Has anyone had any problems with the blu-ray of this at all? I was watching this and half way through it just stopped, anyone else had similar problems or I do I have a faulty disc?

More like you have a faulty player. What brand is it?

Mine hasn't stopped before, but almost everytime during the wherehouse scene when Leo starts yelling at JGL the sound cuts off. I have to rewind it for a second or two then it works fine.

What kind of player do you have?

Insignia. Only movie it's done that for, otherwise it always works fine, and I know it's a cheaper brand. I do want to upgrade in the near future for faster load times when I pop in a movie.

Get a Sony. I bought an Insignia because they had a great deal on it, but immediately took it back after realizing that it could not properly display the time of the movie. I figured if it was having that kind of trouble right out of the box, something else would surely come up at some point. So I returned it and got a Sony instead. Haven't had any problems with it. The way I look at it is Sony dumped a ton of money into the format by selling the PS3 at $400 when standalone players were $500+. They were losing a ton of money because they had to compete with the pricing of the XBox 360. I have a PS3 as my living room Blu-ray player and have never had any problems with it. Their standalones are just as reliable IMHO.

Samsung is a brand that people should stay far away from for Blu-ray. Lots of bad reviews on various home theater forums. LG is questionable as well. Insignia is obviously a cheaper brand and questionable. I've heard Panasonic makes pretty good BD players. If I'm not mistaken, they were in on the format's patent with Sony. That means they have a higher stake than other companies in making sure the format succeeds. It's still a new format and eventually it will get to the point where even the cheap players are ultra reliable, like DVD. But it's just going to take time.

My first BD player was a Samsung and I HATED it. It would take about 1-2 minutes to load any movie. The Netflix stream on it was horrible, as well. Sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't.

I now use a PS3, and it loads fast, and I haven't had a single problem with it.:cwink:

Load times are an issue with older standalone players regardless of brand. Newer ones are supposedly competitive with the PS3. For a long time it was pretty foolish to buy anything other than the PS3 for Blu-ray. It had built-in Internet firmware updates long before any of the other players and it has a far stronger processor than any of them. For awhile standalones were $750-1000 while the PS3 was $500ish. Huge no-brainer.

I got my PS3 two and a half years ago and was fortunate to get in on a Memorial Day weekend sale at Wal-Mart. PS3 was $400 but they gave me a $100 Wal-Mart gift card for purchasing it, so it was a really sweet deal. At the time, most standalones were more expensive than the PS3. The Sony I have in my bedroom has slow loadtimes and no Internet connectivity, but I have not had any problems with disc freezeups and whatnot. Samsung has had a crapload of complaints about this aspect of their players.

I have a Sony BDPS550 with profile 2.0, I watched Scott Pilgrim on it last night with no problems and watched The Expendables on it right after Inception with no problems either, so I doubt its the player.

Funny, it was around the same time that mine stopped, I had to stop the movie and re-load it again and it worked then, although stopped again when I was rewinding only to carry on.

I own a Samsung and so far the only major glitch I've had with it is it temporarily freezes whenever the mini-documentaries in the extraction mode of Inception would normally come on when I watch the movie. This alone is almost enough for me to want to buy a new bluray player. I've also heard that WB movies will not play if you update the firmware so I've been terrified to update it since a decent portion of my bluray collection are Warner Bros. films. On the other hand I have a 46" Samsung television and it is by far the best television I have ever owned. Too bad their bluray players are crap.

TV's are probably the most important product for them. They don't have as much invested in Blu-ray as Sony or Panasonic. If you truly want to avoid Blu-ray playback problems, get a PS3. It can handle pretty much everything thrown at it. It is the only player released so far that is truly future-proof due to the processing power of it and the built-in wireless Internet.

AVEITWITHJAMON,
that does sound like a disc issue. Have you tried cleaning the disc? If that doesn't help, definitely return it and get a replacement copy.

.

Its the first time I have watched the disc so there shouldnt be any problem, checked it as well and no marks or scratches, must just be a faulty disc, will be getting a replacement ordered as soon as, not happy especially after it took 3 weeks to arrive from Amazon :cmad:.

Have you checked to see if the player has any firmware updates?

Does that cost money? Because I see that notice come up on my recent Blu Ray movies. Inception namely.

Plus, my Sony Blu Ray has had this constant problem since I got it. It freezes for like one second whem my movie plays. Or, worse, the sound suddenly disapears and I usually have to turn the player off to get it back.

If you're referring to firmware updates, then no, those are free. Just need an internet connection.

Longshot, Panasonic is supposedly a great brand for Blu-ray. I don't own one of their players, but I have heard a lot of good things about them.

Its a profile 2.0 so didnt think it would need one, but dont have it hooked up to the internet, plus, if it can play the likes of T2 and Scott Pilgrim, 2 supposedly very advanced and packed blu-rays, I dont see how Inception would be a problem.

Also, I thought if it needed an upgrade it wouldnt even load the movie, let alone play half of it.

BAD NEWS GUYS:

Pete Postlethwaite....has passed away. He was recently diagnosed with cancer. Even in his brief role in Inception, he always had a presence and gravity about him.. :(

He was the ultimate "hey it's that guy" actor. RIP.

RIP Pete Postlethwaite. :(
I remembered first seeing him in Dragonheart and Usual Suspects when I was a kid and always enjoyed seeing him in other movies.

Another damn thing that is irritating me with this Insignia player is that it won't recognize the damn USB I plugged into the back of it.

If you're going to save up for another player, get a PS3. Has really cool functionality with movies and pictures on USB and it also is the only Netflix streaming device with 5.1 surround sound at the moment. The HD streaming quality is pretty good on Netflix for PS3 too. Not Blu-ray quality, but pretty similar to what you might see on a HD movie channel.
