Constantine General Discussion Thread - Part 1

Has there been any news on this getting a 2nd season yet? Watched the pilot tonight and really enjoyed it.

Not yet. Daniel Cerone (executive producer) said via twitter that NBC will announce their fall schedule on May 11, they may hear 2-3 days earlier and when he finds out he'll let the fans know.

Ah right, not long to go to find out at least, hope it does get renewed even though I have only seen the pilot so far.

it gets better with each ep, especially with the clever ways they try to bypass the whole " no smoking " thing. it's like :

episode 1 : okay, you can show him putting out a cigarette, but not inhaling.
episode 2 : you can show him flicking a cigarette butt out into the yard/putting out a cigarette.

a couple eps later : alright, he can be shown with a cig in his mouth for a couple scenes.

then : okay, lighting a cig ? sure.

and by the last episode it's like : **** it, just let him smoke . as often as you want.

2 episodes in and I am loving the show already. Only one thing bugs e, if he grew up in Liverpool, why does he have a Newcastle accent?

As someone from Liverpool it's quite annoying.

Because the show is meant for a mostly American audience and most of us wouldn't know the difference any more than a Brit would be expected to know the difference between a Boston and New York accent.

So they are allowed to get the accent wrong for that reason? People in England watch this show as well.

He was born on vacation.

He said in episode 2 he grew up in Liverpool, he should have a Scouse accent if he did.

Matt Ryan is Welsh and said he was going for a general northern accent for Constantine rather than a specific Scouse one.

Matt Ryan said
“John is originally from Liverpool, I'm from Wales, and Liverpool and Wales are quite close together, so there are certain sounds that are similar,” Ryan explained. “I am doing an accent, but it's a Northern accent, a general Northern English accent, based on a Liverpudlian accent.

“You can't really do a hard Liverpudlian accent on American television, because nobody would understand what you're saying. So it's kind of a mixed match of mine, and Liverpool, and a general Northern English accent, so it can be understood.”

So he isn't doing a Liverpudlian accent because he doesn't think Americans would be able to understand him. Matt is probably right but I've always found it odd how I've never heard of Americans having trouble understanding all the different British accents on Game Of Thrones yet I've heard them say they struggle to understand British accents in other shows.

Interesting, that's fair enough I suppose, our accent is hard to understand but I would have liked him to sound more Scouse and being from .wales he should be able to do the accent decently. I don't see why he couldn't do a Scouse accent that wasn't strong. People never seemed to have a problem understanding the Beatles for example. But oh well, it's just a bug of mine being Scouse myself.

You are catching up now ?

I liked the series, hope you like it too, just watch all the episodes till the end, one or two episodes are not that good, but the show improves quite a bit after those.

Yeah haven't been able to watch it until now, enjoying it though.

It's one of the best comic book shows right now in my opinion. Hope they renew it!

I noticed that too, and I've never been "across the pond". Liverpool sounds like John Lennon, Wakko Warner from Animaniacs, or David Lister from Red Dwarf, right?

Yep that's about right, although they have a softer accent than many who live here, but Dave Lister from RD probably represents the average accent here.

Daniel Cerone is saying our best hope is as a possible midseason replacement.

Sadly doesn't sound to promising, up to episode 7 now which is the best one yet in my eyes.

Maybe Syfy, like it was rumored awhile back. I'm not holding my breath, though. This isn't my first rodeo. I'm not getting Happy Endings'd again.

Syfy was only being rumored because it's affiliated with NBC Universal. Now that NBC has officially passed on the show, it's pretty unlikely that it would go to any network not affiliated with Warner in some way.

It'd be CW, WGN, or TNT if a network were going to save it. I'd bet against any body saving it, but if I had to guess I'd say a streaming service like Hulu or Amazon would be the likeliest to save the show.

Well my hopes are officially gone, shame, I am only up to episode 9 but am loving the show so far. Was really hoping another season would happen.
