So, I was reading up on Wolverine and came across an interesting but forgotten part of the character's history. When he debuted, he was originally called "The Wolverine." There were even comics in which he refers to himself as such.

These days, no one ever calls him, "The Wolverine." Just, "Wolverine." That is when I remembered that Batman was once called "The Batman." So this leads me to wonder; How many other characters have lost the article in front of their name? Are there other characters, or are Wolverine and Batman just a matter of happenstance?

The Thing, The Green Lantern, The Flash, The Martian Manhunter, The Elongated Man, The Green Goblin, The Hobgoblin, The Spot...

All have "the" optional.

But did any of those characters refer to themselves as "The <character name>?" Wolverine literally calls himself, "The Wolverine." I can't ever recall seeing Flash call himself, "The Flash."
