The Dark Knight Rises Casting Call (All Villains)

I don't understand why some people bash Depp, he is one of the best actors of our generation. But its Guy Pearce all the way for me.

Our generation..? I'd take a 20-something actor for my generation :woot: not a guy over 40 (I'm young at heart :funny:)

Im just so sick of Depp's quirky roles. Im a big fan of him, but I feel he need to take more dramatic "serious" roles.

Josh Brolin is the man and he is having a great year. Very possible oscar nomination in Milk, and he looks great in W. He's getting great reviews too. He's my fav choice for Black Mask, and has been for a while.

Yea I like Brolin for Black Mask.

If Depp got the Riddler gig I think he would be great, it would be a role he could really sink his teeth into, something that he has been unable to do for quite some time. But Guy Pearce was born for the Riddler role IMO.

Yea it seems like some people are only counting his roles in the last few years. Haven't they seen Donnie Brasco or Blow?

He's had one of the more diverse careers out of most actors.
I dont think I can possibly disagree with that. But I miss him in more "normal" roles like Gilbert Grape, Finding Neverland, and Donnie Brasco. It can still be a different role.

Finding Neverland was only 4 years ago. Sweeney Todd I wouldn't consider quirky. Neither would John Dillinger which is next year.

I liked that one! Maybe I should point it out in the movies you like that no one else does thread

Maybe 'miss' wasnt the right word. Im aware that he has done "normal" roles. Im not denying that. My point is, I want more "normal" roles, less "burton-ish" roles.

Well, that's good--I don't feel that alone now :oldrazz:

Well I liked it. Sure its not a masterpiece but its a pretty good movie imo.

Johnny Depp sounds like wishful thinking from money hungry executives. If he were to play Nygma, I'd prefer a more calculating incarnation from him, definately not some wacky characterization seen in his last few roles. Lord knows I love Depp, Ed Wood is my all time favorite movie, but I think the character could be more effective if he plays it straight. Some of his best work is when he's playing it cool, like in "Secret Window"
.
As for Guy Pearce, I'm sensing man-crush purposes here. What has Leonard done to warrant such a role? If you want a Nygma to be a fed, than you're going to get Ed Exley, if you want a scientist, look at Time Machine. The guy is great, yes, but not terribly exciting for Riddler.

I seemed to have confused the actor for Leonard Shelby, his greatest character. BUt still, I don't just want to see 'Leonard Shelby' in a green suit.

Im surprised seeing so many people think Depp is great when he plays it straight.

Nick of Time, Blow, and Donnie Brasco are great. I regrettably havent watched Finding Neverland and Public Enemy is shaping up nicely.

But I love Depp as crazy/eccentric characters. Ed Wood, Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the first Pirates, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride, and he was possibly the only good part of Once Upon a Time in Mexico. I feel like he is almost wasted if the character does not have some kind of eccentricity and I do think The Riddler has to be played normally.

sidenote: Depp must play Hunter S. Thompson again. John Cusack and Bill Murray also have pretty good imitations, but Depps has always been better.

Not a fan of a "normal" Riddler. Makes for a very lame villain imo, and dilutes the character's eccentric qualities.

Great call on Once Upon a Time in Mexico, ridiculously bad movie, but Depp was great even with a one note character. If Riddler is the private investigator as in the recent comics, he could make it all right.
Still, an older Riddler could be better. Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale
s incarnation was interesting. William H. Macy could play that really well.

I disagree. I think his intelligence serves a greater threat to Batman, a different threat he has yet to face. His obsession to best Batman and find his identity is a very interesting threat. Plus a use of riddles in his crimes.

I see this more of a characteristic, a motivation, and a gimmick. Yet all could be considered textbook eccentricities, but when it comes to cinema and the Batman world of gimmicky criminals I see eccentricities more like the specific voice, personality, and body language that Heath and Nolan created for the Joker.

I dont think the Riddler should really be any of these. I guess as far as eccentricity goes he should probably be rigid, wannabe sophisticated, acts like a human thesaurus. I guess what I mean is he should be less theatrical as a personality but I suppose all that I mentioned could also be considered eccentric.

Good points cereal killer. It would be interesting to allude to Nygma being smarter than Batman, perhaps even blackmailing Bruce Wayne (although Coleman Reece already took care of this one)
I just don't see any real threat from a guy that's smart and distributes Riddles. Megamomania, anrachy, these are great villain plots. A simple thief and trickster isn't going to cut it.
