I liked Heath Ledger in The Things I hate About You.
Bale is more dedicated to his roles than Ledger, look at "The Machinist".
He was good in Brokeback Mountain...

Pop Quiz #2:
You put Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in the same room with Tom Cruise. Who does Tom Cruise turn into a Scientologist first, Bale or Ledger?
I think Bale would break his face, and Ledger would go Brokeback on him. Get it? Brokeback? Witty, huh? And by Brokeback, I mean break his back.

I think Heath is getting all this hype simply because he was such an odd choice to play this role, and he's doing it in a new, abstract way. But I don't think he will dominate the movie as Nicholson did because I don't believe he will be the focal point. When he's on screen, of course he may chew the scenery a bit, but there's so much being packed into this film that I don't see him being all over the place like B89, where Nicholson was in a ton of scenes. They have the mob stuff to deal with, the love triangle with Bruce, Dent & Rachel, and the introduction of Two-Face all in addition to the Joker's antics. I see this film more as a mystery where the Joker is concerned, with Batman trying to figure this guy out, rather than B89 where Nicholson was clearly supposed to anchor the film...
There will definitely be a lot going on in The Dark Knight, and Batman is certain to be the focal point. But with a character like the Joker, if Heath puts on a fantastic performance, he will steal the show. Hannibal Lecter was truly not the focus of Silence of the Lambs but the near mention of that title and Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Lecter will surely be the first person you think of.
Despite how much will be packed into this film, The Joker could steal the spot-light as long as Heath is on the mark and the character is written nicely. But I do see this Joker as being a mystery.

You know - all this talk and hype about the Joker could be doing Ledger a disservice.
I mean, we know how nervous he was to deliver a good performance considering all the thimgs he committed himself to doing. This hype has our expections sky-high.
Everyone feels ledger will deliver them their joker and that may not be the case.
Im sure Ledger would wish the footage and movie itself speak for him after people see it rather than producers and other actors (looking at you Michael Caine)
You clearly didn't see the prologue? Did you?
