College Professor Fired for not respecting bible

The Bible is accurate and reliable. Sure, pull flying scorpions and FOCUS on that when that's not even supposed to be taken literally.

This disgusts me...this obvious support of anything contrary to the Bible. It's like we've forgotten all about the most publicized, reliable book ever and the book a lot of people have sacrificed their own lives for JUST BECAUSE we don't like the people who follow it or we don't believe in the supernatural.

This is bull****

Everyone who is attempting to deride a person's faith or show HATE of another person's religion, regardless of whether they believe it or not, should not be viewed as a voice of reason in conversation and that includes Wilhelm most definitely.

Yes, cristo is the true voice of reason! LMAO!

Seperation of church and state. Look it up sometime.

um....did you even READ my post? Obviously you didnt. Otherwise you would understand that that is what I was saying. No double standards; if you can't speak in favor of religion in a public setting (IE: this school in question) then you can't speak against it. Everyone is intitled to their opinions, but there is a time and place for it all. Read my post again, maybe itll sink in.

He was telling students to adhere to reality. Nothing wrong with that.

Right. HIS reality. YOUR reality. Not THEIRS. It is relative. There is no such thing as a universal reality. What YOU consider to be reality may be true for you, but not for others. No one is right. No one is wrong.

I'm surprised (well, not really) that the only response to my post was so pathetic. ...no offense, zanos.

well, he does have a point. theres a difference between two opposing views DISCUSSING a topic and one or both sides hurling insults and generally being *****ebags.

And this thread isnt about faith and lack of faith, this is about the professor being fired for voicing an opinion he (in my opinion) shouldnt have voiced at that particular time and place.

If you want to childishly argue the idea of religion itself, there is another thread for that.

This kind of thing makes me wonder: for those who demand logic, try this...

Let's say, for the sake of this scenario, that God does exist, and that He created the universe. Imagine the kind of raw power and energy that would take, to not only create all of existence, but maintain conscious control over it, for eternity...

Now, with that in mind, are you honestly saying that such a divine Being, responsible for all the complexities and attributes of the universe (planets, moons, nebulas, not to mention all the tiny details of Earth's biological environment), could have enough power to control the cosmos...and yet not be able to make sure His actions and commands are documented clearly and accurately?!
Yes.

Reality
re·al·i·ty (rē-ăl'ĭ-tē)
That which exists objectively and in fact: Your observations do not seem to be about reality

College classes, while primarily for teaching a specific subject, reguarly have discussion amongst the students and with the professor as well. This college in Iowa isn't even a bible college

I've never understood why theists seem to believe they need to stick up for their god. Will the all mighty creator of the universe catch feelings if we're not careful? Maybe that's what happened to New Orleans.

He was teaching History of Western Civ. The things that literally happen in the Bible don't match up with real history, you can't teach it without assuming the Bible is wrong.

Are you an archaeologist? I dont think so. Moreso, I dont think that you can back that up at all - it is just another "claim" that anyone and their mother uses to try an refute the bible, without taking the time to examine it themselves...hmph, kinda hypocritical, eh?

I have in my possession one of COUNTLESS books WRITTEN BY ACTUAL ARCHAEOLOGISTS that prove the idea that the bible is HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. The book I own is called "The Bible As History" by arcaeologist Werner Keller. Do yourself a favor and thoroughly INVESTIGATE your claims before you spout out prepackaged remarks.

Yes he was. And if you go by your previous comment of the bible being an inaccurate, unhistorical text, then there was no reason for him to be even mentioning the bible - he should have been sticking with the "accurate" and secular texts. :whatever:

thats like asking why someone would stand up for their mom after a bad "your momma" joke - the actual mother may have no idea the crack was made, or could care less, but you stick up for her anywy. Its out of devotion and love.

The Bible is about as historically accurate as the Illiad.

If my memory is correct Leto is studding to be an archaeologist. For every book written by theists looking for evidence there's a couple dozen written by objective people with sufficient evidence to discredit the Bible.

I'm a Christian, and I don't think he should've been fired. I remember a teacher (and one I deeply respect) saying The Bible was just stories, and not being too bothered by it. As a matter of fact, outside of Jesus, I don't take much of The Bible literally anyway (though I believe in Moses). I take the morals and lessons to heart but look at the stories behind them as mere metaphors.

To an extent, it is. It's also probably the biggest influence in Western literature as well.

The bible is society's rule book, really.

I certainly hope that’s not true, the Bible’s one of the most violent, sexist and generally barbaric books in the history of literature. If Christians didn’t believe it were the word of god I’m sure it would take a priority over Harry Potter on the “Books to Burn” list.

That's what it was created for, I believe.

The Bible is still relevant in today's society. Moreso than most religious text.

It's relevant because of the tremendous influence it's had in politics, culture, etc. since it was ..erm, published I guess you could say.:o

But aside from that it's as relevant of any of the other religious texts and mythological stories passed on from generation to generation.

Where exactly does the entire Old Testament, parts the New Testament that endorse chauvinism, slavery and suppression of free-though come in?

This is pretty damn ridiculous. If he was teaching 1st or 2nd graders, then maybe I could see their point, but this is frickin college. I had lots of college professors that had opinions that I completely disagreed with, but since I'm an free-thinking adult, I knew that I didn't have to agree with what they said. The offended students should have been adult enough to know that just because he thinks that doesn't mean that they have to.
