The Dark Knight Charles Roven Talks About Heath as 'The Joker'

I liked Heath Ledger in The Things I hate About You.

Hahahaha, I meant to type: "Ten Things I hate About You" !!!

Pop Quiz #2:

You put Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in the same room with Tom Cruise. Who does Tom Cruise turn into a Scientologist first, Bale or Ledger?

Bale is more dedicated to his roles than Ledger, look at "The Machinist".

Who's to say Heath is not as dedicated? He just has not come by a role that demanded such physicality. But even regardless, dedication is great, but doesn't always equal a terrific performance.

Marlon Brando didn't even memorize his lines in The Godfather, he read them off of a cue card. Not much dedication there but he gave one of the best performances ever seen on a silver screen that won him a Best Actor Oscar. Brando was overweight and refused to drop a single pound for Apocalypse Now so Coopla decided to film him mostly in shadow. Again, it doesn't seem like he was too dedicated but a brilliant performance, nonetheless. So while dedication is most definitely great, it's not what always will put on the best performance. And that's not to knock Bale, he's a great actor.

He was good in Brokeback Mountain...

...did I just say that? :wow:

Heath didn't get that Best Supporting actor nom for nothing. He has talent, and is definitely going places. Starring as The Joker can only boost his career further.

I think Bale would break his face, and Ledger would go Brokeback on him. Get it? Brokeback? Witty, huh? And by Brokeback, I mean break his back.

Bahahahahahaha!

If tom cruise were in a room with Bale and Ledger, neither of them would be converted into scientologist because tom would wake up from the dream.

I think Heath is getting all this hype simply because he was such an odd choice to play this role, and he's doing it in a new, abstract way. But I don't think he will dominate the movie as Nicholson did because I don't believe he will be onscreen as much. When he is onscreen, of course he may chew the scenery a bit, but there's so much being packed into this film that I don't see him being all over the place like B89, where Nicholson was in a ton of scenes. They have the mob stuff to deal with, the love triangle with Bruce, Dent & Rachel, and the introduction of Two-Face all in addition to the Joker's antics. I see this film more as a mystery where the Joker is concerned, with Batman trying to figure this guy out, rather than B89 where Nicholson was clearly supposed to anchor the film and be the focal point...

i thought by brokeback you meant, get all gay on him, or something. but breaking back is more amusing

There will definitely be a lot going on in The Dark Knight, and Batman is certain to be the focal point. But with a character like the Joker, if Heath puts on a fantastic performance, he will steal the show. Hannibal Lecter was truly not the focus of Silence of the Lambs but the near mention of that title and Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter will surely be the first person you think of.

Despite how much will be packed into this film, The Joker could steal the spot-light as long as Heath is on the mark and the character is written nicely. But I do see this Joker as being a mystery.

Solid point, I can definitely see what you mean. Silence of the Lambs is a great example, but I think even though we've seen Bale in BB already, I think he'll still be pretty fresh. Batman only showed up halfway through BB, and in TDK everything about him is going to be different, from the suit to the new pod to the penthouse. Even the portrayal I think will be different, as he evolves into his detective role and starts constructing his computer. I hope it will be enough so that he doesn''t disappear in his own film, cause I really don't want that....

I would have said Bale before The Dark Knight but everyone says this performance will blow me away so I don't know...

Also they are both dedicated...

If Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for a month to figure out how to do a role, I think thats pretty creepy...

Ledger rammed his cowboy buddy pretty hardcore (never seen it but from what I here he did lol - obviously not for real, but still dedication in a role like that)

He also locked himself in a hotel by himself to learn the Joker. And he also got skinnier to play Joker.

You know - all this talk and hype about the Joker could be doing Ledger a disservice.

I mean, we know how nervous he was to deliver a good performance considering all the thimgs he committed himself to doing. This hype has our expections sky-high.

Everyone feels ledger will deliver them their joker and that may not be the case.

Im sure Ledger would wish the footage and movie itself speak for him after people see it rather than producers and other actors (looking at you Michael Caine)

it's going to blow people's minds when they see the Joker in the nurse outfit.

You clearly didn't see the prologue? Did you?

10 Things I Hate about you really showcased Ledger's versatility as an actor

I was just realizing how brilliant it was to have lesser known villains in the first film. That way the character of Batman/Bruce was developed without being overshadowed by a flashy villain as was something that happened in Burton's original movie. Now that we understand Batman/Bruce, they can introduce a show-stealing villain and we already know and care enough about Bruce to let his story be more about reacting to the antagonist. Nice work Nolan.
