I agree that the first episode felt like it tried to do too much, but what it did still felt like Community to me. It still could have been funnier, the cut away into Abed's head was ok the first time, the idea was sound but the execution was poor. The Dean's part was just normal Dean behavior to me. And when I realized they were going to do the cut aways all episode, I wasn't pleased.
The second episode was much better but after the first few minutes, I felt something that I have never felt from watching a Community episode before. Once they started talking about Peirce being at home, I knew where the rest of the episode was going, it felt formulaic.
The third episode increased the feeling of a formula, it's like we're getting Community from Walmart now instead of the mom and pop shop.
Which isn't to say that is an inherently bad thing. Some people, who felt that the show used to get too out there at times, will be happy with the new direction, others not so.
