's very lousy at them.
All a Spider-Man movie has to have in order to top The Dark Knight is a good solid focused and not to mention original story. It doesn’t matter if it’s dark, it doesn’t matter if it’s epic, it doesn’t matter if it’s loyal to the comic book. All it needs to have is a hell of a story.

Don't worry about the TDK film.<financial is less important than story> You need to worry about whether or not it can top the awesomeness that was Iron-Man. That's the new standard for Marvel now. I'm sure IM2 will raise the bar even higher.

I am looking forward to a fresh spin on the Spidey franchise with the next installment and I hope it's a home run.

Ironman was a really great film, I loved it. But compared to TDK it was just another summer popcorn blockbuster. I doubt very much "average" cinema goers were really impressed by it because they have seen it all before. With TDK though it reaches out to all these, how should I put it? Snobby cinema goers aswell as action and superhero fans. People who want more than just explosions and cheeky one liners. I honestly don't think any Spiderman film will be able to do this, I wish it could but I don't think it will.

Can a sPider-Man movie top The Dark Knight?

Well sure.

All it has to do is not suck too hard and have wonderful performances overshadow any gaping plot holes.

I didn't mean to take anything away from TDK. It's a great film, but Spider-man shouldn't be measured according to Batman. They are two separate entities. Nolan created a superhero cop/criminal drama of ilks, or at the very least, he used a lot of those influences. Enough about that.

What I meant in my prior post is that Sony should take a hint from Marvel in staying close to the character roots, yet making sure to give it a contemporary feel. Iron-Man did this better than any Spidey film. The minute you're introduced to Stark, he's appealing. <not because of his personality type, but because of how he's portrayed.> Also, Iron-Man was critically acclaimed as well. A very broad audience enjoyed this film also.

I feel that Raimi's Parker is often lost in the struggle to have the audience sympathize for the character. We're losing a lot of great Peter Parker moments that could serve the films better. I hope we see more of a dereliction from the last film, and more of a return to the first one. A fresh feel with a new way to mature and develop Spidey.

Financially, no Spider-man film will ever top TDK.[2nd highest domestic gross? 4th highest worldwide? The TDK sequel probably won't top that. It's insane.] That's nothing to whine about. Story wise, that remains to be seen. It could, but it would have to involve some epic material from the mythos. It doesn't really matter as long as the film is the best it can be. These comparisons are so fruitless because the film should compete with the last Spidey film, not anothers. The only reason why I mentioned IM is because it's another Marvel franchise that has commenced in the right way.

Agreed. In SM3 I really didn't give a toss about Parker, he was just a wanker. To be honest I havn't really liked Peter Parker since the first one, in SM2 there was a few great moments (especially the part in the lift! :D ) But I still found him to be a whiny little prick. Where did all the wise cracks from the comics go?

I agree with you completely. Also it won't be serious enough for an older audience to relate to. Let's also not forget that it won't have a villain as big as the Joker in it.

I feel the exact same way.

I also didn't like how Parker suddenly had a backbone when the symbiote bonded with him. Spider-man is the backbone of Parker, but also the heavy burden he carries imo. It shouldn't emote him to the point where all he can do is
gently weep
or get very close to that. He's one of my favorite Superheroes. A poignant moment with him overlooking the city. Okay and . Him sitting in a French restaurant whining about 'I don't want to push you away. . . I love you. . . '

RaImI NoOoOoOoO:csad::(:csad:

Save us Vanderbilt. Please save us.:liz:

Parker's stance and Spidey's trademark wit haven't been there. Here's to hoping that 4 changes that.

if they didn't screw up the symbiote saga hell yeah spidey would top t.d.k in a ny minute!!

What so you want them to adapt the Secret Wars storyline? That wouldn't make a good film IMO. Well maybe it could but then you wouldn't be able to compare to TDK.

no not at all, they could of did the whole shuttle story line, after all they did introduce john jameson. & i mean the real black/white symbiote costume that can morph into anything peter thinks of.not that terrible dark grey outfit in s-m3. the overall story arc of the symbiote saga trumps any batman story, imo! the eddie brock as a villian trumps joker, only if they got the right actor like jason statham or someone who can play evil with bad intentions!!!

Alright yea I was thinking they would do the space shuttle story after introducing John Jameson, it would of been better than a stupid comet landing in Central Park.

Hold on a second, you think Eddie Brock/Venom is a better villain than the Joker? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And I thought my jokes were bad! I think Venom is a great villain but Joker is the greatest villain in any medium ever, not just comics.

Yeah, because Venom has done so many memorable things as a villain. He's stalked Spider-Man, and stalked Spider-Man, and oh yeah....stalked Spider-Man.

He's never killed or even seriously hurt anyone close to Peter. And he's supposed to be a personal enemy to Spidey. He's a pathetic excuse for a villain. Sam Raimi saw the character for what he is. That's why he never wanted to use him.

don't get me wrong, joker is excellent!! but if they would have the right director, writer's,& actor venom would fantastic.think back to the fox spider-man cartoon but, multiply that by 10 or 20.if venom wanted to he could kill just about everyone in peters world! i mean he can really mentally torture peter.that's the venom i want to see..

^ Right... he COULD kill anyone in Peter's world... but in the comics, he never has, and never will. The Joker is scary because he follows through on his word - Venom doesn't, he continuously makes empty threats. The Venom in the movie did more than Venom ever did in the comics, because he killed Harry - Peter's best friend... and even that was an accident.
