Canada is under attack

Reports that at least one has escaped.

This is a big deal. An assault on the legislature of a free democracy is a heinous crime, in my opinion worse than an attack on a president or a monarch.

I don’t know if I’d go to the route of “worse” but both are especially despicable. The first though I had when I read this was “Only raised to medium? Really?”, god knows if it happened anywhere else it’d be a bigger deal or at least I assume as such. But yeah, I guess political unrest can happen anywhere, even Canada.

There were three; one is dead, one on the run, one escaped by motorcycle.

I think saying that Canada is under attack is a bit of a stretch.

I think those of us who are fortunate enough to live in liberal democracies forget how fragile they are. Generally, you can just walk into our parliaments. Canada's parliament is at least guarded by armed men. Ours is guarded by a Serjeant-at-Arms. With a sword.

You can’t possibly be serious. How is this a thing in 2014? Fundamental defense and protection against terrorism as well as possible unrest that could lead to insurrection should be a high priority. I just can’t fathom this.

I am very disappointed that a man with a long gun was able to cross from the War Memorial all the way inside Centre Block before he was stopped. That is like walking across the grounds of the White House with a rifle. Someone is going to have to answer some tough questions.

Especially disturbing considering the vehicular attack on unarmed Canadian soldiers in Quebec a couple of days ago (incidentally by a white French-Canadian Muslim convert).

I don't do prayers, but thoughts for the Canadian people right now.

No joke, this is the last thing I would ever expect to happen in Canada. That said, thoughts, prayers and positive energy go towards the Canadian people and those affected. Catch those other two sumb****es and give 'em justice.

I can see the logic in this even in 2014 seeing as bullets can miss a target and kill someone else a lot easier than a sword missing its mark. I'd assume though at least some of the guards have guns or similar projectile weapons.

Wow, this is just scary. My thoughts go out to those injured. Hope they catch the ones responsible for this.

If this attack was motivated by what we are all thinking it was motivated by, it will be a wakeup call to all the other smaller coalition partners like Australia that they need to be more vigilant.

I dont know what you are all thinking it was motivated by.

I'm currently in Toronto downtown, working in my print shop and it's all I'm literally hearing on the Radio.

First event like this to happen in a long, long time in recent Canadian memory. Prayers go to all the people under lock down in Ottawa, a long with the people who were affected by the gunmen. I heard even schools that were 5 kilometers from the site are under lock down too.

Two days ago, a radicalized Muslim convert in Quebec staked out a military office and ran down two unarmed soldiers with his car, killing one, in order to express his opposition to Canada's participation in the anti-ISIS campaign.

Right now, nobody knows for sure what this shooting is about and I won't jump to conclusions, but I bet I know what everyone here is thinking.

So Batman pisses off stamp collectors & Canada is under attack. Weird news day

Yeah, definitely glad the thing is over. These nuts are all over.

Canadian soldier, sorry.

It's not over either. There's still a gunman on the loose.
