May Parker: Diane Weist

+ frequently plays super-nice, motherly characters
+ has won two Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award
+ needs paying jobs

- has been typecast as super-nice, motherly character & has expressed disinterest in further roles of that type

+/- At 66, is same age as Sally Field was when ASM was filmed

If she's expressed disinterest in this type of role, why would she want to play May?

And I feel that after Sally Field, we need a bigger name for Aunt May. Having Weist would be like going back to someone of Rosemary Harris's stature.

If we're going with an older May, then I'd like Meryl Streep. If a younger one, then Emma Thompson or someone else who would have a lot of gravitas. And if even younger, well... then we'll see.

Streep and Thompson are my two top favourites. I want to see something a little more fun in May and Peter's relationship.

If Diane Lane weren't Ma Kent, I might've suggested her for Aunt May. She had a nice relationship with Clark in Man of Steel where you could believe they were close and cared for each other.

I really want to see Peter and May share a few jokes between themselves. Make it seem more natural than just the worrywart relative.

I would love that, but I`m not sure Streep would sign on. I also really want a bigger name, both for May and Ben (supposing he appears in flashbacks).

But I don't see why Streep wouldn't. She's been in all genres of films, including the voice of the Blue Fairy in AI: Artificial Intelligence, as the Queen Ant in the Ant Bully, Mrs Fox in the Fantastic Mr Fox, and in Mamma Mia, which you might not associate with her.

And if Marvel managed to get Robert Redford, then Marvel isn't beneath Streep. She would also win legions of new fans if she played May and gave the definitive portrayal.

Streep would be good, but I doubt she'd take an ongoing role of limited screen time. She'd probably take a Redford (and presumably Michael Douglas) style, high profile, one & done role. But to have 15 minutes in each Spidey film,I would doubt it.

Great point about Redford. Well, if they get Streep, general goodwill towards this reboot will be greatly increased.

They would need a similar heavy-lifter for Uncle Ben, though.

But conversely, that could be precisely why she might take it. She gets to be in a huge movie, has that ongoing presence, but doesn't have to put in as many hours as that required of a lead role. This is a very high profile role too. So less effort but huge impact.

I'm sorry, but the notion that Streep wouldn't do a movie like that is beyond stupid. MS got Robert %$§*&§/% Redford of all people. And it's not like Streep hasn't done movies like that before. I mean she's nominated for an Oscar for her role as a witch in Into the Woods.

Musicals are beloved by the Academy. Streep gave a very good performance in a movie directed by Rob Marshall, who previously won an Oscar for another Musical.

Alternatively, see how many nominations Les Miserables got a few years back.

Superhero movies are a whole different animal.

No, Raven! I can't be the same age as Aunt May! :wow:

Diane Wiest is a good suggestion for Aunt May. So is Meryl Streep if you really want go big name.

When you are 70, Aunt May will probably be younger than you. :o

lol at people thinking Meryl Streep will EVER play Aunt May

Jane Lynch. :funny:

Jane Lynch would actually be good for Ultimate Aunt May. Any ideas on hippie Ultimate Uncle Ben?

Just for fun though, I still vastly prefer 616`s sweeter versions of them, and would rather see that onscreen.

EDIT: Even better: Jane Lynch for Aunt Carnage! Or SHIELD Agent Aunt May!

Ben Parker: Brendan Gleeson

+ Is awesome
+ Is Irish, which while having no direct relevance to Spider-Man, is also awesome
+ but seriously, this guy is solid gold. He's perfect!

- There are no negatives. If you happen to think of one, you are wrong!

Here's another suggestion for Aunt May, although she might be a little on the old side: Julie Andrews. She would be a big name and instantly conveys warmth and a sense of decency. She's great at comedy too and would be another Hollywood legend to join the MCU.

As I said, she is older than I'd like, but she doesn't look as old as Rosemary Harris that's for sure, so she could play it as if she's younger.

Plus, with the right bun hairstyle she would actually look like a really classic 616 May.

Love the guy, and he`s plenty likable for Uncle Ben. Looks like him too.

Though I`ve always pictured Brendan Gleeson playing Doctor Faustus in the MCU:

Tell me they don`t look exactly alike.

Julie Andrews would be great! She`s just so sweet. But I fear she`s too old: whoever the sign to be May will probably play the character for a decade, and Andrews is already at a time in her life we don`t know if that will be possible. It`s a real shame though, I really like her.

Yes it is a shame. If only she had been younger by a decade or two, she would actually be perfect. I don't know why she wasn't signed for the role in the Raimi movies. She has far more charisma than Rosemary Harris and she's one of the last surviving Hollywood legends from classic cinema.

Now that you mention it! :hmm

LOL she would be a great fit for snarky JMS May.

Wow, that was fast.

Anyway, maybe Craig T. Nelson for hippie Uncle Ben?
