Ok, so we know that Heath Ledger is getting a whole lot of attention for his outstanding and memorable performance as the Joker. And, we all know he deserves that recognition!

What I think is, Christopher Nolan and co. should also get an Oscar nod for bringing the Dark Knight to the screen. It's been pretty clear that the Academy shuns these kinds of movies for an Academy nod. But, if this film is as grand an epic as all the critics and the fans believe it to be after next week, don't you guys and gals think the board at the Academy should give Nolan some credit where credit is due?

Look at it this way, Nolan turned a comic book character and made it a 'respectable' film. Not some generic, summer popcorn flick that is expected of most typical summer movies. All the critics so far have raved about how intelligent, dark and serious this film is and what incredible and subtle performances the cast have put in. All under the guidance of Christopher Nolan who worked on the story with brother Jonah and David Goyer. Don't you guys think that is reason enough to give this film some respect?

Not only will this do extremely well at the box office, it's going to be talked about and revered as a classic. Who will ever forget the summer of 2008? This is how it's feeling to me. This is why I think Christopher Nolan should also be recognized for not only bringing Ledger and Batman some huge popularity, but bringing in something entirely new and different for summer films.

I don't want to see Dark Knight just win technical achievements at the Academy this year. I'd like to see Nolan's name on the Best Director & Best Original Screenplay category. Hell, I want to dream further. I'd love to see this film get a Best Picture nod!

this has been discussed a rather large number of times already I'm afraid, just a heads up :)

Sigh! I searched the boards for any topic related to this before posting. Sorry. Where is the original discussion located?

Way too early for this type of talk... maybe wait until the end of it's theater run, full accumulated box-office, final rotten tomatoes score and then discuss in detail, what this movie truly deserves.

BUT... Heath owns that Oscar already in my eyes!!

I want to see Nolan, Ledger, Pfister, and the movie going home with Oscars. Bale with a nom, because working actors with Oscars, 80% of the time, have their career go downhill from there. Just a suggestions. Would love of Bale to get one, though. Long overdue.:brucebat:

Roeper surprisingly said The Dark Knight should be considered for a Best Picture nomination.

See, there ya go! He's not the only one, surprisingly. I remember reading JimmyO's review at JOblo and he said the same thing.:brucebat:God, I hope it happens. Who knows, this movie might just sucker the Academy to reconsider the comic-book franchise as more important.

Oh yeah, I forgot about JimmyO's review. (on a side-note, unfortunately, doesn't it seem like some of the writing on JoBlo's been subpar for the past year or so? I know a lot of it has to do with Berge being sick, but still. It sucks cause JoBlo is my favorite movie site.)

Yeah, Roeper said it's on the same level as Heat and even The Departed. I think the Academy needs to stop smelling their own farts and view this movie as a well-made film and not just a comic book film. It just sucks cause **** like Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider tarnishes and pigeonholes other well-done comic movies as well.

Speaking of which, with the amount of talented directors out there, it still surprises me that we still get hokey garbage like Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four. I'm still crossing my fingers for a Daredevil reboot.

^ Love Joblo as well. The Academy really needs to reconsider this genre, especially if it keeps shelling out more like this.:brucebat:

In the end though, the only Oscar is going to this guy:

That's right.

It has but it has been spread out amongst threads. Wouldn't mind seeing a consolidated conversation.

It would be cool if The Dark Knight got a couple nominations. Cinematography, Supporting actor, maybe editing. I really hope nobody makes stupid unrealistic suggestions about TDK like the way some made about BB

"Best Director: Chris Nolan"
"Best Leading Actor: Christian Bale"
"Best Supporting Actor: Cillian Murphy
"Best Costume Design"

Or other crazy ******** like that :whatever:

Yeah, I agree, but the difference is that this time it isn't just fan specualtion. When you have more than one person say that the film deserves best picture, than that has to say something. The first one was good, but not enough to warant those kinda nominations that you wrote, and I've yet to see this new one, but those review for TDK have to mean something.:brucebat:

i wouldn't be surprised if TDK got best supporting actor and best cinematography noms, and that was that....but i also wouldn't be surprised if the academy pulled a lord of the rings and gave TDK a boatload of nominations, but "epic fantasy based on classic novels" has more pull than "epic superhero flick based on COMICS LOL WTF" in the academy's eyes....

also lets not forget BB got a few nominations, all technical, but still, it probably won't get completely shut out. i can guarantee it will get a cinematography nomination.

and in the long run, what do the oscars even mean? a lot of films that win boatloads of oscars are never even mentioned again, while many films that win nothing go on to become classics. so who cares, really.

I really don't know why this thread exists.

Yes there is a bunch of "buzz" around this film, BUT the majority of posters here have not seen it yet and can not argue on how it should be nominated for anything.

If you want to start a thread on this, it should probably be something along the lines of The Dark Knight's Clips and Trailers make is deserving of nominations.

Not to be a dick or anything, I know this film will be *****ing amazing, but how can you say it deserves an oscar without seeing it?

It just makes no sense.

i think it's more in line with how many, many reviewers have been giving it oscar love and what we think of that. at least thats how i took to it.

That makes a bit more sense, but what I'm really impressed with is the Ticket Sales...... I mean 6:00Am showings?!!?!?! have you ever heard of that before?

People bag the Academy all the time for not recognizing blockbuster movies, but the Academy has good reason, they are the money makers for studios, that's all they're really there for, that's why they are released during school breaks. The Dark Knight may be the turning point, by the sounds of things Nolan may have lifted the blockbuster into a new level, an intelligent blockbuster if you will, one that requires people to actually pay attention and focus on, the type of film Academy members like. If The Dark Knight was to get recognized for the major Oscars, it could very well change the way studios make their money makers, and it would be for the better.

and in the long run, what do the oscars even mean? a lot of films that win boatloads of oscars are never even mentioned again, while many films that win nothing go on to become classics. so who cares, really.

A lot of people say that now, I'm curious to know if the attitude to the Academy would change if The Dark Knight were to win.

Will be nominated:

Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger

May be nominated:

Best Cinematography - Wally Pfister
Best Costume Design - Lindy Hemming
Best Make-up
Best Sound
Best Sound Effects Editing
Best Editing

Should be nominated but probably won't:

Best Original Screenplay - Jonathan and Christopher Nolan
Best Director - Christopher Nolan
Best Picture

Won't be nominated because of stupid rules:

Best Original Score - Hanz Zimmer and James Newton Howard

It would be nominated for best adapted screenplay, even though it's not based on a specific Batman story it's still based on an already existing source material.

And by the current critic buzz it just might get that nomination.

Gladiator and Lord of the Rings paved the way for big budget prime season blockbusters to get Oscar attention, Johnny Depp gave the more popcorny flicks street cred and set a precedent with his POTC nomination. I think we're at a point in time that if TDK is deserving of major awards that it won't get automatically overlook simply for the fact that it's a comic book movie, if it's deserving.

Agreed all the way. I'll make my judgements later, but I see this one winning big, if the Academy really drops their prejuduice against comic book movies.:brucebat:

Plus, Nolan and Bale are long overdue IMHO.
