Annette Bening? Cool. Now she has to meet Hank Pym.

My guess: Since they directly name-checked Terminator 2 as inspiration, we're at least getting some sort of awesome chase sequence on Earth. However, I expect most of other big action to happen in space, so a basic government cover-up on whatever pieces transpire on Earth seems like a good bet to me.

Regarding your second questions, I hadn't put much thought in it, but now I wonder if Carol wasn't....emphatically persuaded to stay away from Earth for the reasons you mentioned. Which would also partially explain why [blackout]Fury didn't contact her to come back[/blackout] 'til now. Maybe the clandestine government entities of Earth straight-up kicked her out when she refused to play ball or something, and she didn't want to force her presence somewhere she wasn't wanted (plus she just learned of a whole universe of other civilizations out there to explore, so, why not).

On the other topic, I have no problem with expanding the mother's role. If she's the alcoholic parent, I just hope it doesn't resemble I, Tonya too much with McKenna Grace likely playing Young Carol, lol.

I hadn't thought of that myself. You could make it an inverse of the Peter Quill story. A human chooses to leave the planet for a mix of altruism (don't want to make Earth more of a target, afraid of the complications they may cause) and the call of adventure and the unknown.

I suspect the ending may be a bittersweet combination of that, and maybe the feeling like she doesn't really have a place on Earth anymore. Which would of course change when she inevitably returns and learns how much Earth has seen/changed.

Yes it would make sense that Carol would feel like on Earth she doesn't belong I mean especially given how long she has been gone or would have been gone and then given what she comes back to yeah even more reason for her to be a reluctant hero

Bening becomes the 48th Academy nominated actor to appear in an MCU movie (including voice-over roles)

Annette Bening in an Mcu movie?! Holy heck! Never thought I'd see this.

Once you see people like Robert Redford, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer sign up, the stigma is gone.

Costume still looks very meh.

The idea that she ends up being more at home and accepted in outer space than on earth is a really compelling one. Could be very melancholy and emotional.

Reading these comments makes me hope that it does work like that, though I'm open to other possibilities, of course.

I remember Russell Crowe talking about turning down superhero roles saying he'd never wear tights, then ending up in a Superman film where they gave Jor-El tights (fancy, Wilkinson-designed tights, but tights nonetheless) even though they absolutely did not have to. :funny:

But yeah, the stigma's been long gone. There are basically just a few pretentious filmmakers (who, let's be real, are annoyed at the budgets these films get while they struggle to get their passion projects funded) still singing that tune.

Every once in a while, you still hear something. I think that Jodie Foster made some dismissive comment not too long ago, that James Gunn responded to in a thoughtful way.

If they are indeed taking primary inspiration from Kelly Sue's run as they seem to be, then I think there's a good chance of getting something like that. Her Carol was very much a stargazer trying to find new ceilings to bust through and find her place in the universe, not finding it on Earth.

With Fury and Coulson in this film along with SHIELD or what used to be SHIELD which we now know as HYDRA I wonder then if then wouldn't it make sense for Alexander Pierce to be in this film especially if it takes place during the 90s? Or how about Peggy and or Howard Stark?

She could view the fight as just another mission/job and have no feelings towards Earth. That could make for an interesting personality clash with the other heroes. They are all connected to each other and bonded but she just wants the mission over with.

The stigma was never a thing in my humble opinion.

In 1978 Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were two of the biggest stars on the planet, period. Brando was a superstar and highly respected talent for twenty years or so prior. Hackman was in demand and doing some of his most iconic work during the same era that produced the first Superman movie.

A little over a decade later Jack Nicholson was another blockbuster talent that could get butts in seats based on his attachment to a project alone when he played the Joker in the first Burton film. In the second they managed to get Pfeiffer who was on a hot streak and an established talent but also roped in Christopher Walken and Danny Devito, again, both well known and respected performers that had been around a while. Even later there was Dafoe in the first Raimi Spidey and then Stewart in the X films.

Whatever stigma there was I suggest was shed in 1977 when Alec Guinness gave a sheen of credibility to Lucas' STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE. After that most established talent looked at this sort of material as just another gig I think.

Now that we have Benning, can we get Warren Beatty a role?

Warren (who is my cousin) is 81. I wonder what roles they would have for him that wouldn't require CGI de-ageing.

Well, at 81 he'd likely be a former something!

I'm just wondering what roles from the comics he could play.

Not the biggest Bening fan, but definitely cool having another big honest-to-god movie star in one of these.
