Community - Part 3

Sounds like some of the Fox animation writers are upset about Community possibly getting nominated in the animated Emmy category.

They should be mad at themselves. For not being capable of good writing anymore. :o

Video game episode. I mean it's not like they'll win and why is Family Guy upset they were nominated for best comedy one year. Although it is a rule that a show can nominated a special episode as a standalone episode and since Community has two, they're letting it slide.

To Whom It May Concern:

Television Academy

We the undersigned animation showrunners and writers desire to address what we have regarded as a pernicious and unfair ruling by the Academy for the past 20 years, which we believe now, more than ever, should be redressed.

We have been told that animated program writers could not also submit their work for writing Emmys, for reasons we never understood, but supposedly pertaining to the purity of the branches.

This is why no one was more startled than we when last year “Community” was able to submit for comedy series, writing, and animated program, in the face of everything we had been told for two decades. We were told that for some reason, a one-time waiver was granted.

Imagine our surprise when this year we see “Community” once again eligible for comedy series, writing, animated program, and short-form animated program. This letter is in no way intended to be a slight on the terrific show “Community” but a request from us to enjoy the very same rights they now do. Clearly the Academy’s ban on submitting in multiple categories is being enforced in an arbitrary and unfair manner. We therefore request that we also be able to submit our programs for both animation and comedy series as well as in the writing category.

Respectfully,
Richard Appel, Mike Barker, Kit Boss, James L. Brooks, Stewart Burns, Steve Callaghan, Brett Cawley, Joe Chandler, David X. Entire ‘Community’ Cast Returning for Season 4, Including Chevy Chase

Posted on Thursday, June 28th, 2012 by Angie Han

Community fans who are still reeling from the loss of showrunner/creator Dan Harmon will be happy to hear that at least some of the other key players on the series remain firmly locked in place. The entire core cast is officially set to return for the NBC comedy’s upcoming fourth season. Aside from noted discontent Chevy Chase, I don’t know that there was ever much doubt the stars would be back, but it’s good news all the same. More details after the jump.

Chase was the only cast member whose return was ever really in question. The actor has been vocal in his disappointment with the show in the past, telling press that he’s “always” had “creative issues” with the series and declaring, “I probably won’t be around that much longer, frankly.” And that’s just in public — in private voicemails to Harmon that were leaked to the public, Chase was heard disparaging Community as “a ****ing mediocre” sitcom.

But apparently he’s gotten past his problems with the show, because Deadline reports that Chase is definitely coming back — along with his co-stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong. Replacing Harmon at the top will be new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port, veterans of ABC’s Happy Endings and The CW’s Aliens in America.

With a scheduled return date of October 19, Community (and fellow Friday-nighter Whitney) will be among the last of NBC’s fall premieres.

Unfortunate as it is to wait so long for the series return, it’s probably for the best if it gives the cast and crew extra time to adjust to the big staff shakeup. In the meantime, you can see some of the cast convene for San Diego Comic-Con next month. While Chase, Glover, Jeong, and Rash will be sitting out the event due to other commitments, McHale, Brie, Pudi, Brown, and Jacobs are all expected to show up.

Of course Chevy is staying. He won the Harmon fight.

Still not convinced Chevy didn't have anything to do with Harmon getting the boot.

Which is a damn shame, because of the Greendale Six, he's the most expendable. Pierce could bite it any minute and I honestly don't think I'd care.

I just hope chase doesn't get more creative pull on the show as a result. his style of humor is completely wrong for this show.

I'm totally bummed out with the loss of Harmon but if there was anyone who I'd be ok with taking over, it's the Happy Endings folks. They did good work on that show and it had a similar silliness to it. Not judging until we're a few episodes into the new season.

Deadline:
‘Community’ Creator Dan Harmon Nets Script Deal At CBS
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Dan Harmon is a wanted man this development season. On the heels of a blind script deal at Fox for a multi-camera comedy, the Community creator has signed a second blind script deal at CBS, also for a multi-camera comedy project, which will be produced by CBS TV Studios.

Harmon has fielded interest from networks ever since his May firing from his NBC/Sony TV comedy series Community. The deals with CBS and Fox signal a change in direction for the writer-producer after creating/co-creating two consecutive single-camera comedies that have developed cult followings but have been branded as having narrow appeal: Comedy Central’s Sarah Silverman Program and NBC’s Community. Having achieved critical acclaim with his single-camera shows, Harmon is now looking to show he can go for wide audiences too with multi-camera comedies.

Harmon is currently at the Montreal Just For Laughs comedy festival scouting for talent. He is usually at his best when writing with talent in mind as he did with Silverman. Harmon also rewrote the characters on Community after the pilot was cast so they better fit the actors. In addition to his broadcast development, UTA-repped Harmon has animated pilot Rick & Morty in the hopper for Adult Swim.

Ugh.... so he's stopped trying, I see. :csad:

i dont think i have ever really noticed the difference between multicamera and single camera. I mean I know what the difference is but I dont think I've seen it really affect the program

Yep. Other than the laugh track. Which I literally don't even notice on the multi-camera shows I do watch.

don't really like laugh tracks. they're pointless and cheap. The fun of laughing in the background is that it's genuine reaction to the the story/humor. if it's fake, it comes off as forced, and (I'm looking at you disney channel) often times the shows that use them are never as funny or as bold as shows like everybody loves Raymond, etc. Either a real studio audience or none at all. That's my stance.

This. I honestly can't say I like any shows that contain a laugh track. It all feels very robotic and makes me feel as if they are telling me I am too dumb to know when to laugh.

I didn't lol a lot during Community but that doesn't mean I wasn't thoroughly entertained week in week out

 The best part about finally getting MASH on DVD was having the option to turn off the goddamn laugh track.

I wish I could turn ON the laugh track for some of my DVDs. Like Game of Thrones, Oz or Deadwood. That would be .

"Ser Ilyn--"
*audience hushes*
"--bring me his head!"
*laughter*

Speaking of laugh tracks...
