This morning I saw a homeless guy wearing red pirate boots waving a flag with a pink swastika on it. I immediately thought of this forum.

Was that the report that said she was mad at him for flirting with a receptionist? If that's true, it makes it even worse.

There's no receptionist in that scene. Rogers is with another guy.

I suspect [BLACKOUT]they weren't giving Peggy the proper level of attention and/or respect since...y'know, they're guys in the 1940's and she's a woman. Her shooting spree was a way of quickly correcting that behavior(which Rogers does do since he's a decent guy and all and more open to such a way of thinking...it just means that he's prone to the same mind set of his time as any other guy would be...at least initially).[/BLACKOUT] That's my personal guess.

Damn it's a long way still. Thankfully there are enough others to fill the gap between now & then.

It's not that bad. Like you say there's plenty to see between now and then to keep us busy, plenty of appetizers before the main course, so to speak.

Oh Im not trolling. I meant what I said. You can have a three dimensional character and not have that woman just be a male character looking like a woman. That is what female characters have become: Men...just without the...

There are wonderful things about women that are unique to them but movies, television...the internet, never seems to utilize those but only seems to take qualitys that are for men and just transplant them onto women, and I guess this is suppose to make women feel the same, or free or equal or...something? Why not just be proud of who you are rather then pretending to be something your not?

Oh and don't talk to me about unequality. At my job every man, myself included, works 50 times harder then any woman. Ive never asked for help from any woman when I was working, the same cannot be said for the other.

My favorite part of this post is that he was going along, making an actual point for once, and then it's like he remembered who he was supposed to be and threw in the last paragraph as an anchor to keep him in Troll Harbor.

Once again...I have no words.

I can definitely see what some are saying, re. female characters. You don't want to simply think of the filmmakers taking a male part and casting a female to play it. That's not a great way to establish equality.

In this case though I disagree, at least based on what I've read from Atwell about her character. Peggy IS a part of the military--part of her character will have to explore what that means for her personality. I would imagine she'd be up to shoot guns and fight. She has to navigate the male world of the military too, which might mean her needing to adopt a more aggressive personality. But, in that interview, Atwell touches on some of Peggy's connection with Steve and why she's drawn to him. Now I'm hopeful that the script and Johnston and Atwell found a way to flesh out Peggy's character even more, so there is a balance that some of us are looking for with the main female character.

But... I still do love the shooting the shield scene personally. :cwink:

While I disagree with his main point I find it interesting that you considered "just be a woman" to be the objectionable part of his post.

Because that implies being a woman is a bad thing. Which is a strange, yet amazingly common belief in modern feminism.

It seems that what makes a 'strong' woman nowadays is how close to a man they are. I don't think that's fair.

No, I'm not saying women should just stay in the kitchen and have babies, or that they are emotionally weak. But they shouldn't be shoehorned into male stereotypes either.

Not that I think the character of Peggy Carter is doing this. Although I still think the shooting at the shield scene is a forced attempt to make her look badass but it just makes her look stupid.
The idea that "just being a woman" is loving and supporting a man is obviously the objectionable point. Placing the word just into that statement after spouting a few stereotypes is obviously the objectionable point. It does not imply that being a woman is a bad thing, but rather that simplifying what it means to be a woman into two stereotypes is hilariously stupid.

Screw love interests. I want a bromance with Bucky in CA:TFA and a bromance with Tony in the Avengers.

Although Peggy is hella hot...

Yes, that was what The Mayor was saying and it is why I'm not defending him. But the fact that "just being a woman" was the line that was quoted and pointed out as being the most sexist part of his post is worrying. There is a mentality among modern day feminism that acting womanly is bad. As in being maternal, wearing dresses or wearing pink. It does nothing but reinforce the idea that male characteristics are superior.

I just explained why I pulled it out. If you got that out of my pulling that line from his post it says more about you than me I'm afraid.

Regarding the sexism, I semi-understand TheMayor's original statement. Not every female lead in a comic book/action movie, needs to be a character that's trying to measure up to the guys, nor does she have to be the damsel in distress always getting kidnapped or something.

I think Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in Thor is the kind of role he's referring to. She wasn't a cliche to try to be some kick ass female, but she also wasn't the girl that needed saving 24/7.

However, with Peggy Carter, she should be the former character type.

I could give it a try if you like. Mind you I've seen my posts taking him on disappear before, along with his, so maybe I shouldn't. lol

I don't think themayor really meant that so much as saying they should be back to damsels in distress. I think he may have hit upon something that holds some truth in his rant, but I think Brian Braddock had it spot on when said themayor had stopped short of saying "get back in the kitchen".

The greatest of all, next to this of course.

Wow. This thread took an interesting direction in this last page. Lets not start the sexism thing again though, please!
