Homecoming What should they do with the Spidey franchise? - Part 1

Too old and too good looking.

Oh please what is wrong with this?! There's always comments on the cast like "too good looking, "not nerdy enough".
If you look at the source material, Peter Parker is actually a good looking man! Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are good looking men.
And I seriously don't understand what some people mean by "nerd" looking.

If they went for post college, adultish modern Pete then hell yeah. That would be harder to integrate though, handwaving how he's been around all these years.

I guess you could make him up to be a bit younger, mid-20s-ish, say he got bit around 18-ish, and then just explain him as been a street-level hero for a while.

He's a fantastic actor so I'd love him in the role

Yeah, you're right, there's no way Disney would want yet another potential Billion dollar franchise :o

A franchise that would require them to spend money on. At present they are getting free money from merchandising without spending a cent.

It could be done, and yeah I like Jake. He'd be great.

Why are people against Peter Parker being a good looking guy? He was a good looking guy in the comics.

Well there's geeky good looking, then there's too model-like good looking. I'm not the best judge of male attractiveness but I think Jake Gullenhaal falls into the latter.

They'd have to spend money to make it, at present it's free.

They spent money to get Marvel.

They spent money to get Lucasfilm.

You know why? To make even more money!

Marvel has all the leverage now that Sony has been exposed. Whatever deal is done be under Marvels terms.

Perfect. Music to my ears.
I'm trying to tamper my expectations, but it's getting tougher and tougher the more I think about it.
If Marvel wasn't the behemoth it's become I would agree, but they have become bigger than Spider-Man. Spider-Man is a luxury item now, he's still earning Disney money through merchandise, if they get the rights back great, if not no big deal, they can wait. If Sony has shown anything in these leaks is that the place is dysfunctional, and as a creative person I sure as hell would want to avoid getting caught up in that type of mess.

Multiple reports have come out saying that Marvel wants all their characters back home. I get what you are saying, but it doesn't matter how big Marvel will ever be; they are always going to want all their characters back under one roof.
The mess is clearly on Sony's shoulders and theirs alone, Marvel wouldn't have any problem getting in bed with them to help straighten out one of their franchises. It's a win/win for everyone. I don't see the issue here, what potential problems do you think Marvel will get "caught up" in exactly?

He is looking a little older these days though, which would be my only concern - ideally Peter should look considerably younger than the other Avengers minus SW / QS

That's just a simple model to doing business, you always have to spend money to make money. Disney would not hesitate for a second to get their hands on yet another Billion dollar monster franchise. They're doing it with Star Wars. They'd do it for Spider-Man. No doubt in my mind.

This.

In terms of looks I actually think Grant Gustin could be a good Spidey. Early 20's but not teenager if that makes sense? He's wrapped up with Flash though...

Were they earning free merch profits from either before?

Look, I'm sure based on the position Marvel Studios is in, they will make the best deal for themselves. I don't see what they are giving up.

Sure they could kick back and keep cashing their yearly checks from merchandising and animation, but if they spent a little to kick start another movie franchise, they would most likely make that back in box office tickets alone, and have a whole other piece of the Spider-man merchandising franchise to milk.
No matter how you look at it, Spider-man will always make Marvel money. They are just trying to figure out more ways to make more, and you do that by making more films. It's that simple. I'm not sure what you don't understand about this.
EDIT: that last bit sounded pithy, I didn't mean for it to come off that way.

To me Andrew Garfield is the live action equivalent of Josh keaton. Both are the two best to portray the character IMO in their respective fields but the timing was just wrong. Josh was and still is the voice to many of us but Edge of time was a bit of a let down and Spectacular the cartoon was great but as with all great series (especially Greg Weismann ones) it got canceled. Insert the disney kid, Drake (I think)

Same with Andrew. I actually loved the ASM movies but think the parents sub plot and cheesy electro should have been done away with, but the cast OH THE CAST. Thye were great IMO. Bt with the shakeup, wouldn't be surprised if we lost an actor born for the role IMO...

I don't doubt they want him back, I think it's not just a case of Sony being dysfunctional, the issues is both studios want different things. Marvel would want an entire clean slate, Sony would want them to 'fix' their current Spider-Man series, essentially leaching of the back of the MCU. If I'm Marvel I wouldn't want that in the slightest, ASM is Sony's mess and it's not their job to clean it up.

I edited my last post to make it sound less rude, I didn't mean to sound like I was talking down to you or anything.
And yes I agree with what you are saying here, but as Marcvader noted I don't think Sony is exactly in a position to be calling shots. Let's hope that is indeed the case, although as I've said, I don't want to get my hopes up for something that could very well never come into fruition.

I do think Marvel wants Spidey back but I also think they aren't desperate to get him back. They're not going to give up the idea that they get the creative control over Sony and with a clean slate. But as others have stated, Sony is not in a position to make demands--their situation is desperate. If a deal is struck, Marvel will have control, imo.

Freaking Avi Arad!!!! :cmad:

I said this before in another thread. Please let this happen to Avi Arad at the end of this summit:

Avi Arad is a spidey villain,he has been in five spidey movies, this is one villain that I wish would die,and stay dead.
Regardless if Marvel wins the rights back or not, the realistic first step should be to fire him.

I think it's because younger Spidey/USM works best on the big screen.
Here's what I think will happen.

-A Sony/Marvel deal will occur. How far the deal tips in one company's favor is yet to be determined. But I think we'll be hearing about some sort of deal in January.

-All of the spin-offs will be cancelled. Amy Pascal has said herself via email that the only things a Spider-Man Cinematic Universe would be comprised of are "Villains, relatives, and girlfriends." At least she knows that one character isn't enough to hold a universe.

-The Amazing Spider-Man series is likely over. If Sony and Marvel team up, we'll be seeing a brand new Spider-Man. This also means Andrew will no longer be playing the character, which is something that is incredibly sad to me, but will happen if Marvel Studios comes into the fold.

I feel like Sony won't really be willing to make an ASM3 at this point, since they keep making less and less money. If they still move forward with the project, obviously many things will change.

What if they tried Miles Morales? Or what if they tried Spider-Verse and they brought in Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Gwen etc?

No thanks. I don't get why everyone keeps saying "i've had enough of Peter! bring in Miles!" the character hasn't even existed for 6 years yet! USM was my favourite version of Spiderman, I grew up reading it, so I'm still pretty pissed that Peter was
killed off
Peter Parker is the true Spider-Man imo. not Miles, not Miguel, not Ben Reilly (although he's a clone)

Now Spiderverse is something I can get into.

I agree on this
