The Dark Knight Can The Dark Knight win an Oscar

IMO I think Supporting Actor is just as possible as Lead Actor - the question is how possible I think an oscar for Leading Actor is.

nope, won't happen.... I have never scene a person nominated for best actor in a sequel after they portrayed that person in the original, minus sigorney weaver

The movies best chance to haul in an Oscar Nomination perhaps lies in the hands of Heath Ledger. It's a courageous, bold choice of casting, definately a risk for Ledger with something he's never played before, if written well and performed well Ledger will have an oppurtunity to steal the movie as well as perhaps deliever a psychologically intense character. The ACADEMY seems to always love rewarding actors doing things outside their norm and with make-up, (Cate Blanchette, Jamie Foxx, George Clooney, Nicole Kidman, Charliez Theron some recent ones come to mind). Screen time won't really matter if Ledger/Joker isn't in it too much. Anthony Hopkins, Geoffrey Rush, and To me, anyways, it always appears that the Academy love to honor Actors with the award for a previous movie they were in, not the movie they actually won if for. Russell Crowe got it for Gladiator, but acutally won it with The Insider, and Denzel Washington won it for Training Day, yet most likely won it for The Hurricane.

So put me down for Heath Ledger being the best chance at a nomination!

The Academy looks at performances when considering it's Best Picture nominees. It's no coincidence that nearly every Best Picutre candidate has a Best Actor/Acrtress nominees along with them. Despite what fanboys think, Bale isn't winning anyone an Oscar. Supporting Actor is definitely the biggest award it could ever hope for.

Not really. Spider-Man had heart and is someone everyone can relate to. Spider-Man 2 was not only an action movie, but so a romance movie, which upped the appeal to just about anyone. Spider-Man 2 was one of the best reviewed movies of 2004, if not the best. It wasn't just a popcorn movie, because SM2 had alot of substance.

I think it was a well-made movie, and I can't argue that it was one of the best reviewed movies...but what I mean is, it was still very light-hearted and popcornish. A bit campy at times....a little over-the-top...but that is what families like for family movies. The scene where the people carried Spidey on their hands down the train just screamed melodramatic cheese. I mean, it's not quite in the same league as a classic like THE GODFATHER is all I'm saying. Not quite Academy calibur....regardless of how many buckets of popcorn were sold.

Batman wont win an Oscar....they aint gonna give no Superhero movie an Oscar in the major categories come on now.

The committee wants to be all sophisticated and give it to movies with orginally penned screenplays or classic pre-modern era literature (Hence why LOTR might be the lone exception. Of course it was huge but the fact it was written a century or so ago it gets a pass). The fact of the matter is many blockbuster films have turned out to be classics and the best films of there respective year but there just not what the oscars want. I dont know they dont feel like giving to movies with spaceships and things.....

You can imagine the hypothetical scenario when they select movies:

Old Committee guy: I pick Hotel Rawanda. It was a stunning and moving piece on the genocide in Africa and one man's plight to save his people. It was well acted superbly shot, outstanding performances and has a tragic story still relevant in these times.

Woman: I pick Capote, a fantastic and intruiging story based on the real events of Capote Truman and his bold reporting and writing style highlighting his era of penning "In Cold Blood" and investigating one of America's intruiging murder mysterys. The movie is well shot and Hoffman stands out resurrected this enigmatic man complimented perfectly with a strong script

Dude: " I pick Million Dollar baby. This is a touching and gritty pure story about a poor woman who looks to overcome her odds and learn to fight on her way to challenging the champion. Clint Eastwood is maginicent as the old grizzly veteran fighter coaching in this touching would be daughter and father story. Morgan Freeman is wonderful as Eastwoods friend. Shot beautiful in a gritty atmosphere by Eastwood with a powerful script by Paul Haggis."

Comic book Guy: I pick Batman Begins. Dude this movie is like sooo friggin sweet. It's directed by that dude who made his movie go all backwards n ****. And it's got that badass dude from American Psycho who flexes his when banging chicks man and then he like drops chainsaws on them and is like....anyway **** that, so like this is about a dude who's parents get killed in front of him so he like travels the world and fights Ninjas and **** and these ninjas are like soooo friggn sweet cause they train people to like have some balls and like fight 100 dudes Matrix all Heeee-yaaaa *karate chop* and then so like he goes back and he's scared of bats right but he figures like Yo..**** it I'mma make those dudes like fear what I fear so runs around dressed like a Bat N **** right...and he drives this badass ride, dude I swear this ride is sooo awesome man it makes Captain Pickard's Starship Enterprise look like Kirks from the 60's. It's like this sweet lambo but with like Hummer rims, and this dude who played god in that Jim Carrey movie one time hooks him up cause he like blatantly looks like he works for those dudes Xzibit sees every week on Pimp My Ride and he has to fight this weird creepy kid who like my buddy Matt who I skate and smoke with and he's got this sweeet PCP **** that if you throw in people's face they have this killer buzz and starts freaking out in ****. Like Dude ****ing A man....."

*Committee leaves while Comic Book Dude rambles*

^there's been plenty of left field nominations before...

I guess you're right.
...and BB was 109407025x better than SM2.

Sure...in an alternate dimension where superhero flicks are given the chance.

But on a serious note, everything would have to be perfect, and it would have to make every other film coming out that year look like nothing. And right now, the Casino Royale sequel and Indiana Jones are marked for '08 as well. So making other films look like nothing, you can mark that out.

I don't think a new James Bond or Indiana Jones film would give the Oscar contenders a run for their money.

I hope someday Oscar will include category like "The Best Comic Book Adaptation" and BB3 will be the winner

The Romance of Spider-man 2 was teen bop sit com quality. Guy likes Girl, Girl likes Guy, Girl dates other guy to make guy jealous - not deep. It was not enough to make a person who didn't like Spider-man like Spider-man 2, because basically it was the same love story Spider-man had.

Spider-man 2 was a fun film, it was not a great film. Batman Begins was a great film.

I totally disagree, i won't bother explaining because it would just snowball into a pider-man debate in the bat forums, but I thought it was simply one of the best comic book movies, along with x2 and begins of course.

No but it could give The Dark Knight a run for its money, particularly the former.

JOKERNICK,

Yes Ledger was nominated for BEST ACTOR in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and most Odds Makers had it coming down to him Vs. Hoffman for the Award.

That's why Ledger winning Best Supporting Actor seems like the best bet for the next Film.

Or Al Pacino?

I agree with you there, but we are talking about Oscar chances.

After the LOTR win, the Oscars have became more conservative recently and don´t seem willing to give "serious" nominations for blockbusters. We should focus on the Saturns, those are the awards where the Batman movies will be compared to their peers. Last year, we beat Star Wars and King Kong, 2008, who knows...

The possibility exists for any film if it is of sufficient caliber, which is why Begins was not nominated: genre limitations are an excuse. Now I strongly suspect that DK will be better written than Begins, and thus a better film overall, which would give it the outside chance that Begins never had.

well here are a list of movie that don't seem like oscar types, IMO

6th sense
Babe
Pulp Fiction
fatal attraction
tootsie
ET
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Star Wars
Jaws
Excorcist

yes, all classics in their own way, but they went against the norm of what's normally nominated

Godfather I assume

but yeah... those are probably the only two... Bale isn't in their league as far as "name" "creditibilty" or 'talent"

atleast not yet

I agree. If that happens, then only thing that could hold it back is the performances.

Wait, I don't think Pacino won an Oscar for Godfather II. That was Robert DeNiro.
