It's been a while since I've posted on here, but after seeing this news, I wanted to come here and pay my respects.
First off, Chadwick's death is very personal for me. My mother passed from colon cancer although she was 62. This is a disease we have made so much progress on since my mom passed 20 years ago, yet we still have far, far to go. In general terms the best weapon against colon cancer is screening. Normally for men and woman that starts at 50 but for those like me with a family history it starts at 40 and screening every 5 years instead of 10. For Chadwick, any cancerous polyps under 40 are usually much more agressive, and likely Chadwick had one or more genetic factors that caused him to be diagnosed so early. Needless to say, I implore all of you to get screened, and if you have a family history talk to a gastroenterologist for your best treatment.
Secondly, this is a gut punch. Chadwick was T'Challa and it will be difficult for me to see anyone else in that role. It is even more heart wrenching when you learn that Chadwick was fighting this disease the whole time he was portraying this character.
I am a suburban white guy, but for millions of Americans and people of color around the world Chadwick's portrayal was a symbol of hope. At this time especially in the United States, we are showing how far we still need to go. Black Panther was about more than just a superhero film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was about showing to the world that no matter who you are, where you come from, or what you look like we all have value, and that we must do whatever we can to heal the barriers between us.
To me Chadwick's performance can really only be compared to Christopher Reeve in terms of impact. While Superman was much more of a household name than Black Panther, both actors embodied the character and understood the cultural importance of what they were doing. It was clear from all the red carpet events and the Comic con appearances, knowning what we do about what Chadwick must have been suffering with, it shows his professionalism, his wisdom in understanding the importance of what he did and the dedication. The struggle of the workout routines he was doing to stay in shape for the character while at the same time likely struggling to keep weight on through countless surgeries and chemotherapy treatments.
I can't express enough gratitude to what Chadwick has meant to me as a fan before I knew any of this, but it has expanded 10 fold.
To Chadwick's friends and family, my deepest prayers and sympathies.
RIP Chadwick Boseman!
