Captain Marvel General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

Possibly. The comments are certainly leaning towards wanting to introduce her without powers and show an origin. On the other hand, since Spider-Man changed the movie order, they could always put her origin in Avengers IW1.

Her movie was always coming after IW1, even before the release date shift, so I've always believed her origin happening in that film was a very distinct possibility.

It depends on how closely Marvel wants to tie the Captain Marvel movie to the Infinity War movies or how big and expansive they want Carol's role in the MCU to be.

It makes sense to me for them to introduce Carol in her own movie and do the origin there and then bring her in to Infinity War part two. It fits with how they introduced Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, and how they are gonna introduce Dr. Strange (Black Panther is a unique case).

Glad to see they will be announcing script writers soon

I love how Variety tweeted it with "The film still has not found a director or an actress to play the title character." Still? It's over 3 years away, calm down a little. :funny:

...oh god it's over 3 years away. :csad:

Cool news!
I remember Nicole Perlman was supposed to be writing a Gamora solo comic but there hasn't been much news on that lately, I guess we know why now...

Film and TV writers have a notoriously poor track record with comic titles. Since you get paid less for comics, the screenwriting almost always takes priority and the comics end up with massive delays. Kevin Smith's Batman and Joss Whedon's X-Men are pretty legendary examples.

“Captain Marvel” is Marvel’s first female-driven superhero movie. The project doesn’t have a director yet, but TheWrap has learned that Marvel plans to hire a female filmmaker, as the comic book follows Air Force pilot Carol Danvers.

Michelle MacLaren has been rumored for the coveted job, as she just departed the “Wonder Woman” movie at Warner Bros. due to creative differences.

Hmm...

Happy about the writing team! I'd be cool with MacLaren, though I have doubts she'd be interested if she didn't like working within the WB franchise machine.

A commenter on Badass Digest claims he's read every script of GOTG. If anyone was wondering what Perlman came up with...

I read every draft of GOTG and a LOT of her stuff made it through. The first 15 pages (the temple orb set piece) is pretty much exactly from her drafts. A lot of the stuff with Groot (his spores lighting up the ship, sacrificing for the group...) was her contribution. A lot of the group dynamics (Quill and Gamora flirting with each other) is something she came up with and isn't in the comics. She even came up with the idea that Quill holds onto things from Earth because it's a connection to his dead mom.

Gunn did contribute a lot as well. He added nearly all of the humor which probably made him think that he contributed more than he really did. Her stuff was more thankless but still integral.

Glad to see someone outside the process comment. Although even Perlman agrees that Gunn changed a lot of things. But it's good to see she has some talent with this - there was a fear during Guardians that she was being overhyped. But the fact that she's on a major project beyond the draft stage indicates something very positive.

Perlman is a female writer who has already written a Marvel movie dealing with cosmic characters so I am not at all surprised Marvel wants her to write Captain Marvel. Seems like a natural fit to me.

Kinda hate that Gunn tried to take all the credit for Guardians. This certainly makes up for it.

Makes me a little hesitant for Guardians 2, but I don't think Marvel will tolerate him if his ego goes out of line.

Nothing new but Marvel confirmed the Perlman and LeFauve news:

Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve to Write Marvel's 'Captain Marvel'

Duo to pen Carol Danvers' first solo film, in theaters 2018!

Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve will together write Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” in theaters November 2, 2018, bringing Carol Danvers to the big screen in her first solo cinematic adventure.

Fans will recognize Perlman as the co-writer of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” last year’s smash hit introducing audiences to Star-Lord and his crew, while LeFauve most recently co-wrote Disney•Pixar’s next original film “Inside Out,” which will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May before heading to theaters June 19.

Good to get the confirmation.

Does Black Panther have writers? I assumed they would have hired them first since his movie comes out first.

Very happy to have that confirmation.

And to answer your question Slam, there was a writer for Black Panther announced years ago, well before The Avengers came out. Mark Bailey's his name and he's mainly a documentary guy. I'd never heard of him and I have no idea if he's still on board, but he's still listed as the writer on the movie's IMDB page. I'd imagine we'll hear about another writer coming on board to do a revision on that sometime in the near future, because I doubt whatever script he came up with those years ago reflects the current MCU plans.

I would think that Bailey would receive a writing credit for Black Panther like Pearlman did for GOTG and Zac Penn did for Avengers.

Agreed. I'll just be surprised if he remains the sole writer.
